Everything is subject to personal taste but this was pretty darn nice. It was a 90 second film that told a story at the same time selling products.

If you didn't like it OR hated it, as i have already read the lambasting some have given it, just think of the back-to-back-to-back car dealer commercials that you get to see every commercial break.

This was well done and tasteful.

Yes, personal taste . Sweet and well done in the thoughts department, however interchangeable with many other products.
Could have ended with Grandma drinking Folgers or Maxwell house.

Only a commercial, but nothing special. Doubt that many consumers who are not digital savvy even get it.

This was a very touching ad. I love the way Apple ads show what can be done with the devices as opposed to spouting off the specs like those of the competition. In this ad the girl used several devices, iPhone, iPad and Mac showing that all three can be used together to create a beautiful audio for the grandmother. Those people that hated this ad, have absolutely no feelings whatsoever.

If I was competition (or in charge at apple) i might make an add saying you don't need 3 devices like the competion. You can use just one. Why? Cause a lot of people don't want lots of devices these days. They're trying to use just one. It's why so many love the iPhone 6+

Who says you NEED all three? They just happened to have all three so all three were highlighted in the spot to show they can all work together. sheesh.

It's just another point of view. As you say sheesh

I thought it was supposed to be an original song, you weren't supposed to relate to it directly.

-- Ahh, I somehow missed that it is "Our Love Is Here To Stay" - still, I doubt Apple expects everyone to easily recognize the song. But that isn't the point...

Maybe they should have used the song Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines (Everybody get up - hey hey hey) so that we could all recognize it and "relate" to it! /sarcasm.

Very interesting to see that commenters either loved it or hated it. The people who were touched by the message or able to try and feel what they feel loved it, while the ones who hated it seemingly just want specs or features plainly spelled out for them and don't really care for the story.

Really?

I don't know what some people want... Just a typical ad that focuses on all the details of what you get for the money? Some kind of smackdown of the competition in head to head comparisons? Nothing will do unless it's hilariously funny?

IMO, this is great, because it's an ad that gets to the whole point of what's great about buying this technology. It enables you to do things that matter!

I've been hating Apple ads lately. Just terrible...

I'd like to think it was shown that way (using all three) to display the fact that regardless of which device you are on, the same input/output is accomplished.

Yea it was. But seen from another angle it could be spun against them by a competitor or used as inspiration for another advert by apple themselves. That's the point I was trying to make.

So you'd rather pay for hardware that is not up to date, but for up to date prices based on a commercial that tugs at your heart strings?

Anything can be spun out by a competitor to show it in a different light. Apple could show just using one device to make this commercial, and an competitor could then show how all their devices integrate seamlessly (just like Apple showed in the commercial).

I don't think you necessarily need all 3. I think this can all be done with one device, if desired. In fact, this sort of music example is a great one where the user has options to use however little or many devices they want. Garageband can definitely work off of the same file on all 3 devices, and I'm pretty sure the line in input from the record can be recorded into either device as well.

It's not a "need", but more like she may have used the handoff feature and/or iCloud saves. This is sort of showing what Apple said to do at the handoff Keynote - to use the device that is right for that time. This was shown by her using her MacBook in her room, iPhone while out and about, and the iPad at the table. Clever, I thought. All 3 aren't necessary, but nice that they're integrated like this and the options are there.

EDIT: As I submitted, I see several people have already responded to you. Sorry to pile on.

How unbelievably ageist of you... you don't know but she could have worked for NASA.

It's a general advert aimed at a general product for the general population.

We can take a poll of how many old people worked for NASA if you like ;)

And, most old people I have every met, are VERY non tech minded as they grew up decades before anyone had computers, calculators etc.

I'm of course not saying all old people are like this, but, again this is supposed to be a realistic general scenario

I'm actually talking about every Apple commercial, I made that clear. I also made it clear that I was talking about targeting people who are "on the fence" not one who has already made up their mind. Sounds like you responded with an emotional knee jerk reply because you didn't like what I had to say but didn't actually read (or perhaps understand?) it.

Every Apple commercial? Including this one? Including the holiday one from last year? Including the 'my verse' commercials? Including Mac vs. PC commercials? You don't know what you're talking about.

There's a huge difference between people who are on the fence choosing between iOS and Android and those on the fence choosing between Android and another Android device.

I just find it hard to get all goofy over a 160 billion dollar company who's always in the news over tax evasion or found guilty of not living up to their warranty.

So you go into every TV ad thinking about tax reprecussions and warranty issues of the advertiser? Or is it just Apple that you target? Because I could spend my life thinking about every single advertiser and all of their financial issues but I don't take that much baggage into a 30 second spot with me.

:D This thread is so much more entertaining at Appleinsider, where response #1 was this:

Bah humbug.

Although you refer to it as a Christmas ad in the article, Apple simply says 'Happy Holidays' at the end of the ad; there is no mention of Christmas. This is the face of the new Tim Cook-led, politically correct, bland 'Think Nothing' Apple.

The ad itself? Boring and obscure. Apple are obviously trying to tailor their ads to black and white stereotypical groups; hence the recent raucous ad geared towards the thug audience, and this one geared to the old biddies.

Apple is very good at selling the fantasy that we're all talented and creative. However, the number of people who actually can / will make such a wonderful effort, is rather small.

The flip side are ads that show how a device's features can help ordinary people every day in real life situations. Like being able to ask aloud for directions. Or using a wave to change screens when fingers are messy.

--

Both ad types make sense, and of course, heart tugging ads are to be expected this time of year! :)

I actually really like the concept, but I think they missed on the execution. It wasn't all that clear to me what the granddaughter was doing (adding in her own accompaniment to the original audio) except that I'd read the description here on MR prior to seeing it. It seemed to me more like she was just listening to the old audio rather than adding to it. Maybe i needed to pay closer attention... but I don't usually pay overly close attention to ads, and I don't think most people do. It needs to grab your attention, and this one didn't.

"I dislike the song personally. Had no idea what it was and couldn't relate."

Perhaps the greatest gift this commercial could bring is if you were to take a few minutes and explore what this song is. It may not be your taste in music, but it was written by Gershwin, has been covered countless times, appeared in many films and is one of the great standards from an era of music generally regarded as the best song writing in history. Take a listen, expand your musical vocabulary. It might open your ears to other great music.

The one interesting note I have is my Mac Pro 5,1 with 32GB of RAM and an SSD, when I boot camped Windows 8.1, ended up out performing Yosemite by a lot. I think it speaks volumes. OS X is one of the best operating systems on the market but, it lacks a lot of hardware support and hardware driver/kext updates that could use the machines full potential.

And... that response is exactly what I am talking about... I may understand your TechBabble but 90% of people don't and really don't care.

"It works and doesn't crash constantly. I am happy"

However in response. I have seen ~10% better windows performance in a few tasks / apps ike C4d and after effects... BUT and it a BIG BIG BUT... windows 8 itself is horrible to use and crashes. OSX really doesn't for me.

Keep digging buddy. I am sadly shaking my head at you.
