This morning I installed 10.5.8 on my Santa Rosa MBP (2.4 Ghz) after having made sure there were no weird issues with it (by reading this thread). However, after reboot the screen stays black. Not only the backlight is off, but also there is nothing on the screen (checked the screen in full sunlight).

I turned it off, took the battery out and unplugged the cord an turned it on to make sure it was really off, but that didn't help. Resetting PVRAM didn't help either.

I tried to boot the Leopard DVD (c key pressed) and it looks and sounds like the DVD boots properly, though still nothing on the screen.

Last week I installed rEFIt in order to boot Linux from an USB stick, not sure if that has something to do with the issue. One would still expect the screen to light up and the apple logo to show...

If the issue is related to rEFIt it might be that the Mac does not boot from HD, however you would expect it to be able to boot from DVD and that it would show the Boot screen (Grey screen with mac logo) properly. I do hear the bootup sound though...

So, now I am at the Apple store where they had a quick look and hooked my MBP up to an external monitor, no luck either. They only tried to boot it from harddisk, so I am going to find a friend with an external monitor to try to boot from DVD and see if that will show on the external monitor.

Anybody experiencing similar issues?

I have the same model as you and yes, known issue with these. Your graphics chip crapped the bed.. You need to have apple warranty it for you. They'll replace the logic board..

Good luck

That's insane! I've bought 3 Apple pro laptops during the last 7 years...

I'm not saying it isn't showing it's age a little. For example, I have a single vertical row of pixels that are stuck on blue (which you don't really notice, except when you are in word, or some other all-white page). But it still runs like a champ, is more than fast enough for the wife and kids, I still use it for light photo editing (gimp, etc); and I program on it all the time. Some of the kids web-based flash games run a little slow on it, but that's they're only complaint. It still gets used every day.

Maybe I've just been lucky - but for the most part I see no reason not to get the most out of my hardware. Macs have almost always let me do that. My previous machine before my PB was a 6100/60 AV. No kidding.

On the other hand, I've run through more than one Dell machine in < 2 yrs. TCO on a Dell has always been much high than on any Mac I've ever owned.

I searched, but wasn't able to find anything ...

Is anyone else having problems with Finder windows opening much slower after the update?

Not for the large percentage of PPC Mac Users that can go no farther than OS 10.5, the most stability that can be had will keep our PPC Macs useful for afew more years. There will be a group of OS 10.5 people that will choose to stay at that level, just as there are may Mac Users that have not updated their PPC & Intel Macs past OS 10.4.11.

You kids these days and your fancy OS X. I'm still running OS 8.1 on my IIci!

some of us use their laptops more than browsing the net. when you work and use your machine as money making, you just gotta have the fastest most powerful machine (unless of course you're a writer). thus updating every 1-2 year is not even close to overkill; some people change their cars each year.

For the last couple of years, my Mac programming has only been for my own personal purposes, nothing professional. It's used a little less than what it used to be, but I do a lot more on it than web surfing.

My professional laptop gets turned over every 3 years (company policy). I'm thankful for that because it is just a piece of junk, that it is nearly unusable anyway by the time 3 years is up.

That said, I know more people that _think_ they need a replacement a lot more often than they actually do. Not that I mind at all. Keep the economy going people!

If I spend $4,000 or so on a tower Mac I damn well expect it to be supported for around five years. Three is ridiculous. Maybe three is acceptable for a throw away device like a Mini but definitely not a PowerMac/MacPro.

Disposable Mac minis?. Good call - that is probably one of many reasons you're not CEO @ Apple. Equivalent mentality to those annoying, arrogant drivers who ponce around in gigantic, ugly RV's, barging all other, "lesser", road users out of their way, because they feel it is their "right" to do so, because they are bigger.

You have NO greater right to support, just because you have more expensive equipment. Come down from your high horse, before you fall off... or are pushed. I understand your frustration, but you NEED to calm down.

10.5.8 broke my safari

I've had major problems with Safari 4 on my macbook pro. I first downloaded the beta and it just wouldn't work. I'd open the browser and the home page would load up fine, after that is when the problems would come. If I opened any other tabs and loaded a page, any page the browser would freeze. I couldn't close a tab and the tab I was on was completely unresponsive, if I tried to scroll, the bar would move but nothing would happen. tabs would freeze half loaded and in general it was pretty annoying.

