I found that the fastest and most reliable way to update the firmware on my AirPods 2 is to plug them into my M1 Macbook Air with the USB-C to Lightning cable.

They update instantly!

This is much better than the other method of "just wait and it should force the update after a short period of time."

:)
Yep! That did it.
Instant update on both APP and APM!

Thanks so much for sharing.🙏🏻

I didn't have any problems with the sound or anything, except switching devices and my APP would only detect 1 earbud on the iPhone, the other would connect to the MBP.
🤯

Resetting the Airpods didn't fix - so I hope this works now better.

I immediately noticed a tiny ANC change, I have a fan that I run in my office just about 100% of the time and the fan is more audible or the frequency of the sound blocked out changed. However, this is not in my head but transparency mode seems to be better at not amplifying stuff like breathing or talking to where it was a bit much. Personally, if this was the an actual fix Apple did I will trade a tiny bit of less or changed ANC for better transparency (still no where close to APP/2) on the APM.

Maybe it’s in my head but that‘s what my ears are telling me. YMMV.

A lot of confusion on the net if the airpods pro 2 got an update or not. Some sources say yes, some say no.

The apple support doc says "
  • AirPods Pro (2nd generation): 5B58

so i'm going to presume no update this time round.

Apple today introduced new 5B59 firmware for the AirPods 2, the AirPods 3, the original AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Max, up from the 5B58 firmware that was released in November.

Apple does not offer immediately available release notes on what's included in refreshed firmware updates for the AirPods‌, but the company does maintain a support document with release information.

There is no standard way to upgrade the ‌AirPods‌‌ software, but firmware is installed over-the-air while the ‌‌AirPods‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌‌ firmware by following these steps:
  • Connect your ‌‌AirPods‌‌ or ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to "Firmware Version."
If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we'll update this article, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

I did update my AirPods Pro buds. iOS 16.2 I found the version here (no need to connect them to Bluetooth): settings/Bluetooth/AirPods (pro)/info/version. LMK if this helps. 👍

Mine updated sometime last night. I can't tell what if anything is different, but I do find it very amusing how many dozens of posts we get here every single time, of people freaking out because they don't have the firmware update instantly.

What a nightmare for Airpods Max, connectivity issues have gotten way worse, automatic connection is beyond an utter mess between different devices, ANC is problematic. Apple really struggling with the exodus of software engineers. Airpods Max with the current firmware are not worth half of what they cost. Best part is that you can't even opt out of the firmware downgrades, Apple pushes them whether you like it or not.

AirPods Pro (1st gen) case still showing 0% charge when the pods are out of the case but shows correct % as soon as pods are back in the case 😕…been happening since the last firmware update (5B58)

Oh please. Been using mine 30 hours/week minimum since they were introduced. They're the best sounding headphones I've ever owned and they work flawlessly with my Macs, iPhone and Apple TV. They're built like a damn tank and are a joy to use every time I put them on. Just go buy some Sonys and move on, man.

I'm sorry that my personal experience hurt your feelings and thanks for the Sony recommendation, it's a no brainer after having spent 500€ for the joy that are Airpods Max.

It’s either that, or people don’t want the update at all.

Can’t please everyone eh, especially the extremists 😏

I hope this fixes the audio drifting issue that Ive been experiencing for a couple of months on my APP1.

Edit:
Nopeeeee still does it.
Honestly this is one thing that really bugs me about the AirPods Pro 2 as well. I love them for everything else, and ANC and sound quality is fantastic, but the audio drifting IS an issue. Even though mine are on the latest firmware. Happens mainly on voice and podcasts, and not on music. Never remember being so annoyed with it on the original APP that I had for 1.5 years. Its like the DSP is over processing the autoeq. Hope they fix it, because it ruins podcasts for me.

Crinacle pointed it out on his APP2 review as well (on YouTube)

This is why I will wait for my original APPs to die before I pick up the new ones. Had mine replaced by Apple in 2021 and the rattle has not returned. Hope they fix that.

For the first time ever I was able to update my AirPods on demand in seconds 🥳 by using this procedure:

"How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro"

Version 5B58 release notes

  • Bug fixes and other improvements

From Apple. This continues being vague and unsatisfactory.

Edit: this is the previous firmware but I expect no different for the new one.
"Bug fixes and other improvements" seems to be soup du jour across all of my expensive electronics for those that bother to post any firmware update notes. Must be some ISO standard LOL

What is the point of creating a changelog if all you write is "Bug fixes and other improvements"? Why not be transparent and let customers know exactly what you are changing in the products they have already purchased, and that you are forcing updates on. It’s kind of infuriating really…
