Prepare for a new iPod coming out soon after the progamme...

Or maybe sooner, see below from last years UK FAQ, so apple doesn't necessarily have to wait to release a new iPod:

Are the iPod Nano units released September 12th eligible for the offer?

No. The previous iPod Nano selection is still available to order from the Apple Online Education store. See the eligible product matrix for a complete list of qualifying Mac and iPod units.

Nice updates. Its going to be great to get off my g4 powerbook. But then again, with the 4 new 8 core mac pros I have with 16 GB of ram, the macbook pro might seem slow:) Here are the specs:

15 inch 2.4 Ghz
4 GB RAM
160 GB Hard Drive @ 7200 RPM
Apple care
Glossy Screen
Price with apple care and mag safe (using my discount): $3001.00

I also ordered an extra power adaptor. I have a couple of questions:

1) This is the LED display right?
2) I use a privacy filter on my g4 but I dont think it will fit the MBP, anyone tried? How is it with the glossy screen? I figured I would have the filter on 90% of the time and then take it off when I needed to watch a movie or something.
3) 4-6 weeks? Whats the hold up? Shortage on 7200 rpm drives?

Also, the new MBPs will NOT be in the stores today. Called two stores including 5th ave and they said they dont have anything yet. Not for a couple of days.

No, unfortunately no. I wouldn't mind if dvi + audio to HDMI wasn't so @#$% expensive (hundreds of dollars for an adapter that just puts audio and dvi into one cable of the same standard??? WHY?!?!?)

You're clearly shopping at the wrong places. (Hint: there's no such thing as Monsters).

HDMI cables are cheap at www.monoprice.com. They work just fine.

As for the MBP, I'm seriously considering it, but I will wait a few weeks to see what's announced at WWDC, and I more than likely will wait until they ship with Leopard. Either that or buy a refurb C2D. My preschool-age (4 years old!) 12" PB can hang on just a little bit longer...

64-bit editions should have no problems, but a 32-bit OS might hit a snag or two. For instance, putting 4GB in XP* is nice, but XP still won't assign more than 2GB of RAM to a single application, so the boot.ini file has to be modified to look something like this

Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional [B]with 3GB switch[/B]" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect [B]/3GB[/B]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The /3GB switch tells XP it's ok to let an application have more RAM (up to 3GB).

*XP only shows 3.25 GB of RAM (but it is there)

This is what I'm afraid of.... If I install 4 GB of RAM, I'm afraid I might run into trouble when I try running XP/Vista 32-bit version.

If it was a strong update Steve would have done it himself next week. This is about as incremental as you get. Sure, it has the next gen mobo, but in this case the next gen isn't all that much better than the previous gen.
Apple chooses the release dates for a number of factors. A drawback of relying on Mr J to announce products is that people hold off buying machines when they know/think he’s going to do a keynote; if you can keep a customer guessing when a product is going to be updated, they’re less likely to wait for keynotes which helps a more consistent rate of sales over the year.

Also, a few years ago, when Steve gave a keynote but didn’t announce anything that was considered major (remember the funny-coloured iMacs in Japan) people get waaaaay disappointed – not just the fanboys, but analysts too – sometimes this caused a blip in the share price.

Are you taking VAT in to account? European prices include VAT; US-prices do not.

This I didn't know! Thanks!

If you look around you can fly to New York, buy one there, fly home again and still be cheaper than the UK store. Oh and you'll get it quicker that way too...

Was thinking of this, but not sure if its worth it as the US prices don't include VAT. I'd have to cope with the wrong keyboard! ;)

2) buy an edu discounted model. No idea how much cheper - that's secret!

Yeah those are the EDU prices I put in my original post, the EDU HE pricing in the uk is basically UK VAT free (-17.5%).

Thanks to all who gave their 2¢ on this one!

I think this is all a sham. They pulled the same crap last summer with the Core Duo's. They introduced the new Core Duo last year... with a the FREE IPOD NANO!!! Oh yeah, three months later they had the "Core 2 Duo" with improved motherboards... Okay? Anybody see a pattern? They wait for college kids to take their old inventory and sweeten it by offering an iPod nano. Think about it, they upgraded the MacBook Pro's and MacBook's with "faster chips". No real structural improvement. I don't even think it is Santa Rosa!

Clear old stock on what the newest Intel processors which they are? Sure....

I am switching my business to Mac's. I will be purchasing a combination of 27 desktops and laptops (plus server).
If I keep waiting, I will be waiting forever....

Do you agree now is the time? This is a huge investment for me :)
Mac-books - just updated
Mac-book Pro's - just updated
The lack of LED back-lit display does not bother me. Wouldn't order the first one's out anyway as Mac's have had their share of problems with display's...

If I see new iMacs at WWDC07 this is finally a done deal!

Any reason of switching to Macs? Many businesses are now in the process of going back to PCs because the reliability, speed and cost are much better now.

If you are buying Macs, now is the time for the MBs and MBPs, the iMacs may have an update but not for a few months I'd say. Who knows though. :p

Also, just spoke to the Apple sales department.. - they said the 15" models don't have LED displays.

Correct. I am in Apple Chat right now talking about this very subject. Unfortunatly, they won't know about a 17" LED until the day it is released. :(

even if it's opened? the receipt seems to indicate i'd get charged a 10% fee. i'm going to call and see if they even have the new models at the store yet and if i can exchange it when they open.

I've never been asked to pay a restocking fee when this happens to me but thats in the UK store though....they're somewhat lenient. Just repackage it as much as possible and politely ask for an exchange or return it saying you changed your mind and want to buy something else.

So, it's the 800Mhz FSB, so why bother speccing up to 4Gb from Apple. Just take the 2Gb standard, then upgrade to 4Gb 800Mhz RAM from another supplier

With what? The Sims? WoW? A Mac is not a gaming machine. Unless they run well in bootcamp? Never used a Mac for PC games before.

A Mac running Windows IS a decent gaming machine. I've played Oblivion at high settings on a first-gen MBP getting around 30 fps. Plus DirectX 10 should help a lot. If this new update to Parallels is as promising as it seems, I may never need to boot into Windows to play games ever again!

This is what I'm afraid of.... If I install 4 GB of RAM, I'm afraid I might run into trouble when I try running XP/Vista 32-bit version.

There's really not a problem, it takes a few seconds to edit the file plus a reboot into XP.

You don't have to type all of that code, but I posted all of it anyway. You just add " /3GB" to the end of the Windows installation

Code:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect [B]/3GB[/B]

And that's it really. The extra line is just another boot option if I don't want to boot with the 3GB switch enabled. You don't have to have it there if everything works fine.

It's definitely Santa Rosa. The GPU and CPU are basically the best ones you could get at this point.

EDIT: Interesting: The MacBooks have better Superdrives than MBP's do.
How do you figure thus:

Optical drive3 24x Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

First row is Basic MacBook. Second is Upgraded Macbook. Last is MacBook Pro. Looks the same to me.

The more memory your computer has, the more programs you can run simultaneously, and the better performance you get from your computer. Increasing the amount of memory in your MacBook Pro is an easy way to improve performance.

How much memory is right for you?

Choose the standard 2GB of memory to support day-to-day tasks such as email, word processing, and web browsing as well as more complex tasks such as editing photos, creating illustrations, and building complex presentations

Max out your MacBook Pro with the 4GB option to enjoy the greatest possible performance for all your computing tasks.

The MacBook Pro uses one of the fastest memory technologies available today —667MHz, Double Data Rate (DDR2), synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) — ensuring that the Core 2 Duo processor is constantly fed with data without wasting clock cycles.

No mention whatsoever of the 800Mhz FSB........
