fix fake 10.5.6 combo install

For all of you who installed the fake 10.5.6 combo and who were unable to download the real **** via the software updater here is a quick way to download the regular intel update (not the combo) but it will be sufficient to finally update your system to 10.5.6

Go to the Terminal and type "softwareupdate -d MacOSXUpd10.6.5-10.6.5" (without the quotation marks)
Once downloaded the terminal will tell you to go to "Library\Updates" were you can find the correct update file.

Good luck

10.6.5 update will brick your machine if you are using PGP Whole Disk Encryption

Well duh. We PGP WDE users are a veeeerrrryyyy special group when it comes to this sort of thing. I'm hanging around the pgp forums to see if someone can post some experiences.

But thanks for the heads up.

Performed a System update, which also included iPhoto and HP Software updates. Install went fine then on reboot I was stuck at the Apple logo with the circle indicator going round and round for a good 20-30 mins with no apparent progress (no kernel panics or anything). Turned off the machine and reboot. Same thing, stuck at the Apple logo with the indicator going round and round.

Am I toast? Didn't do a backup prior which I should have.

Wait a sec, wait a sec. Does that mean we can have a USB/Firewire hard drive that is read and writable by Windows and OS X without having to resort to 3rd party apps?

You were always able to read/write to NTFS natively in Snow Leopard by adding a line in /etc/fstab via Terminal, but its unstable with external drives as it doesn't always mount. With support for exFat, no need to format external drives as NTFS to share between Windows and Mac.

Successor to FAT32 filesystem. No longer has the 4GB file size limit.

Try holding down shift during startup. After it is done start up normally and you should be good to go.

I know you meant 10.6.5, but what is this talk of a "fake" combo updater?

Nice. Did it repeat or no?

No but the system started bugging out on me big time. Sounds would crackle and fade out, and graphics were distorting.

So i had to do a complete maintenance workup: clear caches, rebuild launch services, permissions, PRAM reset etc.

Seems to be back to normal now but what a pain in the ass update.

the same size for my late 2009 imac 21,5".

man download speed goes down the drain right now. i wonder how many people are downloading this right now…

and btw this makes me wonder: do you guys think we're already downloading this from the NC center?

This is being downloaded through a CDN, someplace near your house.

I didn't know there was a 4GB file limit on FAT32. That would explain why I ran into issues with files over 4GB then.

Curious if I install the 4.2 GM if I will be able to upgrade to the official version once it's released? Anyone have experience with that?

broke my caps lock key

macbook pro i5 (2010).

caps lock no longer lights up or works, suggestions?

Big FAIL to this one.

Just tried that. Went all the way thru then it started booting normally. Trying again.

Edit: It booted about 3/4 of the way with the progress bar then it appears it was booting as normal but doesn't go anywhere. Rebooting with holding the shift key. This isn't looking promising.

To all those who have had system issues because they installed things blindly: don't do that.

See update catalog info here.

The "combo" update linked was a PORTION of the combo update. The link was not fraudulent, but merely incomplete. Snow Leopard downloads only the parts of the update that are relevant for your system. To truly install the combo update from that server you'd need to get the other packages and install them as well. This is a design change to save download time for people who did not install optional components of OS X.

The portions are:
MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.5.pkg - 695 MB
X11ForCombo10.6.5.pkg - 23 MB
SUBaseSystem10.6.5.pkg - 261 MB
RosettaForCombo10.6.5.pkg - 1.9 MB
QuickTimePlayer7ForCombo10.6.5.pkg - 1.4 MB

…which together total up to a more realistic size for a complete combo updater.

I would wager that the SUBaseSystem10.6.5 package is important; the others are updates to optional parts of OS X.

This has been your dose of reality, explaining away conspiracies. Good night.

Exactly. I was surprised that people decided to download and install an update from a random link.
