This is as far as I've gotten & now I'm in stuck in the land of not knowing what on earth is happening - whether it's crashed or if it's just taking a long time. View attachment 1878106
mine did that and then after a long time the installer suddenly appeared. but it feels like a fresh install, it's a bit odd...

However i typed in my password thinking it will ask more questions but now it's just running the install so i really hope it doesn't break everything, I really should have done a time machine backup first... ops :/

Doesn't sound right, or at least not universal - I have an ostensibly 1Gbps connection, but over Wifi link that blazing speed, never materializes, on speed tests, fastest I ever see is maybe 385mbps. That download screenshot I posted a little while ago that showed 39 min to go after 894MB downloaded completed in under 18 minutes. D/L'd on 2020 M1 Mac Mini. View attachment 1878086

If I remember correctly previous macOS will instantly reboot and and you have to wait around 30 min for the installation. So is this screen / part of the process new? That you can continue to use your machine while it is "sort of" installing.

I have looked during the last couple MacOS upgrades, but I can't find where the download is saved on my Mac. I would like to know where the file is saved, so I don't have to download it multiple times. Can anyone enlighten me?
When you download (and before doing the installation) there will be a “Install macOS Monterey” app in your Applications folder. After installation it removes that file, so you need to put a copy elsewhere to save it.

Ok, this is nerv-wrecking. I thought I had set the start-up disk since it boots from my HD :)

Brb.

12.13GB download finished in a few minutes. Glad I didn't have to keep retrying the download. Installation has begun on the M1 MBA. I will hold off installing on the Mac mini server.

Edited to add: I just got this error during the install process. Anyone know what it means?

Just got that, re-downloading 12GB again... fun
I am going to try to update to 11.6.1 first.
I googled the error and that is one of the solutions when people got that error with Big Sur.

Some users have encountered an error message stating “The package %@ is missing or invalid” when attempting to download or upgrade to macOS Big Sur.

This problem can sometimes be resolved by installing any available system software updates on the Mac first.

Also, sometimes changing the wi-fi network (or turning off wi-fi if you’re on ethernet), and then deleting and re-downloading the macOS Big Sur installer can sometimes resolve the error

Installation failed ?

I downloaded the update. It takes about one hour to prepare the installation and you can keep using the computer in the meantime. After this whole hour, I pressed "Install", it said it would quit all apps (sure, do as you like), but then I'm back on my startup screen and have to start again the installation.

Hope it works the second time.
Reset PRAM and try again. I've noticed that it's alway a good idea to Reset the PRAM before installing a version update, both major or minor.
