The upgrades were good and everything but i am disappointed a bit by there not being a 12/13inch MBP. I was hoping that one would be released. I doubt now that Apple will ever release a smaller factor MBP notebook.
I have had a 15 inch MBP and i don't really want one that size again. I also do not want a MacBook.
I guess that i will just keep onto my iBook for a good while longer now.

P.S. Robson Cache/Turbo Memory is a scam IMO. You're not missing anything.

You remind me of the old guys in the '90s that claimed that putting greater than 100KB of cache on a hard drive was a "ripoff" and really just an effort by the manufacturers to raise the cost of hard drives.

Guess what? They were wrong. (As are you.) :p

I agree, there's plenty of scope for the shrinking of the bezel size and making the machine thinner too.

I'm sure it is possible for them to make a smaller/thinner MacBook Pro with those Intel chips. It was the purpose of the switch to Intel.

I'm typing on a 12 inch G4 PowerBook and I know if Apple can update it to Intel and make it thinner and put in LED, this will with no doubt be one of Apple's most successful laptops. Imagine the battery life!

I get 5 hours on this laptop, now imagine with the intel chips!

If it happens mine will be going straight back to apple and traded for the new one.....as will many thousands of others. They really wont do it. Your in the same city as me i bet my new MBP on it ;)

As it happens I too think the likelyhood is low. The demand is very high though.

My realistic side thinks September as a target for this machine.

Finally, a laptop configuration from Apple that I won't need to add anything to for it to be useful to me. Of course, I'm not quite ready to upgrade from my Powerbook yet.

The only question is to go with the default disk, or upgrade to the 7200 RPM disk. As for the model, it would be the faster 15" plus Applecare. Of course by the time I buy, the question(s) of what to order will have most likely changed.

I'm personally unaware of how to swap out a mbp disk, but assuming the user can do it at all, I'd wait about 6 months and replace it myself. Laptop disks are increasing in size and speed dramatically right now and you wouldn't want to overpay Apple for an upgrade that won't be so hot sooner than you think...

No you would be still much faster at 7200 RPM. Same size, its always faster with the faster RPM.

And still 50% isn't very full. Only past the 3/4 mark do you really notice a difference.

It isn't faster because the data density is lower, so even though the platter rotates quicker, the 7200 RPM disks read fewer bytes per round.

And the speed decrease when the disk gets full is continuous from an empty disk to a full disk. Both a large disk and a smaller disk get slower as they are filled; the larger disk will have less percent used and therefore will suffer less from the slow down compared to the smaller disk when the same number of GB are used.

But what is also important to know is that disk speed mostly matters for people who don't have enough RAM and keep their hard disk rattling because it swaps data in and out. Once you spend a bit of money on RAM, the hard disk speed matters a lot lot less. So I would set my priorities on having enough RAM first, then having plenty of harddisk space, and only last CPU speed and harddisk speed.

It's 11:00 am, June 5th. The apple store in Atlanta (the only one open at the moment) let me in at 10am, I purchased a 2.4 GHz 15-inch Macbook Pro.

It is my first mac since the beige G3.

I also picked up a red 4 Gb ipod nano. (mmmm)

Honestly...I'm afraid to open them, haha. This is a big switch for me! I don't intend to give up windows, I'm going to be running it through Parallel's virtual machine program...which will cost another $80...but yeah.

What an expensive day =) Now to do some work!

<<<<<<<<

No. Those that really need it will know why and can explain it in high detail. If you don't, it's more than you need... Don't listen to the "more is better" crowd - they're not always right...
Texture memory, 128 MB doesn't cut it anymore.[/QUOTE]

For what?!?

Encoding videos. Not everyone sits around watchin multiple videos and encoding videos/music. Like name me one process that isn't practically solely for a professional or rarely used. Video encoding once in awhile doesnt need 128MB extra. And any professional who needs a Mac Pro to significantly speed up his work should either be buying a desktop or be jumping for the 256.

And if you don't like the upgrade, check out the special deals section. Older MBPs from $1349! Wow.

P.S. Robson Cache/Turbo Memory is a scam IMO. You're not missing anything.

IMHO the refurb prices did NOT drop. the 2.16 GHz C2D is still $1599:eek:

as for robson you're right. just buy a hybrid HD or a solid state HD in 6 month and you get more performance. i think robson cache is dead before it's ever implemented.

WTF?

I seriously can't understand people, what were you waiting for?

It's a great update in the current line up and people still complain, always and always.

Everyone wanted Santa Rosa (check), Ram upgrade (check), LED screens (check), faster processor (check), better GPU (check) ... with all this, how can it be that people are still complaining?

that is the nature of the beast, they always complain.

seems like a good update to those who were holding out. Now would be a good time for students to purchase a new MBP for school with its updates and a free nano, you can't go wrong.

ram configuration

i'm very satisfied with this update.

granted, a 13" MBP was a long-shot... but i crave one enough that i will at least wait until wwdc to see if any hints come out (and to see if we can get some reviews of the LED display before i order). though perhaps more likely is a true ultraportable that would not be a full-featured machine.

i do wish that when customizing your machine, apple would let you specify (for increased cost) that you want 1 2GB ram stick rather than 2x1GB. it's still cheaper to buy 3rd party 2x2GB and throw out the built-in ram than to get apple's upgrade, but what a waste! i guess that's the best business model for apple, though.

i thought i read somewhere that OWC had a ram trade-in deal, but i can't find it on their website. anyone know something about it?

would there be any market at all for re-selling the 2x1GB modules that come with my MBP?

Why is this NOT a major upgrade? Santa rosa chip, faster speed (up to four times is being touted on some programs), more Ram for same price, ability to expand to 4 gigs of Ram, LED display, Nvidea's new graphics cards, more hard drive for the same price, option of 7200 rpm 160 gig hard drive, thinner case, slightly lighter.

Just purchased one. My old Powerbook G4 is 3 years old this month.
Thinner? I thought they were 1" thin before too.

ordered mine :)

but was hoping for a magnetic latch system like the regular MB! =( no mention on the apple website.

Open the darn thing up and take lots of pictures and post here :)

Oh, and please...

When did bring up the processor?

RAM is still a rip off from Apple BTW. Charging £407 (HE pricing)/£480 (Standard) to go 4GB, meanwhile 2x2GB sticks can be had for £210 from 3rd parties and selling your 2x1GB default sticks will probably bring the overall cost down even further

7200 RPM 160 GB drive and 4 GBs of memory as an option now. 250 GB drive is available but at the super slow 4200 rpm speed.

right but we still talking about a laptop... I know, I know, you never get enough of those things but still... my iMac has 250 GB and it's a desktop... I can't imagine myself doing a regular backup of 250 GB... ;)

I sold a 12" powerbook (1.33) and bought a macbook (2Ghz c2d) and still have a 12 powerbook (867) from work.

I love the smaller size still of the powerbook and I'm defintely not alone with this thought.

I want to see some screenshots of the new LED screens.

Would you perchance be viewing the screenshots of the new LED screens a standard backlit LCD screen?

If so, how will you see from a screenshot how much better it is? The only way is to see it in person. Or view it on a decent CRT I guess...

These new MacBook Pros are nice though, cheaper in the UK, 2GB RAM, decent graphics. I think that any flaws have been patched with this update.

17" ... standard high quality screen, or high-res screen ready for Leopard? or 15" LED ... argh! Good thing I don't have the money so I don't have to decide.

The new part numbers are:

MA897LL/A

So if you're searching for them online at resellers, that might be helpful.

Well this update has finally made me pull the trigger and buy my very first Mac.
I'm very excited :D
