Are you kidding? 3 years ago is ancient history in computing terms!

If I spend $4,000 or so on a tower Mac I damn well expect it to be supported for around five years. Three is ridiculous. Maybe three is acceptable for a throw away device like a Mini but definitely not a PowerMac/MacPro.

YOU bought a PowerMac knowing full well it was going to be replaced with an Intel version - how is it Apples fault that you're impatient?

I might as well spew hatred about Apple because I own a MacBook at Apple doesn't bring OpenCL support to my MacBook with an X3100 GPU!

Honestly, you're really grasping at straws.

Same old arguments "get with the future hippy, PPC is for crustys" and crap like that

I have both Intel and PPC machines, and yet I'll be pissed off if SL is Intel-only. Why? Because it'll be a purely marketing decision*, a cynical exercise* to give a particularly loyal and existing customer base a kick up the backside that is neither deserved or warranted.

Thing is, there's no reason they can't make SL universal from a practical point of view. I could understand it if SL delivered the much-anticipated (why? I'm not sure) Marble interface or utilised Core Image in some new way, something that meant a PPC version was just not viable.

However, Snow Leopard is essentially just a streamlined version of Leopard, a leaner meaner greener OS (machine, sorry Mr Foreman please don't sue). Something you could argue that PPC users would benefit from more than Intel users in some respects.

That said, I expect it (Intel-only) because it reeks* of Apple 2009.

Telling one third of your user base to go F themselves is probably NOT a good idea in the worst economy in all of our lifetimes.

DUH.

Umm, I may be being stupid here but... how have Apple done this, exactly?

Yes, you can't run Snow Leopard, understand that. But... Leopard will still work you know. All the applications you currently use will still work. All your data will still be there, on the disk, the day after Snow Leopard comes out. Nothing you own will magically stop working once Snow Leopard is released onto the world.

ALL they've done is rewrite the code to give a solid platform for their hardware platform going forward. That's it. It really doesn't affect your existing setup. About the only thing I can think of is latest software releases might not work but when you're talking a machine over three years old then compatibility of the latest software is always a little bit questionable. And considering that along with this update Apple have also issued security fixes for Tiger I'd suggest you have at least another year of support coming to you, if not more which would take you to your five year self-imposed limit.

SpeedUp...

My cinebench openGl test went up 25%, and the single cpu render is +10%.
Can somebody please confirm?

Longer battery life reported

I updated last night to 10.5.8 with no problems. It took about 10 mins total.

I have a late 2006 white MacBook 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo model. I've since upgraded it to 250Gb HD and 2Gb RAM.

My battery life has been dropping markedly in the last few weeks. I was down to about 2hrs tops after calibration. This was 'reported life' and I actually timed it to be about that, with normal usage for me - surfing, Word etc via a wireless connection to my cable modem.

I was even considering a new battery, despite the expense...

This morning I notice the battery life is reported as anywhere from 3:06 to 3:59 depending on what I'm doing (and when the screen went black after a few mins of no use, it was saying 6:00 hrs left when I came back to it!)

I'm now running on battery, with my 3G wireless broadband dongle banging out at 7.2Mbps using OmniGraffle and surfing... and reported life is currently at 2:47, even after being powered up for approx 20 mins...

So it looks like the 10.5.8 update has done something with battery reporting - will it actually give me more time on battery?

I'm checking now - I'll be back with an update!

Cheers

Martin

DUH.

 Email them, quickly, and let them know about their error. You can save Apple! At the bottom, be sure to include all of your economics qualifications and relevant industry experience which led you to that eloquent conclusion of "DUH".

You might even get a job out of it. Or, maybe, they'll reply that "in the worst economy in all of our lifetimes" (apparently ignoring the great depression, the varying ages of the audience and the fact Apple just reported an amazing quarter) they don't fancy sinking more money into something that is moving into obsolescence. That's kind of like painting a slowly sinking ship. Really, what's the point? It would keep a certain percentage of all the people who bought stuff years ago happy? That’s not the way to make decisions - the majority of people outside of this forum don't even know what Software Update is!

Those PPC computers work at least as well and in most cases better (due to updates) than as advertised when people bought them. I have one, and I'm not crying about it. I'm certainly not framing my argument around economics in an attempt to give it validity - that's just spurious.

Why do you bold and center your posts? Are you that desperate for a reply? Have I fulfilled a need for you by replying?

the iDisk icon has changed. I thought they'd do this as the iDisk app on the iPhone is blue.

Kinda liked the pink though :( much better to have a nice range of diverse colours, rather than grey HD, blue folders, blue iDisk icon!

Just quoting you for emphasis to see if it helps cure the stupid present in this thread.

It's not like PPC users with Leopard will suddenly see their computers disintegrate once SL is released. They've had 3 years since all models were Intel where they could consider migrating.

Longer to consider switching actually since the transition was announced over 4 years ago.

SL is going to be an odd upgrade for Apple: Some Macs will support it, others will partially support it, and some won't support it at all. I have Macs in all three categories, and the fact that some of them won't run SL doesn't bother me the way it does some people here. When SL is released, none of my Macs will be any less useful than they are today. I also know that Apple has a good track record of supporting the previous OS version, so they'll continue to be useful until I retire them.

Agreed, kinda miss the old one. Made a nice change from all the other gray/blue icons...

Software moves on....So should you!!!

Erm.. its no different to any other software company striving to make their products better.

Older machines cannot run new software some of the time. Its a fact of life.. PPC's will still be able to run the software that was designed for them as well as surf the net etc etc etc.

Its not surprising that the day came that Apple released an OS that could not run on PPC. Get over it!

Well in the commercial world the cost of support for computer hardware over 3 years old goes up significantly - usually to the point its cheaper to buy new hardware.

There is a reason Apple care lasts only 3 years

After updating other Macs to 10.5.8 looks like wifi works, but unstable as hell and speed, well less than 1 MB/s.

Same problem here, it almost feels like I'm on dial-up! On top of that Safari has become extremely unstable and continually crashes.

Is there a way to revert back?

The 10.5.8 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac, as well as specific fixes for:

- compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
- an issue that could cause some monitor resolutions to no longer appear in Displays System Preferences.
- issues that may affect Bluetooth reliability.

For detailed information on this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606.
For information on the security content of this update, please visit: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

If this is actually fixed, I'm going to be ecstatic. My Macbook Pro always has issues connecting to known, oft-used WiFi networks - even my home and office. Super lame.

I won't update my Mac Pro yet, I'll wait for Adobe to run out any updates first.

Time Machine or Clean Install or Archive and Install depends on what you do with your Mac, how important information stored in it is. I used Time Machine. Took about 10 min. to restore, so no big deal. Hope this problem will be solved ASAP.
