I also have an old ScanSnap that is unsupported, but you do have an alternative ...

Vuescan by Hamrick Software supports like 6000 scanners, and works better than Fujitsu's (terrible, bloated) software. Only downside is it is expensive ($50 or $100 with built-in OCR.). Works great, well supported and the license is lifetime.
Hmm. Thanks. I currently use the OCR in ScanSnap but scan to DEVONthink. I could upgrade to the higher end of that which does OCR and then use your reco. I’ll look at it.

Thanks for the reply but I’m already reverting back to OS12.
The sad thing is I was looking forward to using different apps for music, audiobooks, podcast, etc, but making my files difficult to find and unorganized is taking the piss. why can’t the audiobook files be stored in the same way as music files?!?!

Yeah I might be doing the same. I like the new apps but Catalina already locked up three times for me :(

Install did not go smoothly for me. Got stuck once booting up like most others here. I let it sit for some time before rebooting the Mac. Screens got locked up during the boot up and wouldn't let me click buttons to continue forward.

Install took forever. Now my Macbook's CPUs are at 100% updating my 120+GB photos library, which, showed unchecked with iCloud initially (but upon upgrading, showed checked and in iCloud) - just let it do its thing, don't intervene. Still at 100% CPU "detecting duplicates, etc..." over an hour later - 30% done.

After updating I got all these, how do I remove them

My main drive looks similar with just one - data.

I connected an AFPS+ Encrypted disk I use for CCC And it renamed that disk -data-data and kept failing.

Sounds like the way to go. I also have a time machine backup going as well, did you restore data from TM or CCC?

Speaking of CCC ..... it refuses to back up to my AFPS+ encrypted disks now. :/ CCC wants me to reformat my disks unencrypted AFPS, then encrypt them after booting into them.... wtf.

Guess my laptop is up for a long 100% CPU night (thanks to my massive photos library).

I thought there was going to be a battery saver option like iOS 13 ... guess I remembered wrong. :p

For whatever reason OS Catalina is playing a lot nicer with my 4k Samsung monitor than the previous os.

Could an 8GB USB Pendrive be used or is it too small? With previous versions of macOS until Mojave I have always used 8GB ones without problems.
The Installer comes in at Over 8gb and as 16gb is the next size up it will have to be 16gb You could try 8gb but I think it would fail. The first betas were 4gb but they were very buggy then around beta 4 they went up to 8gb

I’m tempted to update but with major projects looming in the near future I think I’ll need to wait this one out a month or so. (dang my inner sys admin, and his increasing caution)

This update is just awful. I have thousands of audiobook files and Catalina has decided to move them into the Library inside folders...

/Users/myname/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books/Audiobooks/sha1-128f30fe0cba89b3b92d1aabe9900a471b0f23e4

There's no way of knowing what's what!!?!?! All I see is...

This is an absolute sh*tshow! I have always been happy to move with the times when it comes to updates but splitting up iTunes was meant to make things easier. Instead they've completely complicated things.

Luckily I have a back up so I'll be Time Machining back to OS12 when I get home

I suggest not updating to Catalina

I gets worse. Collections - gonezo. Bar that shows the number of books you have - non-existant. Select a bunch of books - no info on how many or how large the files are. And it considered "A" in a title, e.g. "A History of" as alphabetized in the A's.

My iTunes server was updated because it had no other apps installed to worry about. But this is awful and my home and work Macbooks aren't getting touched by 10.15.

I use Scansnap sort of - I have a Fujitsu Scansnap ix500, and all scans go directly to Evernote. Apparently with Catalina, this scanner will no longer work.

I update my MacBook Pro to Catalina, but I am waiting on 2 Mac's (and 2 Scansnap ix500 or whatever they are called) until some solution can be found.

Anyone out there using Evernote and the wonderful Fujitsu Scansnap ix500 scanner?

Aha! There is a Fujitsu ix1500 now. Anyone want to buy 2 ix500 scanners :)

Edit again - maybe I can get the ix500 scanners to work with Evernote on Catalina after all. I'll try on one machine and see.

In Music, open Preferences, General, under "Show" check iTunes Store... It's like magic LOL
I'm not digging it so far. Especially the TV app. How can I browse TV shows and Movies by Genre in the store and see all the content? The suggestions on the respective pages in TV app is hardly anything

Hi,

Curious as to how you accomplished this... I have a Mid 2014 15" MBP, but am not ready to download this just yet... Care to share?... Thanks in advance...

iCloud Drive folder sharing*
You can now share folders with a private link. Anyone who has access can see the folder in iCloud Drive, add new files, and get the latest versions of files.

