Why till 2023 tho?
I usually replace laptops on a 3 year cycle, I bought a 13" MBP in 2020.

Further, I don't see the M1 as anything to really bother with. Apple has no track record on the desktop. If they can "do it again", it might be worth the paradigm shift.

I'm not tied to the idea of Apple, I'm tied to the idea of a portable Unix computer that isn't Linux.

Someone might've already mentioned it earlier on in the thread, but has anyone else had a 'Relocated Items' folder appear on their desktop after each of the last three or so Big Sur updates?

The first time I wasn't so bothered but now seemingly every time I update it's there.

Really, my "update" is 12.3G..
But how much of a delta are you going through? Updates between immediately adjacent versions have always been small(er) than using a combo update when you have to cross multiple versions. Not that I would *ever* use an Apple delta update.

<shrug> I'll download the full installer with installinstallmacosx and archive it with the rest.

These updates are brutal for my completely Apple based rural company, which has a whole lot of macOS devices. The best internet we can get is about 12Mbps down. Apple doesn’t offer standalone updaters anymore, which makes it even worse.

Yeah, I have one on my M1 Mac Mini desktop... how relevant is it? Does it contain anything that needs to be saved? Or can it be safely deleted to free up desktop real estate or SSD space? :D

Anyone else having issues installing this update? My 2018 mini has been hit or miss when it has come to installing updates since Big Sur. Normally when it fails thru System Preferences I could get the update to run by using softwareupdate -i -a in the Terminal, but now I am getting:

I had this trouble with 11.3.1 as well, but the full installer InstallAssistant.pkg worked. Unfortunately nothing is working this time.
I’m not an expert in this stuff, but from what I can make of that error message, your computer downloaded an update package that – somehow – got corrupted. The SHA-1 code that it mentions is a tamper-proof checksum of the package to guarantee its integrity - to stop fake updates in their tracks. What’s troubling is that you have seen this before.

My guess is that it’s really unlikely that the package would get corrupted during transmission, that’s why TCP/IP is there, to take care of that side of things. I’d perhaps suspect an intermittent hardware issue.

Do you have enough apps opened simultaneous to eat up all your 8GB Unified that your doing continuous shuffling of memory?

Quite often, yes.

I would have opted for 16 GB at least, because of how much memory the MacOS uses. Most of us x86 Mac users have 16 or 32 GB RAM installed or more.

16GB would certainly be better. Unfortunately 16GB is only available when custom ordered from Apple. Other retailers/channels are not able to sell the 16GB versions, so it wasn’t an option for me.

However, 8GB on the M1 machines certainly feels much faster than it does on Intel. I definitely wouldn’t buy an 8GB x86 again, but on M1 it feels perfectly fine even with a lot of memory-intensive apps running.

Thank you for the suggestion. This is actually what I’ve been attempting for the past 6 months or so. Unfortunately, most of the time it doesn’t work correctly for me, and I’m not exactly sure why because there isn’t really any feedback or settings for it. The machines download the update from internet even if it exists on another machine.

No idea why really… the network is relatively simple.

How do you use the .pkg file to create a USB installer stick?
You don't.

You just double click the pkg file and "install" it. All that does is put the Install macOS Big Sur app into your Applications folder. That is what you use to make the bootable USB as follows:

In Disk Utility, format a 16GB or 32GB usb as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and call it Untitled.

Now run this in Terminal:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Big\ Sur.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled

I can't find any "CableConn" in Amazon, could you gives us a link please?
It was my bad. The name is "CableDeconn" not "CableConn". Here's the link. They have two versions of this cable:

  • With a USB-C PD female jack on its side, which allows you to plug in your MacBook's power brick into the side of this cable, so you can use one port on the MacBook for both sending DP signal to the monitor and for receiving power / charging battery from your MacBook's power brick. It's completely safe to do so.
  • Without a USB-C PD female jack, so it's like a regular USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable.
Both types of cable have different lengths available, and either kind is selectable with various lengths from this link.

Anyone else still have Battery Service message on an M1 machine? I have an M1 Air and my battery "needs servicing." Has said this for quite a few versions now.. Do I have to get my laptop replaced to get this fixed? Anyone have experience on how to fix this?

Seem to recall someone else having this issue and a reinstall of Big Sur resolved it. Doesn't hurt to try.

I had it happen with the last update but, not this one. I just deleted the folder.

Right right, especially since you just got the 2020 MBP not to long ago. After 3yrs, do you see a decline in the performance of your laptops ? (MacBooks)

Computers do not get "old" with age. They don't "slow down". Either they work or they don't. If you reformat/reinstall and use the exact same OS revision and the exact same software you did, when you first purchased the computer, it will feel JUST as fast as it did when you first bought it... even 20 years later. The ONLY reason a computer 3-5 years old will feel slower is because either the OS revisions have gotten bloated and use more resources (most likely), or there is corruption (malware or glitches in the filesystem or wherever) in the OS that needs to be purged (reformat/reinstall). And... BINGO! There's your lighting fast computer again!

Ahh I see, thats what I thought when I had my iPhone 5 when my pro max was with apple awhile back and it was updated with the newest iOS at that time and it was just awful, laggy, glitchy etc. I was thinking perhaps if I were to restore it to its OG firmware it may work a bit better.

Nearly 4 GB download every time!! What ever happened to incremental updates? 😩

4 gigs for a couple of minor changes. Absolute jokes.

Count yourselves lucky...

I think you have to see the enormous job they've done doing this transfer of my Mac from a table radio grade to an experimental software ATMOS server. I was around in the big Hi Fi craze. Bachelors had high fidelity everything. It cost thousands to get a real state-of-the-art rig, with electrostatic speaker panels and woofers 6 feet dep. This is cheaper. And you either like spatial audio or you don't. ATMOS is a gas for certain movies or music. The kind that flies around in your room Apple has an impressive chip in that ugly old HomePod. Put two together, it's a unique sound. A lot of pop music will go with it, and I think it's movie sound for a long while. Spatial music is great for many things. How many tracks? Anywhere from 2 (at least a stereo) to somewhere in the 20s.On the ceiling, in the air, you can focus the sound anywhere you want. Beam-forming. I think it's like 9 channels or so it maxes out for. Nine channels from all locations. Not enough. ATMOS has 20 sound "objects" you can place anywhere. It's 3D sound. I love it. With audio, it works. With pictures, you end up with crappy flat, blurry 3D movies.

I really hope they have fixed the Bluetooth connectivity bug, that has plagued Big Sur from the get go. Catalina didn't have any issues. My keyboard and mouse keeps losing connection. Downloading update now, crossing fingers.

But seriously, 3.5Gb update for this?!
