As it happens I too think the likelyhood is low. The demand is very high though.

My realistic side thinks September as a target for this machine.

I would have agreed but it would mean dropping the bottom 15" which i guess given that its specs are very similar to the mid is maybe likely.

It will be at least Sept if not October+

While I am glad to see Apple is not ignoring the Mac line in this year of the iPhone, the upgrade is disappointing on a few issues. Graphics card should have been the HD2600 as it is faster than the 8600M (I guess AMD is to blame for that). Price in the Canadian store does not reflect current exchange rates (we had another thread on that). Case is the same (Apple designers should really get their finger out).

LED, Santa Rosa and the RAM bump are all very welcome, however. Now where are the new iMacs?

PS I guess this means 8600M's for the iMacs as well.

I just picked up a 2.4 this morning. The LED screen is great, but don't expect anything extraordinary... I haven't really tested out colors or viewed photos in great detail yet either. Other than that, no huge changes.

Oddly, the sticker that you break when you open the paper cover for the first time says the screen contains mercury and should be disposed of properly. I thought the LED screens didn't contain any?

First, I have to say this is the MBP update I've been waiting for. I briefly owned a C2D MBP, and pretty much loved everything about it except for the screen, which had uneven lighting.

I then briefly owned a Sony Vaio SZ460, which had an LED-backlit screen, and it was beautiful - definitely convinced me that LED-backlighting is the way to go.

But I sold the Vaio because Vista is a pantload.

Honestly, this is about as close to a perfect laptop as I could have hoped for. I had been looking at the Asus G1S, which is $2000, but also weighs almost 7 pounds and is a lot thicker/bigger, and doesn't have an LED-backlit screen.

Regarding Intel Turbo Memory; all indications are that it isn't everything its cracked up to be. Most people aren't seeing much benefit from it, and CNET just reported that HP has rejected it as essentially useless:

http://news.com.com/HP+says+no+to+Intels+Turbo+Memory/2100-1004_3-6188531.html?tag=nefd.top

Man, I can't wait to pick one of these up.

Also, I think it is pretty awesome that Apple is the first company out with a 15" LED backlit screen. To date we've only seen 11 and 13.3" LED backlit laptops..... and in the Vaio SZ you have to pay for a premium model to get even that.

It's 11:00 am, June 5th. The apple store in Atlanta (the only one open at the moment) let me in at 10am, I purchased a 2.4 GHz 15-inch Macbook Pro.

It is my first mac since the beige G3.

I also picked up a red 4 Gb ipod nano. (mmmm)

Honestly...I'm afraid to open them, haha. This is a big switch for me! I don't intend to give up windows, I'm going to be running it through Parallel's virtual machine program...which will cost another $80...but yeah.

What an expensive day =) Now to do some work!

So where's your impressions of the display?

I don't expect anything extraordinary with the screen..... but as long as it is nice and bright and evenly lit, it will be a big improvement from the old MBP screen.

Well, you'd have to blame ATI/AMD for that one, not Apple. The power requirements of ATI's new line make them inferior to Nvidia's current offerings for mobile use...

Does anybody know if it uses that Robson technology (start up from flash) isn't that part of the Santa Rosa Platform too.

Anyway I orderd one to replace my iBook. POWERRRRRRR :D

What is your source that the HD2600 is faster? From what I've seen, the performance of the HD2600 is pretty much on par with the 8600MGT, at worst........ definitely not significantly faster.

Something to keep in mind: Intel's Robson technology can be implemented on the motherboard itself or on an Express Card plugged into a slot on the motherboard.

Oh really? Interesting.....

Well then I guess there i nothing to worry about future proofing. This is the future. What more do I need.

Coming from a 12" PB.

Much more screen space.
Magsafe.
Webcam.
Intel chips.
LED display.
802.11n.
Nice vid. card.
Double the mem and hard drive.

I like.

Now is it too big to lug around?

Did you get urs from the US or elsewhere and is it a 17" or 15"?

Anybody have any sites that have benchmarks of the NVIDIA 8600M GT? I'm curious to see how it performs.

Edit: and why is the pricing system still messed up? (add $80 ends up taking $80 away from the total)

I'm curious about three things:

- illumination distribution? Is it evenly illuminated when you put a solid desktop background?

- Grain? Does it have the graininess that the old ones had? If you open a browser window with white and drag it around, do you see the grain in the surface of the display staying still while the background moves?

- Viewing angles both horizontal and vertical? How are they?

Thanks!

Hey, Eidorian and other video card experts... how big of a deal is the 256MB VRAM over 128MB for casual gamers doing more Second Life, WoW, etc. Not doing competitive high frame-rate FPS stuff anymore (retired ;-) ). My Thinkpad T42 I am using now huffs & puffs playing WoW, so I know it will be better using either, I am wondering what the difference between the two cards in my situation is.

I've been planning on getting the mid-range 15.4" MBP, but now I am seeing a $500 difference for .2GHz speed, 40GB of HD space & 128MB of VRAM. Those sound pretty good, but $500? I'm inclined to put that difference away & use it 1.5 to 2 years from now for a more rapid update to next gen rather than waiting my usual 3.

Appreciate the help.

I think it is a nice update all around really. Some people complain to much. The biggest thing is te use of LED backlight in the 15in model and still keeping stuff at the same price.

I am hoping and dreaming that a 13.3in MBP with the specs of the low end 15.4 comes out at WWDC. Apple won't get me to pay the premium for the Black color and (more then likely) won't get me to move to the higher priced 15.4 model. 15.4 is a little bigger then what i want to carry around on campus for 6-8 hours a day. Not to mention if they do a 13.3in with LED backlight just think of the battery life the thing could get.

SAME EXACT FOR ME!

I would love that. Thats why I'm waiting till Monday. That would be perfect! Only think better would be a tablet.

Probably just limited quantities and as I would think the 17" are the lowest selling model they feel they will have enough to meet demand.

I'm thinking this has more to do with limited supplies by manufacturer. I ordered a Seagate Momentus 7200/160 to put in my MBP C2D (17") and could find it nowhere online...everyone was backordered. Ended up deciding to wait as I read that Hitachi is introducing a 7200/200GB 2.5" drive later this year.

There's a WD 250GB/5400rpm drive just around the corner and a Hitachi drive of a similar spec too.

I;m sure Seagate have something planned along those lines too.

...as for robson you're right. just buy a hybrid HD or a solid state HD in 6 month and you get more performance. i think robson cache is dead before it's ever implemented.

Let's take a stroll down Reality Street...

Currently, a 32GB SSD costs about $500. In 6 months, you might be able to buy a 64GB for ~$500.

Meanwhile, a 1GB Robson cache costs about $50. In terms of performance bang per buck Robson is the winner (by far.)

When did bring up the processor?

When did you bring up any reason why 256 is absolutely neccessary for everyone? Just a couple reasons why 256 is at all needed for almost all tasks. Will the 256MB really decrease your work time? If so then upgrade, if not. The you dont need it.
