OK so the new MBP's are out. Whoopee and all that but i noticed that the max RAM limit now is 4GB. Now, is there any reason why I can't stick dual 2GB sticks into my previous generation C2D MBP?

Because last version didnt have Santa Rosa and it didnt support it.

I believe the 2,2Ghz processor is a Santa Rosa part as a) There isn't a 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo as far as I know and b) the build-to-order options in the Mac store list memory options of 2Gb and 4Gb for all of the new Macbook Pro models, including the 2.2Ghz model. Oh, and C) we've already seen 2.2Ghz Santa Rosa CPU's in other laptops such as the Samsung SENS P55

The processor has nothing to do with Santa Rosa at all. It is absolutely the same processor.

The old MBPs had a motherboard running at 166 MHz, with the frontside bus running at 4 x motherboard speed = 666 MHz. The processor _must_ be some multiple of the motherboard speed, either 12 x 166 MHz = 2 GHz, or 13 x 166 MHz = 2.16 GHz, or 14 x 166 MHz = 2.33 GHz.

The new MBPs have a motherboard running at 200 MHz, with the frontside bus running at 4 x motherboard speed = 800 MHz. The processor _must_ be some multiple of the motherboard speed, so it cannot possibly run at 2.16 or 2.33 GHz. They run at 11 x 200 MHz = 2.2 GHz or 12 x 200 MHz = 2.4 GHz.

It is the same processor, except that Intel has tested them at 2.2 and 2.4 GHz - the old ones may have been tested at that speed as well.

That would be true if it was the same technology. But it isn't. Benchmarks show that the 4200 RPM drives are actually faster once the drive gets full.

Actually, the benchmark quoted earlier showed that a "slower" 160GB disk (filled with 80GB) was faster than a 7200rpm 100GB disk (filled with 80GB).

If both disks were "almost full" the result would be different. We need to read a different benchmark to know that result. Personally, my hard disks are always "almost full".

Note: all the above assumes same technology. 5400 & 7200 are same technology. Others are talking about 4200rpm using perpendicular technology which has higher density... so all bets are off :) get a different benchmark!

Santa Rosa was a code name used by Intel. It's not going to say it anywhere on Apple's site. You can tell by the 800Mhz frontside bus as well as the chip speeds...both of which are only available on the Santa Rosa platform.

[edit] Oh, and it supports 4 gigs of RAM which only Santa Rosa can do since it's now a true 64 bit motherboard.

Ahhh, good point! Thanks for that! :D

Looks like a great update for those waiting. I was clicking around on the different prices and on a 17" with the HD it only changed by $2. Either something is wrong or apple is passing some good savings to people right now. I even did it on the macbook mid range, changed to 2GB ram and added 20 bucks. Order now!:D

I'm just curious to see whether either of these new screens (15-in LED and 17-in HD) are an improvement over the less-than-acceptable screens that plagued the previous iteration of the MBP.

I can't imagine how the can NOT be! I mean, the displays we have now are pretty poor, especially because they are unevenly lit and have graininess. If the unevenness is fixed I'll be very happy. I think the display will come from a different manufacturer too and hopefully the grain will be gone too! Finally.

You can stick 2 2GB sticks in, but only 3GB will be recognized. It has to do with the chipset. The new MacBook Pros that were released today feature the Santa Rosa chipset which recognizes 4 GB of RAM.

Yeah, but ask just about anyone here, and they'll suggest either VLC or MPlayer. :)

The first one to to take advantage of the acceleration for playback gets a big cookie. As far as acceleration for encoding, until Quicktime itself does it I doubt any of the Handbrake-type apps will either...

These new MacBook Pro are awesome. Great CPU, latest GPU, new displays.

I wish I had more money so that I could get the upgraded 15"

I just don't think it's a very good design, I'm still on my titanium PowerBook, which in my opinion looks far better then the current MacBook Pro...also the MacBooks look much more stylish then the Pro.

The titanum was an amazing design heck dell still copies that design in its inspiron line and i like that the LCD recedes all the way back but it wasn't perfect...paint flakes, hinge breakage and all that.

I agree though.....current case needs a redesign, as do the iMacs and Mac Pros

A. To summarize the most reasonable possible complaints about this otherwise fine upgrade:

-- No Robson (flash) cache
-- No High Definition on 15" models
-- No LED on 17" models

B. Why there is no HDMI output:

Answer: Because it could be to the detriment of AppleTV sales.

C. Multi-touch and Leopard

After these last two laptop updates (MB and MBP), with no touch screens anywhere in the spectrum, we can reasonably expect that multi-touch will not be a top-secret feature of Leopard.

...Apple's OS's get successive faster and more streamlined, much more so than a certain competitor I know of.

That's true. My 3.6year-old PBG4 is running Tiger so smoothly I can't believe that happens in the other world that we know of.

For example, Core animation will allow to use less lines of code for a task. I presume that that will lead to less processes. I am not a developer though.

LED-backlit displays ONLY IN THE US ....check the Apple UK site (or any other European Apple Site) and you will find no mentioning of LED Displays...sucks

WTF. Wait, the US store doesn't mention them either. Please, this can't be true...

Keep us posted chef. I was going to do the same thing.

Let me know if that works, i'm interested.

anyone see apples benchmarks for the upgrade? Deceptively comparing it to the core duo model not the core 2 duo model

Ummm got shot down twice. The first time he was pretty sympathetic but was like I cant do much. Call Service. I did.... didnt work. I'm thinking of going down to the Apple Store and showing them my printed PDF of my order. Since I'm in Quebec I'm sure the guy will just be like... ahh... je n'ai comprende pas..... but can I get the price.... MAIS, ouuuuiiiII.

Eh.... not much of an improvement.. too bad Apple.. :apple:

WTF?

I seriously can't understand people, what were you waiting for?

It's a great update in the current line up and people still complain, always and always.

Everyone wanted Santa Rosa (check), Ram upgrade (check), LED screens (check), faster processor (check), better GPU (check) ... with all this, how can it be that people are still complaining?

don't worry!!! look at the mbps in the store - they are the new mbps - the 17" model has the option to update the display to the new resolution. The mbps in the store have LEDs, but the idiots at apple havn't updated the hardware pages yet...if you look, it still says they have 2.16 or 2.33ghz processors.
store has been updated, hardware pages have not

So, how long before these show up on Amazon ? I'd love to use my Prime shipping for one of these :)

No shipping + No Sales Tax + Rebate

When they upgraded the Macbooks a few weeks ago, weren't they available on Amazon almost immediately?
