You implicitly said that by not pointing this out when I first said "if you had to chose between something that benefits" etc.

I simply think that Apple doesn't exactly prioritize OpenGL (as you said, 3.0 could have been there from 10.6.0 but it wasn't), so if they really must take their time before they roll out OpenGL updates I'd rather have 3.3 first.
Of course I'd be more than pleased to see both 4.0 and 3.3 implemented in the same update, I just don't see it happening.

Ok, so you basically just repeated exactly what I've been saying. Great talking to you.

Finally!

At last I can again connect to my Airport Extreme base station. It only took Apple half a year to fix wifi.

Crap, <string>arch=x86_64</string> in com.apple.Boot.plist no longer works for enabling 64bit for my MBP.

Anybody have any clue on this?

MikhailT and others who had no other success, try this in Terminal:
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="arch=x86_64"

DISCLAIMER: this is potentially dangerous... :apple:

I got my MBP 4G started in 64-bit kernel mode but my speakers are not working, I get a greyed out speaker icon. Anyone else experiencing this?

It was never my intention to state otherwise, I simply began this debacle by assuming that Apple is only going to roll out one update at the time and you never bothered to state that you believe otherwise until now.

Also your MS and Dell are dead posts are a little premature yet.
They're dead spiritually. :D
Most businesses are quite happy to stay with Dell/HP and Windows for a while yet. That's their decision, but it's one that will keep each of those companies going for the next decade.

Happy? I don't think that anyone is truly happy with Windows (well, besides Sadomasochists). More like stuck to it for (what they think) is more economical, or simply Windows-only software.

They may be 'happy' to upgrade to Windows 7 seeing that they were stuck to either an archaic OS or an undeclared beta of Win7.

I am very disappointed to report that Spaces and the Dashboard are still jerky on a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo Blackbook running with an external monitor in extended desktop mode.

Apple seems unable or unwilling to develop a decent video driver for the X3100 controller. Shame…

Out of curiosity, how much RAM are you using? I also have a BlackBook 2.4GHz and often run it with a 24" monitor and am wondering whether it is worth upgrading to SL.

There are plenty of glitches with 64 bit Windows.

Care to enumerate the "plenty" of glitches?

Other than the obvious, by design, issue that you need x64 drivers for hardware, there aren't that many that really affect the typical user.

Most PCs for sale today have the x64 OS installed - and most people never notice any issues.

I agree, I haven't had a single issue with Windows 7 yet.
Then again, it's the only version of Windows I've only used on Macs, maybe that's why

If there weren't glitches, then there would never be updates. As I said, NO operating system is perfect, be it Windows, Linux (whatever flavour distro) or Mac OS X. But I seem to recall a number of security issues. Again there were an equal number on the Mac side (and Apple are not usually as quick to patch them).

How to enable 64bit Kernel

Did that and i haven't the 64bit kernel activated....already did the update and so far so good.

What happened to not have activated?

I did not have the 64bit Kernel either so I rebooted and held down the 6 and 4 keys until the apple logo showed up. Now I am showing 64 bit no problem.

Safari is much much snappier, spaces and expose are much better and the loading of pref panes in system preferences is much much faster.

All in all very good.

Actually, I found my disabled speaker doesn't work on 32-bit kernel mode either. Anyone experiencing this on their MBP after the update?

The OpenGL drivers weren't updated in my 10.6.3 combo update. Seems odd. Wonder if it's video card dependent?

Why should I state something that was obviously implied? Why would I want Apple to skip over 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3?

Thanks! That's the only one that works. Everybody else, try this one.

No problem.

Depends on how old/new your GPU is. My X1600 saw no improvement in OpenGL Extensions Viewer but my 4850 is pretty much fully supported in 3.0 with the exception of one extension.

Finally!

My card readers and cameras are recognized again.... that was a major annoyance to have to use windows just to get the pictures off my camera!
