It does have it, but until Quicktime is updated to use it, it won't matter...

Yeah, but ask just about anyone here, and they'll suggest either VLC or MPlayer. :)

FJR1300, Santa Rosa really isn't a marketing term, and looking at Apple's website, you can see why the wouldn't use it. But the 800MHz Front side bus coupled with the 2.2 and 2.4 GHz processors, coupled with the new max RAM of 4GB are all results of the new chipset (Santa Rosa)

I'm just curious to see whether either of these new screens (15-in LED and 17-in HD) are an improvement over the less-than-acceptable screens that plagued the previous iteration of the MBP.

Me ship has come in! This had everything I was looking and hopeing for in an update. I'm glad they didn't change the case design - I've been wanting one of these for a long time and I like them the way the way there are.

Goodbye Thinkpad, goodbye Dell. I won't totally say goodbye to Windows and Kubuntu... I'll still run you both under Parallels. :)

Since the FSB is 800 MHz, do you think that the new line can handle the DDR2-800 memory? If so, why not take the default memory and buy 4 GB of it from crucial?

Well they seem like some pretty solid updates esp the RAM - although you will prob need that to run Leopard smoothly.

It's a shame they aren't starting to build blu ray or HD drives in to the MBP, even as an extra option?

Case Design

But why? You can see something is a MBP from a mile away, it's so iconic. What's wrong with it that it needs to be changed? Change for change's sake?

I just don't think it's a very good design, I'm still on my titanium PowerBook, which in my opinion looks far better then the current MacBook Pro...also the MacBooks look much more stylish then the Pro.

7200 rpm shipping delay

I'm a little bummed that adding the 7200rpm hard drive to the high end 15inch model causes the shipping time to go from 1-3 days to 4-6 weeks.

I guess I'll just keep waiting...

Anyone notice that if you upgrade to the 160GB 7200rpm HDD, the ship time goes from 1-3 days to 4-6 weeks. Sheesh.
That might be an indication of how many people have ordered the new MacBook Pro with the 160GB 7200rpm HDD. :)

I wonder how may of these new models will be making their way to WWDC next week.

how can that be, it's all over their website.
From web "Display’s the thing
A great video processor powers a great display. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional 1920-by-1200 pixel display."

Can someone show me where it says the new MBP uses the Santa Rosa chipset?

Thanks..

Santa Rosa was a code name used by Intel. It's not going to say it anywhere on Apple's site. You can tell by the 800Mhz frontside bus as well as the chip speeds...both of which are only available on the Santa Rosa platform.

[edit] Oh, and it supports 4 gigs of RAM which only Santa Rosa can do since it's now a true 64 bit motherboard.

I very much doubt that you'll need more than a gig to run leopard smoothly. Apple's OS's get successive faster and more streamlined, much more so than a certain competitor I know of.

2gb ram!

ok, so let me get this straight... I'm looking to buy a mac pro..

macbook pro (standard of 2gb ram)

mac pro (apples WORKSTATION) (standard 1gb ram)

uhhhhhh.....

4 Gigs o' RAM

OK so the new MBP's are out. Whoopee and all that but i noticed that the max RAM limit now is 4GB. Now, is there any reason why I can't stick dual 2GB sticks into my previous generation C2D MBP?

They may after Loapard comes out. But until then it won't be of much use.

Nope Santa Rosa (Platform) doesn't do 800 on memory (without overclocking which I have never seen done on EFI). It will fall back to the 667 speed. The next refresh from Intel will either go with that speed or go DDR-3.

I can't understand why people are fed up by this update...

Come on guys!

You asked for Santa Rosa, they delivered. You asked for LED screens, we got it. The X1600 was outdated, here comes 8600M GT. Plus, we got 2GB of RAM for all models.

That is a GREAT update.

Ya that's great. Except I'm waiting for them to re-re-design it so the display tilts back to the same angle as the Powerbook days. Maybe they changed that with these new ones. We'll see.

Ah! I forgot about the lid angle issue! It was a big deal to us. I pray they fixed it so it tilts back like the Macbook. I wish there was a way to find out cuz this is a deal-breaker.

Negative. I ordered literally the second the shop came online, and I also have the 3-4 week delay. I guess they are low on stock, or waiting for stock.

I think this is all a sham. They pulled the same crap last summer with the Core Duo's. They introduced the new Core Duo last year... with a the FREE IPOD NANO!!! Oh yeah, three months later they had the "Core 2 Duo" with improved motherboards... Okay? Anybody see a pattern? They wait for college kids to take their old inventory and sweeten it by offering an iPod nano. Think about it, they upgraded the MacBook Pro's and MacBook's with "faster chips". No real structural improvement. I don't even think it is Santa Rosa!

It HAS to be Santa Rosa. 2.2 and 2.4 Ghz chips are part of Santa Rosa.

The new MBP have a different chipset to your MBP. You could stick 4Gb Ram in yours but IIRC you will only see about 3.3Gb due to the chipset in there.

LED-backlit displays ONLY IN THE US ....check the Apple UK site (or any other European Apple Site) and you will find no mentioning of LED Displays...sucks
