I wonder if the 4GB option will be supported when running XP/Vista in Bootcamp though... I dont know if the Physical Address Extension(PAE) thing is a problem. usually when you want to use 4 GB in a PC laptop, you have to add a premium price, like $1500 ish. However, we only need to add $750 here. Any comments or insight would be greatly appreciated.

64-bit editions should have no problems, but a 32-bit OS might hit a snag or two. For instance, putting 4GB in XP* is nice, but XP still won't assign more than 2GB of RAM to a single application, so the boot.ini file has to be modified to look something like this

Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional [B]with 3GB switch[/B]" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect [B]/3GB[/B]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The /3GB switch tells XP it's ok to let an application have more RAM (up to 3GB).

*XP only shows 3.25 GB of RAM (but it is there)

Has anyone else noticed that if you choose the glossy display that it subtracts $150? (I just got to work and haven't had a chance to catch up on this thread).

Sorry, I should have said, on the high-end 15". I haven't checked the others.

Edit: Okay, I see this glitch is only on the ordering page and will correct itself once everything is the cart. Bummer :p

I agree

If it was a strong update Steve would have done it himself next week. This is about as incremental as you get. Sure, it has the next gen mobo, but in this case the next gen isn't all that much better than the previous gen.

This is not much of an upgrade, only a tad better, I have the last MBP and 2.16 is plenty fast. I have tried the Sony Santa Rosa and it is not any faster.

Until the next update.........

Here's your Bozo button...

Ordering 15" MBP today (likely 2.4)

A couple questions:

1. Any comments on glossy v matte?

2. Anyone know if in stock at NYC Apple store?

3. When at home, I plan to sometimes connect to a external TV/monitor (Sharp 32GPU1, 1920 x 1080)... does anyone have advice whether this is compatable with it and whether the 256 VRAM is needed over the 128.

Thanks!

anyway, this update is nice but not revolutionary.
now i have the coice between
a MB 2GB 120GB + ipod for ~$1300 (edu)
a MBP 2GB 120GB + ipod for ~$1800 (edu)

i wonder if the screen and the GPU are worth the $500 to me...............

If it's an help it would be to me. iIf for no other reason than just the longevity of the machine. the GPU is a HUGE difference in the MP and MBP. plus as a student the MBP is super nice, I (And my wife) love the backlit keyboard at night. and I just like the feel of the MBP. Spend the 500.00 you won't be sorry.

As a side note, some schools if you are in certain programs have discounts that are better than the Apple store, you might check with your school's bookstore (I'm a Digital Media major and we get a few extra bucks off the price)

Waited so long
so many promises around the santa rosa platform and none of them included here.

Besides the high resolution option everything else is just not worth it.
Led display shaved .02 of the thickness is not something worth wetting your pants over.

the santa rosa platform is this overhyped platform with many great possiblities but fail to really deliver. I guess everything santa rosa was supopsed to be will be in the next updated hardware refresh.

October i am looking at you.

Comparing to whats out there this update is wot worth 2500+.

I've seen a couple people ask about the apple retail stores, but no answer really(maybe I just missed it). I just called my local one that's about 5 min from my house and they do have them in stock. I'm going to go pick one up now(they open in 19 minutes) and also get the nano and printer.

128 to 256?

So, how much gaming performance does going from 128 to 256 on the video card give you?

I plan on running Bootcamp/Vista...

It is a $500 price differnece and I don't think the .2ghz processor and 40GB HD are worth it... But if the video card really siginificantly helps games, I may consider it...

figures since i finally gave in and bought a mbp on sunday.

even if it's opened? the receipt seems to indicate i'd get charged a 10% fee. i'm going to call and see if they even have the new models at the store yet and if i can exchange it when they open.

Just curious, why would you buy on Sunday when you, a reader of Macrumors, likely knew that something was coming Tuesday?

Now is the time

I am switching my business to Mac's. I will be purchasing a combination of 27 desktops and laptops (plus server).
If I keep waiting, I will be waiting forever....

Do you agree now is the time? This is a huge investment for me :)
Mac-books - just updated
Mac-book Pro's - just updated
The lack of LED back-lit display does not bother me. Wouldn't order the first one's out anyway as Mac's have had their share of problems with display's...

If I see new iMacs at WWDC07 this is finally a done deal!