Communication Limits*
Communication Limits let you control who your children can communicate with and who can communicate with them throughout the day and during downtime.

* Coming this spring.

It seems some of these features will be pushed till next year now.

I did 4 Macs tonight:

2017 iMac Pro
2014 Mac mini
2018 MacBook Pro 13"
2017 MacBook

All of them had the "Sign into iCloud" issue, which of course required a sign out/sign in. Very annoying, but ultimately problem solved.

The iMac Pro was my first update, and the set up screen prompted me to turn on "Find My", but referenced my AppleID as using an email/ID that I haven't used in >1 year. Kinda had me worried for a bit, but everything else seems to be working well.

Also, if you go into About This Mac, Storage, Manage, Documents, Unsupported Apps, you will find all the cruft left over from any 32 bit apps no longer supported.

Network time machine is not going swimmingly for me so far. About 7 hours and still “preparing for backup.”

I am at the login screen and the wheel has been spinning for 10 minutes. Anyone else?

Edit: it passed that screen as well

SPACE WARNING - I started installing Catalina over 6 hours ago, i had 165gb free from 2tb drive on MacBook Pro, at about the 3 hour point it slowed down con with the update, with the progress bar stopped. I called Apple and turns out Catalina installs a separate partition for the os, I tried restarting and got into recovery mod. The hard drive had a second drive partition with the original drive only having about 10gb of space. I am letting this run for a few more hours hoping it completes before I do a restore. I would recommend that anyone that is doing a install have at least 25% free space on there hard drive or more.

I just installed it. After my install experience of having it on the 'setting up your mac' and then getting we are having trouble identifying my built in keyboard on my 2017 Mac Pro. It does not instill confidence in me.

I used to be in that boat, but eventually abandoned my ever-aging bought-and-paid-for copy of CS5 Master Collection in favor of Affinity Photo and Designer (and now Publisher) years ago. I can honestly say I haven't missed Adobe's products at all. For what it's worth, all of the Serif Affinity apps work great on Catalina.

This is exactly what I'm testing on my portable today, Affinity Designer and Photo as a replacement for Photoshop/Illustrator CS6. The easy method would be to just throw cash at Creative Cloud, but Adobe has been a problem developer for too many upgrade cycles, and I only have room for one Avid in my life.

So far I miss the trace tool in Illustrator, which I probably only use 2 or 3 times a year. Aside from that, Affinity Designer seems much snappier and seems to do what I need.

Haven't tried Affinity Photo yet, but looks like it opens up my .psd files without any trouble.

Tell you what... just installing Affinity vs Adobe anything is a very clear demonstration of how poor of a company and Mac developer that Adobe has become.

Photoshop CS6 does run, but you have to open the app's package contents, look in the MacOS folder and launch the Photoshop executable in the Terminal. Which shouldn't work, but another example of how half assed Adobe code has been written over the years.

Tried the music app for the first time. It's worse than I expected. Apple needs to hire people who care about the UX again

Uh... worse? Click on Songs under Library in the left sidebar. Looks exactly like iTunes since like forever.

After reading a few pages of this title, I'm waiting for at least a .2 upgrade.
With 40 years experience in IT mostly with a $2B developer of software and hardware, I'm fed up with Apple using we users for doing their QC for them.
Apparently the beta testing process didn't uncover the bugs, gremlins and erroneous system design.
I'm quite comfortable with Mojave with Photos, iTunes and lots of apps that are working fine. Some of the new features seem designed mostly for power users and kids. Catalyst is just another fund stream for Apple.
Features like Dark display, limitless emoji toys, and vastly overpriced Beats hardware adoption philosophy just accentuate the fact that hard core upgrades and new designs are no longer Apple expectations. It's icing on the cake, some of it useful.
My flip phone just talks, and my Touch links to my Echos to play my 15,000 iTunes tracks anywhere in my house. Amazon Prime, Neflx and DVDs from my local library provide limitless, free, GOOD entertainment on my smart Samsung. I can live without Apple TV app for a long time. Show me something really new Apple.
Congratulation to the guys whose Catalina is working fine. I'll join you later - a clean Catalina looks worthwhile.
When I notice the critical static die down in a few months or so, and "The Book that Should Have Been in the Box" is published for my review, I'll try Catalina. In the meantime, I'm too busy exploring all of Mojave to accept a box of potential problems.
Apple is going to obsolete my late 2012 iMacs and iPad Air 2 collection soon anyhow.
11/8 Now forum reports iTune purchases not working. What next?
