Update working great here. I'm impressed by Safari's speed. I hope they fixed the BT disconnection issues as well, haven't seen my mighty mouse drop so far.

Okay, this is an interesting problem/issue.

I have a MacBook Pro v. 4.1. Just updated to 10.5.8

On Battery wireless speeds drop to below 1 MB/s
On AC everything is fine, wireless speeds are back where they should be.

How does that make any sense???

Anybody have the same problem? Or any insight on how to fix it.

Thanks!

PPC & Snow Leopard

I think we're in a world now where upgrading a computer purely to have faster technology is a lot less important that it used to be. Even a 7-year old computer is adequately powered for a lot users (web browsing, video, email, documents, spreadsheets, etc). To expect a casual user to buy a new computer every 2-3 years is not entirely reasonable. Obviously, hard-core gamers, programmers, audio/video producers, technical computing users, etc are a different market.

That said, not providing SL for PPC isn't exactly a big "f$$$ you". The rug isn't being pulled out from 10.5, and I would assume Apple will continue providing at least basic support for some time to come. And if they don't, a little pressure from customers always helps (look at what happened to the supposed end of windows XP).

I think the real issue will be how long are 3rd party developers going to continue to support 10.5. Pretty much everything I use is still available for 10.4, often back to 10.2, so I think PPC users can expect a couple more years of software compatibility...

the same here.. i have macbook pro 4.1 too, and the speed is ok when macbook is on AC, when on battery, it drops very fast, but the Network utility shows link speed full G (54Mb) but real transfer rate is below 1 Mb

is the any solution or its a bug

thanks

At least it works fine when on AC. On my iMac which is always on AC :D speed is always ~1 MB/s. I will try todo clean install on the external drive and this time update to 10.5.8 with combo.

I've got a 17" G4 PB, still running Tiger. I've had it since Feb '05 (4.5 years or so). I just ordered a 1GB stick of RAM for it, and will upgrade to Leopard in another week or two. It'll feel like new, and that'll give me another 2 - 2.5 years of use out of the thing.

I'll be pushing 7 years of practical use out of a laptop. Would I like for SL to run on it? Sure. But I've got nothing whatever to complain about.

Maybe THAT is what's insane....

No. What is insane would be that the two previous PowerBooks literally fried on me, I used all the mileage that was possible to squeeze out of them.

The first one, a G4@667MHz, was operating close to 24/7 crunching numbers and it only took me 1.5 years to break entirely, during which time I also had to replace broken hard drive. Another one, a G4@1.25GHz, luckily lasted a little longer, but even that thing was unusable after 3.5 years of heavy use.

This current version has already lasted 2 years (and one hard drive change) so I might have to prepare having to buy a fourth unit later this year or early 2010... Or perhaps this will last me 5.5 years :D

My computer now sleeps by itself, without closing the lid, after updating.

In energy saver my screen was set to sleep after 15 mins (which did work) and the computer to sleep after 20 mins, which it would never do by itself after the set time. 10.5.8 seems to have fixed this for me.

Also, Mozy now seems to have a preference pane in System Prefs which I don't remember :p

Yes!

has anyone else's usb drive attached to their airport extreme become extremely slow since this update ?
cheers

In fact, all my network drives are slow.
In fact, safari seems much slower to load web pages.

I was doing a bunch of stuff with network disks last night, so I'm trying to figure out if I did something. Repairing permissions now, throwing up a lot of stuff.

Let me know if you figure this out.

Slow WiFi FIXED

Was getting ~1 MB/s on local network drives.
Repaired permissions.
Rebooted.
Now getting ~10MB/s.

Rebooting alone was not working.

Insert global debt data here....
some of us use their laptops more than browsing the net. when you work and use your machine as money making, you just gotta have the fastest most powerful machine (unless of course you're a writer). thus updating every 1-2 year is not even close to overkill; some people change their cars each year.
