First of - I think the new Macbook Pro line is really great. Here are some things that I still expect and hope for:

- BluRay drives and support in MacOS X !
- OLED displays
- standard SSDs w/ 512 gigs

Not sure about the SD slot. For me its better, for Video Pros not so much.

noticably?? no. faster? DEF! you would see anywhere from a 5sec-20sec increase in processing times (depending on what you do). startup-times & app startup times wouldnt really be any different.

ok just realised that the 3.06GHz uses 6MB cache, in saying that (and not looking at any benchmarks - could check out the iMac benchmarks if these use the extreme version of the chips) i think the increments would be quite a bit more impressive then that.

I did call them and after waiting eons to finally get through they insisted that there was absolutely nothing they could do for me, that I had to deal with the retail store.

You may have better luck if you called Apple's customer relations department.

10 steps forward, 8 steps back...

Can't say I have any problem with the lack of dedicated graphics on the cheaper 15" model. I know a lot of Mac type users (my parents come to mind) that would like a bigger screen but couldn't care less about a dedicated GPU. The price of the entry level 15" hasn't changed.

Also, it looks like the throngs of angry people were heard concerning the death of Firewire on the 13" Macbook.

The loss of the Expresscard slot though... that's a blow and it makes me happy I bought the 1st gen unibody. For most people the SD reader is probably more useful but... BUT... on a machine that's already really limited in upgrade options that one kind of stings. That was the only option for eSATA which I happen to use because it's WAY faster on external drives than USB and cheaper than Firewire 800 external enclosures (which get nailed with a pretty nasty premium in general). And, on top of that, FW800 isn't as fast or efficient at talking to a SATA drive as eSATA. Ugh. Oh well, it's an irritation rather than something really deal breaking.

It would have been nice to see the higher end 15" MBP with the dedicated GPU keep the ExpressCard slot. Oh well.

(I was hoping for Quad Core too but... I don't really know why. Replacing my current unibody after only 8 months seems a bit ridiculous.)

Here's to looking toward this time next year when I'll consider upgrading again.

(At least all the Snow Leopard news was awesome.)

It's very interesting to watch the price reductions. Typically Apple would provide more value at the same price. Economy and Microsoft attack ads at work.

Scott: And now the iPhone 3G |S| supports tethering and MMS w/ video!
Me: Finally! And pretty impressive too boot.
Scott: And all these carriers...
Me: *sees no AT&T logo*
Me: LOL, AT&T suckzors! Total fail.

Haaaaaaaaa ha.... im with Rogers. :)

Wow.. dudes its so sucks who bought macbook & MBP unibody in the last half-year
so much upgrades in the past half-year:p
& this is really the good one..

Removable vs Unremovable battery ?

Sorry to see the card slot gone on the 15"--on principle--but all I've ever used those slots for is an SD reader anyway. And there are other ways to attach most hardware.

Sadly, there's no way to use eSATA drives other than via ExpressCard slot..

Glad to see FW 800 on the 13".. but the loss of ExpressCard slot and the removable battery on the 15" is BS..

The 15" is no longer "pro"

Glad I have mine.

Apple needs to start offering Blu-Ray on their laptops and desktops. this is freaking ridiculous how long it is taking them to support the format.

Sorry, just can't understand why you'd pay a premium for a Bluray disk and then watch it on a laptop... With many HD disks offering the iTunes version of the movie for download w/ code or DVD in the case, I'm even more at a loss as to why so many people (not just you mdntcallr) see this as an issue..

As far as burn/authoring support, yes, I'm shocked that Apple hasn't offered support..

Taking away the Express Card slot is just taking away one more feature that every other laptop has and with it, the ability to make up for the many other ports and features the Mac laptops were lacking in the first place.

Beforehand I expected quite a lot from the keynote.. but it sure was right disappointing.

Wanted to upgrade my Macbook Pro: but still no blu-ray drive? $1000+ for 4GB of Ram? Internal battery? Quite disappointing. Wanted to upgrade badly... but somehow it looks like I will have to search for an alternative.

The iPhone's a joke too... I thought they would actually bring something, that would/could be much more competitive.

From the keynote: actually quite boring. Its not Apple's style that demo's fail to work, and that more than once. Also: No goodie at all.. I think they should have atleast aimed to release some software update for the keynote.. either the iPhone OS 3.0 or Snow Leopard.

I'm with you on the Blu-ray support. I would never want to spend $25 for a blu-ray and then watch it on my laptop. The ability to read and burn would be nice though.

The deal breaker

Well,
I was holding on onto my Powerbook G4 for five long years and really, really wanted to upgrade this year. Nothing on the new Mac Book Pro lines bothers me, I actually think they're good laptops. Except for one thing and that's the screen.
I just cannot believe that Apple still doesn't offer a matte screen option.
And that is a deal breaker for me. My G4 is getting really slow, cannot even install Snow Leopard on it since it's Power PC but the screen is so important to me that I will (sadly) wait for the next MBP upgrade.
I hope it'll happen one day...

I remember readin in MANY places that we were supposed to see Apple Pro App (logic, final cut etc) MAJOR updates yesterday... Have we all just gotten f'd off once again in in the interest of the overrated iphone?

Of course you have, Apple is all-consumer now. :p

Guys, I don't get it

If you are the kind of customer, that needs expresscard slot and FW 800, you have 17'' for you.

Now, I am more pissed for apple not making any low-entry notebook (aka netbook), up to the point where I really think about buying the Dell one and hacking OSX86 on it (AFAIK, dell mini 9 is the one that is most compatible with os x)

...at the cost of portability. It's in this thread just a short while back (amongst others).

No need to think, just read. :p

What about 3G support?

Seriously, APPLE
pricing is nice, but if you want to offer notebooks made for tomorrow, you need at least to keep up with competitors.

And this definitely includes a HSPDA modem (sim slot). In the end, it's still a portable computer ... any yes, maybe Blue-Ray although I’m not using that.

That's coming in the next revision - at the expense of ethernet port and optical media. :p

I've waited half a year for today and now it seems I got kicked in the teeth - I really wanted a 15inch MBP with the GT card, but didn't want to pay the 1500GBP that they now ask for it :(

Why have they put in a 7 hour non-removable battery? Most 15inch MBP users don't use it on battery only very often..

I hope someone writes a buying guide for the MBPs now cos I'm a bit lost. Maybe the early 2009 15 inch MBP is a better machine than the current baseline MBP?

Didn't someone come out with a matte (or perhaps antiglare) film could apply to the screen at one point? Thought there were $20-30 films can apply that reduce glare. Ironic that Apple trying to kill off the Macworld Expo since folks can find solutions that way:
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent...restores_mattescreen_macbook_pro_service.html

That's rather extreme though.

The new ones are suppose to have 60% better color gamut output. Better colors coming out glossy or not is better. ( matte diffuses colors coming out of the screen as well as those from the outside so pick your poison. )

Part of this glossy is that Apple is using glass to cover the LCD and compose the bezel. Kind of wonder if there is some "green" constraint they are trying to meet that throws out the matte screens. ( some chemical treatment or there is no arsenic free matte glass to get). Perhaps they also want to seal the LCD/LEDs for some reason behind the glass.

It could be just because the glossy screens 'pop' colors better (when not dealing the to much specular refelctions), but then again maybe not.