I thought this was just a beta problem, but safari 4 ran fine on my mac pro.

I was still on 3 and pretty happy. But 10.5.8 has now upgraded my safari to 4 and it has the exact same problems. I've found an old dmg for 3, and I'm going to reinstall it after I take this MBP to the apple store (I also have a problem with writing DVD's so I figure I can have safari looked at then too)

Don't disagree. I would say however that most users don't fit the "i need the fastest to make money efficiently" mold. Most just have hardware lust.

Nothing inherently wrong with that, and as an AAPL shareholder I appreciate your support. However consumer spending in general is out of control when compared with overall income, so the frugal in me just wanted to throw out that it IS possible to keep a computer and use it for years and years, especially for the vast majority not rendering high def video in Final cut....

Hey can anyone backup through time machine fine? Cause i can't.... It hangs there....

I backup on a time capsule....

Telling one third of your user base to go F themselves is probably NOT a good idea in the worst economy in all of our lifetimes.

DUH.

One third of your userbase?? LOL. Where the hell did you get that statistic from? Does every thread have to turn into a bitch fest about PPC and Snow Leopard? Get over it and get on with your lives.

Anyway, I dont think Im gonna bother with 10.5.8 for a while, since 10.5.7 has been running flawlessly for me with no issues.

If this is actually fixed, I'm going to be ecstatic. My Macbook Pro always has issues connecting to known, oft-used WiFi networks - even my home and office. Super lame.

I won't update my Mac Pro yet, I'll wait for Adobe to run out any updates first.

no crap, it was horrible how one update a year ago or so ruined MBP wifi ... hoping this update will solve it.

That's insane! I've bought 3 Apple pro laptops during the last 7 years...

This is the prime example of why this forum is sometimes a bad influence on new comers wanting to buy their first computer or first Mac. That guy you quoted that said his 17" Powerbook is still in full service for 7 years, guess what, that's real world. When I buy a new Mac, I get my monies worth out of it, I always keep my Macs at least 5 years, if not longer till they are no longer usable for my needs.
You buying 3 Apple pro notebooks within the last 7 years IS insane and way overkill. Did you really NEED to upgrade that often? Probably not.

Same goes for these PPC people, you don't really NEED Snow Leopard, you just want it because you can't have it. Apple will fully support Leopard for the coming years. Heck, this latest update also included security updates for Tiger so, PPC users, stop trippin'.

I backup on a time capsule....

It has to do a Deep Traversal of the entire disk.....that makes Time Machine take a long while to backup. On top of that....Time Capsule is slow as molasses anyway.

It took over 2 hours for TM to do the first backup after installing 10.5.8. Nothing new though.

Just let it run.

Repair Disk Permissions - Disk Utility - 10.5.8

I have some errors under disk utility which I cannot seem to repair (please see the last part of this post). Could someone please explain to me why this is so? Thank you.

... I'm seeing an improvement in (reported) battery life. My battery indicator is (presently) 90% and reports 3:46 left. Never, ever had this on my Macbook before (2006 White 1.83 GHz Core Duo)

I just checked and my 13" MBP showed 7:01 of battery life, but i've seen the indicator exceed 7 hours before. Doesn't last that long in actual usage, of course.

Why should anyone care about powerpc users; they've had three years to shift - they've failed to do so.

Well when a PPC Mac is still a viable system and only 3 years old I'd be mad too...I mean I have a 7 year old PC that will run Windows 7 when it comes out, why shouldn't PPC Mac users with relatively new hardware not be mad that OS support will soon be a thing of the past for them?

macbook keeps disconnecting

hey guys how can i fix this problem, I updated to the new 10.5.8 last night and ever since that my macbook keeps disconnecting and sometimes reconnecting to the network ( sometimes i have to connect it again)

I'm with you, I'm hoping to get 5 maybe even 6 years out of my Penryn MBP. My G4 Mini, even though it's used as an iTunes Server, is still very usable for internet, email, iTunes, etc and that is with 512MB RAM. It's going to be 5 years old next May. The only thing I see limiting the usage of my MBP is the RAM. We'll see where we are in 4 more years.
