WTF?

I seriously can't understand people, what were you waiting for?

It's a great update in the current line up and people still complain, always and always.

Everyone wanted Santa Rosa (check), Ram upgrade (check), LED screens (check), faster processor (check), better GPU (check) ... with all this, how can it be that people are still complaining?

I will probably be getting this, but I was shooting for a case redesign. Oh well, can't wait forever... :(

LaKeisha: One moment while I research that for you.

You: Thank you.

You: I could not locate this spec on your website.

LaKeisha: What is Nand?
*

You: NAND flash-memory caching branded as Turbo Memory (code-named Robson)
*

You: If apple has upgraded the chip set to "Santa Rosa".
*

LaKeisha: Okay.
*

LaKeisha: We don't have the chip name. Only the speed.

You: Do you know what version of the Intel processor is running on the current Macbook Pros?
*

LaKeisha: Intel Core 2 Duo.

B. Why there is no HDMI output:

Answer: Because it could be to the detriment of AppleTV sales.
I also think it is due to HDMI's inability to run Dual Link DVI displays (IE the Apple Cinema 30"). Shoot for that matter how does one DVI plug run a Dual Link display?

How are you sure about this?

http://www.apple.com/uk/pr/050607_mbp.html

It only lists LED screens in the press release -- there is no place (that I've seen so far) on the US site that states LED screens (not in the Store or in the product overview pages).

Display’s the thing
A great video processor powers a great display. The new MacBook Pro is available in 15-inch models with a new mercury-free, power-efficient LED-backlit display and a 17-inch model with an optional 1920-by-1200 pixel display.

Off the info page of the US store.

Well, I'm not going to read through 15 pages to see if its been said, so I will sayit anyway.

Price cuts on UK models

15" £1349 - £1299

15" 2.4 £1699 - £1599

17" £1899 - £1799

Only £50-£100 off, but hey... means the prices are coming down in general so we arent paying as much as a premium as our American friends :)

I have to say, I do like this update, and I'm tempted to get one. However, Penryn will make SR really fly and I'm not due to update until next summer... Hopefully, more price cuts by then!

A. To summarize the most reasonable possible complaints about this otherwise fine upgrade:

-- No Robson (flash) cache
-- No High Definition on 15" models
-- No LED on 17" models

B. Why there is no HDMI output:

Answer: Because it could be to the detriment of AppleTV sales.

C. Multi-touch and Leopard

After these last two laptop updates (MB and MBP), with no touch screens anywhere in the spectrum, we can reasonably expect that multi-touch will not be a top-secret feature of Leopard.

Another person passing along WRONG info.

ALL models got the LED display, 15 and 17", glossy AND matte. This is according to the press release and can be verified on Apple's US site if you click the MBP on the main apple page and read all the new info.

Why would you think the people answering the phone would know this stuff?

oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy!

I'm finally *almost* at the point of finally buying my first Mac. A new Mac will be purchased within the next week or so... RIGHT AFTER hearing what goes down at WWDC. I'd be kicking my own ass if they came out with a "one more thing" surprise ultra portable laptop, although I know the focus is supposed to be desktops. If they update the Mac mini (and don't discontinue it *fingers crossed*) I'll be making two purchases in a week and I'll have a nice new media center! In addition, my wife just started nursing school so hello free iPod nano and $1,799 15" MBP!

One or two questions...
1. Are the new Macbook Pro's in stock right now in the Apple stores? I'm a 15 minute walk from the 5th avenue store
2. Glossy vs Matte screen? Better graphics vs no glare. Do you think the difference in type of display could be more/less dramatic now that they're LED?
3. Does 128MB vs 256MB of video memory make that much of a difference? I don't care about the speed differential or the HD space, but may care about this if there's a drastic difference

Ummm got shot down twice. The first time he was pretty sympathetic but was like I cant do much. Call Service. I did.... didnt work. I'm thinking of going down to the Apple Store and showing them my printed PDF of my order. Since I'm in Quebec I'm sure the guy will just be like... ahh... je n'ai comprende pas..... but can I get the price.... MAIS, ouuuuiiiII.

not that the law seems to matter much these days, but aren't they required by law to honor their pricing mistakes.

someone's getting fired today, and it's an IT guy.

anyway if that works, even though i have the 2.33, that price with a student discount, the extra $135 off and the free nano, makes if VERY tempting to upgrade.

No, YOU need more video RAM.

If you need 256, get the better model.
Wow $500 for that bump. I'll keep using my craptastic Latitude D800 and wait for a refurbished model. What is this 2004? What's the price of some video RAM for a mainstream card?

I am sorry, I was referring to the overclocking of the processor (the X7900 runs at 2.8). We all know the other processors are super overclock happy, but I have only ever seen it done with BIOS, not EFI.
You'd be able to boost the front side bus on a desktop board that takes Socket M/P processors.

Otherwise you're limited to the 7600G or X7xxx series for mobile overclocking. Not that you can't hack the EFI to do it...

Incorrect, the Press Release states only the 15" got the LED's.

ok, so let me get this straight... I'm looking to buy a mac pro..

macbook pro (standard of 2gb ram)

mac pro (apples WORKSTATION) (standard 1gb ram)

uhhhhhh.....

We'll see MacPro updates before too long ... probably w/o much fanfare, but it will happen (at least when it comes to standard RAM)

Ahh, this is helpful. So, in that I might use up to, say, 50% of a 160GB HD, don't you think it would be wise for me to save the $150 and get the 5,400 rpm version? Especially because 5400rpm is the default config, so I can drive up to NH and get it tax-free. So essentially I'd be saving about $250, because I'm not paying over $100 in tax from the online store, and I'm not paying for the $150 upgrade to 7,200 rpm. Is that a good idea?
No you would be still much faster at 7200 RPM. Same size, its always faster with the faster RPM.

And still 50% isn't very full. Only past the 3/4 mark do you really notice a difference.

Ironic, but the 17" doesn't have an LED display.

That's not how I read it buddy, nor is it what I heard from Apple when I called them a little bit ago.

3. Does the 128MG of video memory make that much of a difference?

No. Those that really need it will know why and can explain it in high detail. If you can't, it's more than you need... Don't listen to the "more is better" crowd - they're not always right...

Nope, just the 15"

More than beautiful

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro is better for the environment, thanks to its new mercury-free display. Backlit by light emitting diodes (LEDs), the display weighs less and is more power efficient than the cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) which most notebooks employ, and provides full brightness immediately after the system is turned on.
(Emphasis mine).

Oh wow sweet, I posted here earlier on the 1st page hoping the 17" would get 1920 x 1200 Resolution and my wish came true, haha :D

So far the update was everything predicted on AI, now all I have to do is save up for one :(
