Where are you getting this from?

Does anyone else think the pictures they're putting on the MBP screens on apple.com are absolutely hideous and very un-:apple: ?

EDIT: Ah, thanks for the explanation. 6 hours of battery life? Now that IS exciting. Pictures on apple.com, still hideously ugly.

I agree, those pics make the MBPs come across as Windows machines. Strange
LED would have been nice in the 17" models - perhaps the technology hasn't evolved to power a 17" screen yet. At 1920-by-1200 resolution though, I ain't complaining :)

Which Hard Drive is worth it?!?

I was comparing the MBP 200Gb 4200 rpm HDD to my PB's 80Gb 5400 rpm HDD and really expected something on par with what I currently have in terms of speed. Of course mine is a Ultra DMA and current drives are SATA, so does that make rpm really irrelevant?

The 160Gb 7200 rpm would be awesome but I don't have 4-6 weeks to wait around for.

Seems like you can't have compacity and speed in the same package.:(

Let's take a stroll down Reality Street...

Currently, a 32GB SSD drive costs about $500. In 6 months, you might be able to buy a 64GB for ~$500.

Meanwhile, a 1GB Robson cache costs about $50. In terms of performance bang per buck Robson is the winner (by far.)

This is perhaps why the hybrid drive approach (which is different to the above two) is maybe the way to go?

Memory drops at an alarming rate. It's more or less the same price for 2GB sticks as it was for 1GB sticks 4 months ago (in the UK). That's amazing and it shows that it's possible flash memory might drop to affordable levels soon (esp if the buying power of Apple is brought into the equation).

TO THE PEOPLE WHO JUST WENT TO THE STORE TO GET THEIRS:

We want pics and benchmarks!

I dont think Hybrid drives work on Macs.... I may stand corrected though. Last time I checked only Vista supports its features, no? Or do I have this completely wrong.

When did you bring up any reason why 256 is absolutely neccessary for everyone? Just a couple reasons why 256 is at all needed for almost all tasks. Will the 256MB really decrease your work time? If so then upgrade, if not. The you dont need it.
128 MB of video RAM hasn't been top of the line since before 2005. The MacBook Pro is supposed to be a mobile version of the Mac Pro. A CTO option would have been just fine but spending $500 for minimal upgrades isn't worth it.

Every example of watching and encoding video that you presented was entirely CPU bound.

Switch!

I just bought my 2,2 GHz 15,4" MBP with a glossy screen (to see my photographs at their best). I'm really excited since this is my first :apple: computer. Goodbye PC Guy!

Great specs, everything I hoped for and it will be arriving in little over a week. Super!

First, I'm pretty sure those numbers aren't correct, or weren't run properly. Benchmarking NVidia cards has been tough because of Vista driver issues.

Having said that, The 8600MGT can do better than that:

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3728&review=Asus+G1S

In that one, for example, it gets 3816, and I've seen it even closer to 4000 in some tests.

Secondly, I am not so sure about whether the HD2600 XT could even work properly in the MBP...... the only "laptop" I've even seen that features it right now is that crazy 20" HP thing.

Here is what I have found out. In Southern NJ and SE PA, the new 15" MBPs are available in store today. The 17" MBPs are not available, but should be in by the end of the week. The high resolution display will NOT be available in the brick and mortar stores and can only be ordered online.

I have called three local Apple Stores and they have all given me the exact same information.

Hickman

Many thanks for the update! Had a feeling you'd have to order them.
Now the question is do I?! hmmmm
Just bought a MBP in February.... me thinkith ebayith!

Congratulations! I switched a little over a year ago and never looked back. Macs are indeed addicting. :)

But then we wouldn't have got the HD2600XT (mobile) because it is aimed at desktop replacement type notebooks, e.g. those massive Dell gaming laptops. Should be comparing the HD2600 (mobile) to G8600GT Go.

No benchmarks for the non-XT version so I had to go with what is out there. A non-issue anyways as Apple has made their choice. Probably not much difference between the two in the end. At least the new card is nearly twice as fast as the X1600.

Man, you miss a couple hours and the thread is out of control...

3 reasons why I love this udate:

1. Great specs! I like the 2GB RAM in all models, the graphics card, the LED display in the 15", and the upgrade display for the 17".

2. As nice as this upgrade is, it doesn't make me regret my current C2D 17". At all. I'd love the new machine, but mine still kicks all sorts of ass.

3. Releasing them now means no MBP updates at WWDC. Which makes it that much more likely that the iMac line will be updated. Here's to hoping, anyway. I'm itching for a new 24"... (That's what she said...)

Cheers Apple!

Magnetic Latch

Still no reason to mess with perfection I say. The one thing I could go for is a purely magnetic latch.

While their latch is ok, I agree this is an area where they could innovate like they did with magsafe. I liked the concept in the old clamshell iBooks that had no latch.

I'm pretty sure that's it; this MBP is the first 15" laptop even with an LED-backlit display; to date this tech has only been seen on smaller 11 and 13" displays.

Guys! There's a glitch on the Apple Store. If you go to the 15" MacBook Pro and add the modem, the price drops to $1,898! If you get away with the purchase, legally, apple must sell it to you for that amount.

Buy up now!!!

Nevermind, it changes it back at checkout.

Mercury

Oddly, the sticker that you break when you open the paper cover for the first time says the screen contains mercury and should be disposed of properly. I thought the LED screens didn't contain any?

These must be standard stickers which Apple decided to use up. Very misleading:confused:

I am ready to upgrade to the new MBP, but would appreciate some advice from anyone who is more knowledgable on the subject than I...

I am in the design profession, and will be doing alot of heavy photo editing/rendering within Photoshop as well as other general design work with Adobe CS3, as well as working in programs such as Archicad within OSX. I will also be running Windows/bootcamp to run Autodesk architectural software. While basic AutoCAD is not an issue at all, I will be running heavier 3D rendering software such as Revit, but more importantly VIZ and Maya, and so I will need as much speed as I can afford.

My question is whether it is better to go with the 2.2 GHz Processor with an upgrade to 4gb of memory, or go with the 2.4 GHz Processor and stay with the 2gb of memory... Those two combinations are roughly comparable in price. Thanks in advance for any input!

Do your 3yrs older self a favor and buy the top line with the bigger graphics card. use the machine with 2gig of ram and see if it cuts it. Spend $250 on non-oem 4gig of ram from a retailer online in a week or a year to make the machine an "ultimate". If you pass on the 256mb of video ram now, you can NOT add it later. RAM is always user replaceable.

Which is the better screen glossy or the other one iam new to the mac world any help would be great thanks.

I did it---I bought the 2499 Model. It also came with a free iPod and a free printer which is nice. I am SO STOKED about getting it---it should be here by the 8th. I also got the glossy screen---what do you guys think about glossy?
