This ad reminds me,

In the early '90's Apple was making ads saying they are #1 PC maker and more people use Mac's every day then any other PC.

Deja vu?

What in the $*%# are you talking about?

Macs were NEVER anywhere near the #1 selling PCs, and they never advertised as such. Maybe #1 for education, but nothing else.

(Only from 1977 to 1980 when the Apple II was around, and there was no such thing as an IBM PC would Apple been the #1 selling PC. But after 1981, Apple was never best selling. It's been over 30 years since Apple had 'dominance')

When is FaceTime going to get group chat?

Well, you can already do that on android via "hangouts" and Skype via group chat, and nobody uses it, so they probably don't need to bother.

I've "watched" a facetime conversation more than a few times, and it isn't magic. If everyone is on iphones, it works well, as long as you have a good connection. I've seen some really crappy "4G" facetime calls that were just pointless. 2spf and completely blurry with audio cutting out every 3-4 seconds isn't what I would call a "superior" experience.

And let's not forget that the iPhone was the very first phone to offer native videochats, so Apple gets the credit for kickstarting the whole mobile videochat revolution with FaceTime. I don't even know if any phones had a front facing camera before Apple invented FaceTime.

I assume you are talking about the US. Because when I was abroad in Australia in fall of 2007 I saw commercials about video chat on phones. That's a full 3 years before the iPhone 4.

My point exactly. It's nice when having a good connection and when many people are able to use facetime as well. But reality is that iPhone is loosing market share big time and when I'm abroad I would like to be able to make at least a phone call as cheap as possible and if possible maybe with video as well. Fo video it's nice to have good wifi which sometimes is the case when I'm at a hotel and knowing the other person that I'm calling is able to get a videochat as well, with skype if way more choices for calling people when using video then with facetime. For me it's a no brainer which to use then.

I like Apple very much, I'm using iPhone myself, but at the end it's just a device that serves 'me' not the other way around. So I simple use what would be the most handy program to use.

Déjà vu? You betcha - but only in terms of a zealot claiming that Apple is the no. one PC maker. Apple never went above a 10% market share with computers. And while it was above that mark with smartphones, it's rapidly approaching the 10% threshold there as well (rendering Facetime quite useless at the same time - nine out of 10 users can't use it, so why bother? Skype can be installed on 95% of all handsets and works great).

I don't agree with this ad personally. I rarely touch FaceTime.

I was just going to say something along the lines of this. I think I've used Facetime only a few times since it came out. I did use it while I was down in Central America last summer, but I don't think I've used it since.

I was actually wondering how often the people on here actually use it? Do you guys use Facetime on a regular basis?

I guess the people in the ad have better luck with FaceTime than the rest of us ...

These adverts are going to be a 2-3yr campaign... exact opposite of what Microsoft is doing with their recent ads attacking the iPhone/iPad.

Who is Microsoft's Marketing Director by the way???????!!!! Needs to go back to Marketing 101 in my opinion.

Apple is building its brand through a very indirect practicality type of marketing... I think it's ingenious, and within time this only makes Apple more Apple.

Love the adverts... nothing mind blowing, but at this time, they don't need to be doing crazy ads - they just need to show the legit experience/daily use of what makes Apple, Apple... and the iPhone the iPhone.

They will change the way we buy things... and that is when this campaign will start coming to its fruition. It starts with this, but will end with how we purchase things now with the iPhone. Next iPhone is big news.

Facetime and Skype are two different products. Facetime enhances the old fashioned phone call, where you type someones number in and just talk... where Skype has a whole slew of VoIP calling features, buddy lists, online statuses... it's social media vs the real world. Some people prefer the social media approach, but I like Facetime's "It just fits into your world." approach.

I think the beauty of these ads is conveying the iPhone's global appeal.
It includes all nationalities and a wide age demographic which certainly makes it relatable.

BTW, I think almost every phone manufacturer has these 'moments' type commercials. It's only natural to show how these devices touch our lives. Some are done better than others.

Except that it's not actually "building" its brand but rather deconstructing it. While I don't really care for Microsoft's ads either, Apple's approach clearly isn't working, considering the fact that they've been losing market share for years now - in the computer sector, in the smartphone sector and now also in the tablet business. It's Apple who should re-think their marketing strategy, not the competitors.

What "appeal" are you talking about? This one? http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2013/07/26/apple-iphone-global-market-share-slips.html

or perhaps that one? http://www.inquisitr.com/415222/ipad-market-share-drops-14-in-q3-2012/

"Apple has released a new iPhone"... Ad? Ugh. Is this all apple releases anymore?

How is the brand being destructed?

Why & How do you think they are losing market share? Make sure you explain how...

Lets be honest to everyone on here - Google/Android along with Samsung are out producing/manufacturing Apple, and offering a 2nd Tier device that is much much much much much more affordable to the masses then the iPhone. Sometimes, it is that simple - the price point of Apple is what makes Apple, Apple. Market Share & Stock was never their top priority, building great products with the business principal of profits by margins is what they care about... they care about Profits not Revenue. They care about product experience not product market share.

Apple is doing what Apple does best, and what they always have been doing. Once again, please explain how this ad hurts("deconstructs") Apple?

Or is it helping the brand, and allowing for a new product/service to get into the market with a better position in the near short-term???

What's your insight kis?

Apple shipped more iPhones in the second quarter than ever before,

Apple is selling more devices than it ever has. Just the market got bigger overall with cheap junk phones and tablets overflowing it. Lets not even begin to get into actual usage data which clearly shows iOS as the winner by far.

Personal

It's already been said... beautiful music for these ads. Apple has such a good grip on clear messages. My favorite thing about Apple ads (at least since they dropped the I'm a mac / pc thing) is that they have focused their marketing into promoting what is good about their products. Without a doubt one of my favorite mottos in life is, "Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate."

Keep it up Apple... now give me a 5" iPhone.

I'll be honest and this is my opinion... But this is borderline sexist, "sex-sells" territory. Why are 80% of the people in this commercial attractive young women? (And all similar apple commercials recently.)

Also, what seems like the only guy in the ad is "afraid" of kissing his SO over Facetime? Because men should naturally be afraid of displaying any emotion, and when he does, awww how cute. /s

C'mon Apple, you're better than this.

And hopefully so are you. You're reading too much into it.
