And for the sake of corroboration and completeness, dark mode :)

its download 11.6.1 what the hell is going on
Last Friday I had an 11.6.1 update that was 11.25GB.

Just now when I checked for updates it offered me Monterey and ... 11.6.1, this time at 2.2GB. So I click the Apple logo -> About This Mac, and it says I'm already running 11.6.1.

So, yeah. I dunno.

Edit to add: it has also given me that stupid device support update at least 4 times the last couple of weeks. I install it and a few days later, there it is again.

why does "preparing update" always take so long? (ioS and OSX). What's going on?
this is intentional. Since MacOS Big Sur, updates are partially installed in the background while you can still use your Mac. Before Big Sur the entire update had to be installed in the “update mode” (Apple logo + white loading bar). This way power users and nerds like us have to wait less before we can use our favorite device again. Before Big Sur it could take over 30 minutes before my iMac was usable again, now it’s done within 20.

Downloading in Sweden now over 1000mbps Fiber. Circa 10 minutes in total

Well, that's weird. It finally finished downloading and came up with an error saying: "The package InstallAssistant.pkg fails to meet Gatekeeper policy."

And then it started downloading 11.6.1 on its own... So I made it manually find Monterey again by using the link in the App Store, and it started downloading from the beginning... Screw it, I give up for tonight.

Oof, 2+ hours to download on a 500mbps connection. I think I'll wait a few days.
Doesn't sound right, or at least not universal - I have an ostensibly 1Gbps connection, but over Wifi link that blazing speed, never materializes, on speed tests, fastest I ever see is maybe 385mbps. That download screenshot I posted a little while ago that showed 39 min to go after 894MB downloaded completed in under 18 minutes. D/L'd on 2020 M1 Mac Mini.
