It could be worse. Of the 3 major updates Microsoft has put out on Patch Tuesday so far in 2024 all three have had issues and not just issues experienced by a small, negligible number of users either. I work in the Windows IT world. Fun times so far in 2024!!! I’m just glad it’s not my group’s turn to plush out Windows updates internally or to clients this quarter. What a cluster bleep….

Welp. I just updated while at work and I was connected to an external monitor. Now after the update it no longer recognizes the external monitor. Juuuuuust great. MacBook Pro M1
lol had this same issue on a dell monitor hub. had to unplug it a few times

So you said after not using it for a while? and that work laptop will be running all sorts of corporate stuff on it... and some of that corporate software.. which has nothing to do with Microsoft, is an absolute nightmare to deal with. That extra software is resource hungry and causes numerous issues.

No way should you compare any device thats corporate to a regular consumer device. They are loaded to the hilt with corporate garbage thats designed to track, monitor and supposedly enhance security. It's a multibillion dollar software industry in itself. Anyone who has ever used a corporate device will know what I mean.

Compare a straight Microsoft install (no corporate junk) with a straight MacOS install and then report back 😂
The laptop was a clean install and didn’t have any “corporate junk” on it at the time, since I didn’t come around to installing Microsoft Company Portal on it yet. So what are you talking about exactly?

Well better late than never I suppose. Super glad I didn’t upgrade my companies Mac Mini to 14.4 when it can’t out which is running them Unifi Controller in it (which is Java based, unfortunately). I’ll probably still wait a couple days before I upgrade it to 14.4.1 just to make sure people aren’t still having Java issues.

PSA: After upgrading to 14.4.1, Mac reboots and prompts to store Desktop and Documents folders in iCloud with the checkbox ON ... even if you had it OFF previously. If you just click OK without reading, you'll have a surprise, especially if you don't have enough free storage in iCloud, or don't want your Desktop and Documents synced.

ALSO, it turned on iCloud Photos WITHOUT asking!

I don't know... recently Microsoft updates have been super fast and no issues... meanwhile Apple updates on MacOS seem to take so so long, even on an M2 I have .... and so many bugs... although none of them affect me directly lol
What do you mean by recently? Microsoft puts out a dozen updates every week. Most of them don’t really do much. I keep waiting for them to actually improve something meaningful but I haven’t seen anything change for a long time. The major changes in the last year have been increased spyware, AI that’s been trained on stolen stuff and a new Outlook UI that barely has any space for the actual email portion.

Microsofts operating system is one of the worlds most popular OS... it runs on far more hardware than MacOS, is relied on by businesses and institutions such as hospitals and universities...

Im sure, from a security and efficiency aspect, they wished it ran on a limited number of hardware like MacOS 😂

As per Apple updates... most updates change things you don't really see as a user.

Ive updated Apps on my iPhone so many times... yet I still do the same thing, it still works the same... it doesnt mean the updates are useless.

Something went really wrong with the development of the 14.4 update. I have never seen so many problems with an update. I hope this latest update fixes all of the issues.

So occasional MS Defender revision, a lot more frequent Security Intelligence Updates (usually daily) for MS Defender. The Cumulative Preview then 2 weeks later Cumulative Update for Windows 11 is about once a month. They are shown as 2024-01, 02, 03 as examples.

MacOS includes a security technology called Gatekeeper, which is designed to help ensure that only trusted software runs on a user’s Mac. When a user downloads and opens an app, a plug-in, or an installer package from outside the App Store, Gatekeeper verifies that the software is from an identified developer, is notarized by Apple to be free of known malicious content, and hasn’t been altered. Gatekeeper also requests user approval before opening downloaded software for the first time to make sure the user hasn’t been tricked into running executable code they believed to simply be a data file.
Your Mac automatically installs Rapid Security Responses, security-configuration updates, and system data files in the background.

Keeping your software up to date is one of the most important things you can do to maintain the security of your Mac. That includes installing all security updates and other macOS software updates, and making sure that your Mac is set up to get these background updates promptly:

By default, these updates are installed or applied automatically. They don't cause your Mac to restart, but some take effect only after you restart your Mac.
=====
As you can see while in Windows 11 you notice all these Security Intelligence Updates being done almost daily, but those are not the same as a MacOS point releases for security vulnerabilities (CVE), the run-time equivalent is updated in the background all the time. :)

Yes, Windows is the choice when you don’t make a choice. But to be honest, lately I find myself wondering whether businesses and institutions, let alone hospitals, should rely on an OS that is the primary dataminer on the computer. Microsoft has slowly inched further and further into the ”users are the product” territory and it is very challenging nowadays to stop all the ways MS mines your data to be sold. It took me three weeks to find all the nooks and crannies in Windows 11 that had data sharing settings and with each update, there’s always the risk of them introducing more.

And turning off all the datamining features means no widgets, no Cortana, no Edge, definitely no AI and staying away from most Microsoft apps.

For all their faults, so far Apple has not sold my data to anyone. I still use both, but with MS I need to keep a close eye on everything so that I don’t become the product.

The problem is that Apple also likes to release its most recent security updates also on the newest version of the system, which is also important for key systems.
THIS. With Microsoft, you have the luxury of not updating to the newest features while still getting security patches and bug fixes. With Apple, all three of those things have to align before they'll push out an update.

Aerial screensaver still freezing after a cycle or 2 on my M1 Studio Ultra. Doesn't happen on MacBook Pro, air or Mac mini though...

Huh, yup, same thing here. And Settings/General/Storage will not let me turn off the checkboxes for "Desktop and Documents," "Photos," and "Messages."

When I turn them all off, Settings goes gray and there's no way to get out. If I leave one of them on, the only options are "Cancel" and "Store In Cloud."

This is very bad, if it defaults to Cloud storage with no way to turn it off.

I had several Mac's update and I have had bugs with not being able to close windows and in Safari sites that used to work fine are no longer working.

Does it finally fix "unexpected ejections" of some drive enclosures that maintain a consistent connection on pre-Big Sur Macs and on any Windows PC? Or does that problem continue to persist for some- but not all- HDD & SSD enclosures? Coming up on 4 years with this problem now. Via same cable, hook it to any Mac with macOS older than Big Sur and it is as stable as it can be. Connect to Macs with macOS Big Sur or newer and it can't stay connected for more than about 3 hours, whether I let the Mac sleep or not (it can even "unexpectedly eject" during active file transfers).

Every time they take a crack at USB bug fixes, I hope they finally get to this one. I'd love for the U in USB to mean what it is supposed to mean on my Silicon Mac. I miss "just works" Apple.
Nope, still "enjoying" those unexpected "ejections" with my mix USB/SSD Drive enclosure after upgrading...

Not a surprise after almost 4 years of the same but Wow! What happened to “just works” Apple… and Apple making the U in USB mean what it is supposed to mean? Maybe next update…or maybe next year… or the year after that. 🤪
