iTunes was doing way WAY WAY too much for one program. It was SO SLOW, even on my top of the line 2019 i9 iMac. It was just ridiculously slow. Now the new apps are snappier.
As far as I can tell, the Music app actually performs a lot worse than iTunes when browsing or scrolling through a large music library. In fact, I can't think of a single thing it does better.

It obviously needs update. Every software does, regularly. Have you heard about software decay? Unless it's constantly maintained, it slowly degrades to the point of unusability. You chose to rely on completely outdated and unmaintained software, of course it was going to fail after a while. It was a train wreck waiting to happen.
You've got a pretty cool crystal ball there. Wish I had one.
Here's me perfectly happy with a fully functioning software application just happily using it with no problems and you've seen a cliff edge up ahead that me and my PS3 are about to drive over. Thanks!

This update is just awful. I have thousands of audiobook files and Catalina has decided to move them into the Library inside folders...

There's no way of knowing what's what!!?!?! All I see is...

This is an absolute sh*tshow! I have always been happy to move with the times when it comes to updates but splitting up iTunes was meant to make things easier. Instead they've completely complicated things.

Luckily I have a back up so I'll be Time Machining back to OS12 when I get home

I suggest not updating to Catalina

I have a couple of questions...

1. How do your non-Apple audiobooks show in the Books application? Do they show as a "Collection"?
2. How do you get your non-Apple audiobooks onto your iPhone?

Where do I tell it to sort my 64 bit, I don't see that option anywhere?
On Mojave after you click on "Applications" there will be a "64-Bit" field to the right. If it says Yes then it's 64 bit. If it says No then it's not.

Also during the pre install checks it will let you know what apps you have that are 32 bit

What is with these Preboot and Preboot1 folders? I upgraded from Mojave to Catalina (APFS to APFS) though I have an external HD that is HFS+. Can I delete these folders?

IMO its always best to do a clean install if possible. Cleans out all the accumulated crud. YMMV

Thanks. I'll look in to making a USB installer. The last time I did a clean install was on my old iMac. I downloaded the OS and did a carbon copy clone backup, which I then booted into to format the Mac drive, then ran the installer. I'll see if I can use the USB installer this time, and format the SSD during setup, if I can do that.
Still on the fence about updating, so I'll do a bit more reading to see how others are going with it.

That's what I did. Tried and true. I've been doing it since Jaguar (10.2). Went smooth as silk.
I think a lot to the problems people have is "upgrading". Especially on releases with major changes like Majove to Catalina.

I know that, I was asking the other poster how to show the 64 bit field column since it doesn't show up in Catalina.

I hope Steam has been updated to work properly on Catalina. The other day (sometime in August), macOS warned me that it won't work on future versions of macOS, but I haven't seen anything from Valve stating it's Catalina ready.

Well, there's only one way to find out.

I'm not holding my breath for Steam games.

There's SO MANY people out there that don't know they're about to lose their games. I don't understand why Apple had to do this.

Not all games are lost. I am still able to play Terraria, Factorio and Stardew Valley. I was mostly worried about Terraria since it can run an very low hardware and was made in 2011. It still supports Windows XP too!

It works fine. I upgraded and I am still able to play games.

Yup. Because of this my $420 Fujitsu ScanSnap becomes unusable if I upgrade since the ScanSnap software is 32 bit and an upgraded software is not available. There is a 64 bit version of a newer differently named software that is NOT compatible with my scanner. So I can either buy a newer model or more likely I will partition my drive and dual boot into Mojave for Scanner operations. Not looking forward to that!!!

I also have an old ScanSnap that is unsupported, but you do have an alternative ...

Vuescan by Hamrick Software supports like 6000 scanners, and works better than Fujitsu's (terrible, bloated) software. Only downside is it is expensive ($50 or $100 with built-in OCR.). Works great, well supported and the license is lifetime.

Protip for the future:

If you buy a scanner or a printer, buy something that's network connected. They typically don't need low-level drivers and won't be obsoleted by OS upgrades in the future.

It's especially good if it provides a local web interface for scanning. However, beware of anything that requires cloud services.

How many like myself are using a 32 bit version of PhotoShop?
You know, the pay once installed version that works great and needs no update which I use almost daily.

I used to be in that boat, but eventually abandoned my ever-aging bought-and-paid-for copy of CS5 Master Collection in favor of Affinity Photo and Designer (and now Publisher) years ago. I can honestly say I haven't missed Adobe's products at all. For what it's worth, all of the Serif Affinity apps work great on Catalina.

This is a really problematic update for one Apple devotee. A whole bunch of 32 bit apps are going to become inoperative and the amount of work to update all the older video files across my numerous drives are too much to bear at this point in time.
