To all those who have had system issues because they installed things blindly: don't do that.

See update catalog info here.

The "combo" update linked was a PORTION of the combo update. The link was not fraudulent, but merely incomplete. Snow Leopard downloads only the parts of the update that are relevant for your system. To truly install the combo update from that server you'd need to get the other packages and install them as well. This is a design change to save download time for people who did not install optional components of OS X.

The portions are:
MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.5.pkg - 695 MB
X11ForCombo10.6.5.pkg - 23 MB
SUBaseSystem10.6.5.pkg - 261 MB
RosettaForCombo10.6.5.pkg - 1.9 MB
QuickTimePlayer7ForCombo10.6.5.pkg - 1.4 MB

…which together total up to a more realistic size for a complete combo updater.

I would wager that the SUBaseSystem10.6.5 package is important; the others are updates to optional parts of OS X.

This has been your dose of reality, explaining away conspiracies. Good night.

Bloated update!

Installed 10.6.5 and a few moments later was greeted with this. Thanks Apple, generous as always.

But that isn't the final release build (10H574). At least in my experience AirPrint via a Mac does not work w/ 10H574 build even w/ iOS 4.2 GM and iTunes 10.1b10.

Best I can tell, it's not working for me. I haven't done anything crazy like tried to reinstall drivers though.

I know I have the build before final and Software Update says I am current, so I am staying put, since all is working.

Hey guys, for those of us that DID use the bad combo updater, will running the 10.6.4 combo updater and then going to 10.6.5 fix everything? I'd hope so since the updater appears to have just been machine-specific, and not malicious. I have Time Machine if I need it, but I'd rather not have to go through that.

That process worked for me on my 2009-era 13" MBP.

1. Combo Update 10.6.4
2. Restart
3. Software Update: 10.6.5
4. Restart
5. "About the Mac..." now lists 10.6.5 with the right build number.

Things seem to be okay. That other combo update bonked certain programs too (like Final Draft and Bean) and they are now fixed! :) So fingers crossed.

I might install the 10.6.5 Combo Update when its released just to smooth everything over?

Bloated update!

How so? It's smaller than some of the other ones. Some of the combo updates (like 10.6.3 and 10.6.4) have been bigger.

Try to turn you're printer ON. I have two printers and one needs to be turned on manual. The other one not.

My printer is always on. I even tried printing something from my computer first to "wake" up the printer so it's not idling and that didn't help either.

I noticed that my geekbench score has increased from 2776 to 3897. Anyone else see such an increase?

One question that has yet to be asked is

Has there ever been a system update come out on a Wednesday before?

The oddity is that software update has shown up 10.6.5 is various sizes for a lot of people.

But apples download pages show nothing of the update at all thus far. which to me is rather odd as it has been out now via software update for several hours and should be showing up on the download pages.

Also all previous system updates come contained in a dmg file apart from those downloaded via software update.

I am just going to wait and see what appears after screwing up my external test drive.

Hello,

I've tried to install 10.6.5, but after the successful installation the system still show 10.6.4 installed :/

I've tried both combo update and via software update.

:(

I have the same problem. What should I do?

Errr... When did Mac OS 7.1 come out?

Seriously, Apple will change their routine when it suits them. No need to be a sceptic on this.

10.6.5 update will brick your machine if you are using PGP Whole Disk Encryption

I love/HAAAAATE PGP

No OS compatibility testing, no support info / warnings regarding issues.... and yet we pay per year for licensing and support... and get nothing / no warinings

Oh how I wish there were other commercially available options for whole disk encryption.......

UPDATE

There is a fix if your bricked that I verified -

Follow step 1 of PGPs TechNote

https://supportimg.pgp.com/guides/Tech_Note_PGP_WDE_Recovering_Data_Mac_OS_X.pdf

I can confirm this works. Bricked my Laptop, this fix works.

Be sure to decrypt your hard drive PRIOR to doing the update, it is a pain in the ass on a large drive, but it helps.

lockup

I have a recent fresh install of snow leopard on my top spec iMac, and install went fine, but after the reboot - about 10 min.. It just locked up. Itunes was running and I could move the cursor but nothing else worked. Did a power button reboot and it seems fine, but kinda odd. Ran disk utilities and it had to repair a bunch of permissions. Also installed it on my 2006 imac and it seems to be fine...

I'm getting a lot of updates this week. :D Mac OS now, iTunes soon, iPhone 4 hopefully on Friday, and then I should be getting the iLife disc this Saturday. Hooray software updates!

Worked on the MBP and the two Mac Pros, both relatively recent machine with updated video cards.

Did NOT break the Sonnett E4P driver, which is always the big worry, and all seems to work so far.

The only odd thing was that on the bigger hog of the Pros, the 09 dual core 2.93 xeon with the Radeon HD4870, there was NO status bar for the entire update. I was starting to wonder what the hell was going on.

The spinning gear on blue screen for a long time on shutdown, then a LONG bluescreen while I sat there and wondered, my heart sinking slightly, then a return to the gear, but a little fuzzier, at which point I was already planning my dinner around a restore. Then, lo and behold, it restarted, the update was there, and all was well.

On the other two machines, I got the standard status bar updates the whole time.

Oh well.

Combo update pkg fix

I don't trust the pkg. I'm going restore from my time capsule and live on my iPad tonight. However, updating with official 10.6.4 combo method should technically be okay since it replaces the system folder. Only concern is what if the pkg did something malicious... Just sucks that Im just going to end wasting more bandwidth when all I was trying to do was save it!

I did the update and restarted no problems, and I clicked on software update again and it had a new HP printer driver. I have a Photosmart C6280.

Just wondered if anyone else got a printer driver download after downloading the OS update, and if its a new driver, or reinstalling the pre-existing one again over the OS update?

Didnt check the printer update details before I clicked OK...

address an issue where dragging an item from a stack causes the Dock to not automatically hide

This was the only issue I actually encountered, but I encountered it often. Am happy to find that 10.6.5 actually does allow the Doc to automatically hide. Works like a charm now. :)

My printer is always on. I even tried printing something from my computer first to "wake" up the printer so it's not idling and that didn't help either.
Then try to turn your printer off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
On you're iPad (or other iOS 4.2 device) open the multitasking dock and close all 'open' apps. Then restart your iOS 4.2 device. Open Safari for instance and press print (same menu as for Mailing a link). Now if you don't see your printer's name in the print menu then let your iOS 4.2 device search for it by touching the Printer virtual button... Etc.

If you still can't print then this means that your printer is currently not supported (yet)...
