Powerbook was just a cooler name .

My MBP's system name is actually Powerbook, though I did have a G4 at one point :D

I agree, I still refer to my Macbook Pro as a Powerbook, but we must move on or we'll be called dinosaurs here.:D

Call of Duty 4 + 10.6.3 = CRAP!!

So I installed the update, then booted up Call of Duty 4 on my Mac Pro (w/ Radeon 4870). On 10.6.2 I was running with everything maxed out and it ran very smooth! Now with 10.6.3 with my previous settings it runs SOOOO slow! I have to drop down the resolution by half, remove anti-aliasing, and all the other features just to be able to play it.

What gives?!??!!?!?!?

Sorry, but I don't get it when people say " I'm not updating" or it's "not broken". Because eventually, you will be upgrading your OS in the future anyway! If you are not downloading it now, you will later, so just download the damn thing.

I don't understand largely either. Especially when dealing with 10.5 vs. 10.6 Leopard was the most unstable Mac OS I had ever used in my ten years of a Mac user. I still hate using it, even today. I try to keep all the PowerPC Macs on Tiger and all the Intel Macs on Snow Leo. Leopard was prematurely released and was too feature-heavy. Snow Leopard is what Leopard should have been all along.

However, if you have a lot of professional applications, I totally understand holding off on upgrading. If your profession depends on it, it always is wise to wait a little bit. But for the average user, you should be on Snow Leopard. It's far better than Leopard, for the exception of QuickTime, which I still use QuickTime Player 7 90% of the time.

Yeah your right..i just searched what you suggested...Do you have any ideas on how I can fix it with out doing a clean install? I have a 2.4 Ghz Black Macbook with a 250gb hitachi hd and i was running SL on it..I believe the 10.6.2 with no problem..sadly..I don't have any back up of my data..

So, kernel panic is not always synonymous with data loss, it just sounds like the OS isn't booting in your case. Have you tried starting in single-user mode or getting disk utility running from your install discs to error-check the drive?

Could it be OGL3 causing the issue?

Pretty massive OpenGL performance improvements:

Expose/Spaces is still choppy like 10.6.2! :( (2,16Ghz/GMA950/4GB RAM/7200rpm HDD)

Expose hack?

You can have fluid Spaces and Expose in Snow Leopard back by installing this hack: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/869611/

But alas, pitiful they haven’t sorted it out in X.6.3 release. let’s hope it won’t take them as long as 10.7 to fix it. But then again with the hack installed Expose is much snappier so no complaining from me here! :D

Updated and now Pro-Tools 8 doesn't work. Cheers Apple :/

No, that's Digidesign's issue. I hate Pro Tools for this very reason. Everything must revolve around Pro Tools software updates.

You should never expect any new Mac OS update to keep PT working at it's current version. Then to have to wade through Digidesign's cumbersome and very inefficient bible list of updates is the best part.

10.6.3 install crashed and iMac won't start!

I just got an iMac 27" i7 last week, which by the way, I love. But it's a pretty fresh install with nothing unusual on my drive and just some very basic and common applications as well as my music, movies, etc. So I went to download 10.6.3 and install seemed to go fine but it just hanged at the very end on "moving items into place" or somesuch. It stayed there for like 20 minutes with the blue bar moving maybe one or two pixel rows. Then the screen went black. I did a hard restart but the iMac wouldn't boot and just hanged on the loading screen several times. I'm doing a time machine restore now but am scared to reinstall 10.6.3. Anyone else having the same issue?

I think you mean congrats Digidesign.

They NEVER support the latest OS versions. Go look at digi's compatibility documents, they say 10.6.1-10.6.2 supported. If you're using PT, you should NEVER update your OS until after you've checked with digi to make sure they support the new version.

The 09 Mac Pro's have still the problem with the High Pitched Squeal sound ....

That's odd, never had that issue here.

Solely based on the fact that you have a known-good backup, you may as well try again just for kicks and see what happens. Though, depending on how much data you have, I can understand that this is time consuming.

Uh oh. I'm not touching this update until this is resolved, especially with Steam for Mac dropping in April.

Crud and double-crud.

This. Key word: NEVER.

Font issue drives me nuts!!

I had this before, then upgraded to snow leopard and it went away...after today's update, its back!! The numbers in my inbox message count are not centered and the calendar is messed up as well.

Anyone know what causes it?

thanks, yeah, it's about 300GB, so it's going to be a few hours. just seems odd to have this happen to what's a pretty mainstream configuration.

Wow, a lot of people seem to be having issues with this update, everything for me works so far, I haven't experienced any performance improvement though..

My Mac Pro seems snappier and now runs at 37 degrees vs 41 degrees. I say its great!!

For many of us 10.5 was very broken!

Still not upgrading - 10.5.8 works fine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Depending upon your hardware that could be a good thing or a bad things. SL is much better at leveraging the hardware in your machine. I'm not saying it is perfect but without a doubt it is better than 10.5 for many of us. Far better in fact.
