Magnetic latches

While their latch is ok, I agree this is an area where they could innovate like they did with magsafe. I liked the concept in the old clamshell iBooks that had no latch.

Yes, but could be a problem when stacking notebooks or having others in the same proximity - the strength of the magnet needed for a magnetic latch could be threatening to the HD of a nearby machine

No benchmarks for the non-XT version so I had to go with what is out there. A non-issue anyways as Apple has made their choice. Probably not much difference between the two in the end. At least the new card is nearly twice as fast as the X1600.

Honestly, I think Apple made the right call. If you look at most other "gaming" laptops right now, most companies are going with the NVidia 8M line...... the Dell XPS, the Asus G1S, etc......

I've only seen a handful of machines that are using the new ATI cards, and the only one I can think of off the top of my head is that 20" HP monstrosity.

These must be standard stickers which Apple decided to use up. Very misleading:confused:

I realize it's just a change to the internals, but apple should be making a bigger deal about the display.

Their site mentions the LED display very little. It makes me question whether or not i'm even getting the new display or getting the old one.

For example, when you chose the glossy display, the price reduces to 1898. Is that because the glossy display is not an LED display?

I'm sure it is still an LED display, but the lack of them drawing attention to the phrase "LED" is troubling.

The only way i knew for sure the glossy was still LED is because someone else said selecting the modem option also reduces the price. :D

128 MB of video RAM hasn't been top of the line since before 2005. The MacBook Pro is supposed to be a mobile version of the Mac Pro. A CTO option would have been just fine but spending $500 for minimal upgrades isn't worth it.

Every example of watching and encoding video that you presented was entirely CPU bound.
And your examples of something that really needs the extra video ram would be?

I think you're correct. That's a software issue that could possibly be addressed in Leopard perhaps?
Yeah I would def. expect it. Maybe keep the curent internal HD and upgarde to a faster hybrid if Leopard can take it.

Video RAM really has no line - it's a bit of a paper scam. The performance that you may be attributing to more video ram is actually a function of higher bandwidth. Bottom line, there are very few theoretical applications on a mid-range card (which this most definitely is) that will benefit from the additional video memory - those that actually need it know who they are...

So people have been to their apple stores and gotten their new MPB right?? I came to work an hour early this morning so I could take a long lunch and go get my laptop (and therefore have somethign to play with when I'm off work at 5).

Also, does anyone know - if I go into the store this morning can I get an upgraded harddrive on my machine? Or do they only sell the base models in stores?

WHEW
I can now let go of my balls

I was going to vomit if we didn't get these specs... :p
THANKS :apple: !!

For $100 I'd go for the 1920x1200, squint in pain at the tiny type for 8 hours a day until developers are using Leopard's res-independence, and then enjoy high-res sharpness at any scale I want from then on out :) Or maybe during those intervening months I'd just use a non-native res to save my eyes--there'd be a little blurriness, but I've used CRTs that were blurrier than non-native LCD modes. And meanwhile when I wanted 1920x1200 for something, it's a click away.

I am, however, seeking an MBP smaller than 15, not larger. I will remain patient for a few more months :)

I just bought my 2,2 GHz 15,4" MBP with a glossy screen (to see my photographs at their best). I'm really excited since this is my first :apple: computer. Goodbye PC Guy!

Great specs, everything I hoped for and it will be arriving in little over a week. Super!

Photographs look their best on a matt screen because the colours are accurate and they look even better when you have them printed properly.

1. FCS
2. Dual monitors
3. Gaming

128 MB is just making it past entry level.

Final Cut Studio.... yes everyone uses that everyday.

Dual Montiors.... once again I'd be surprised if even half use an external monitor often let alone two. And if you have the cash for two....

Gaming is the only weak point... but then again no one said macs are gaming machines.... especially laptops. Especially 1" thin gaming mac laptops. Alright for the casual, but I would not be buying it for pure gaming.

Because a 12" would mean less weight and those of us who are interested are always on the lookout for something with both portability and power.

Even I, as a 12" PB owner am hesitant to commit to a 13" machine. We want something that is small and powerful as we possibly can.

Okay, yes, but it's just numbers fooling with you. The aspect ratio plays an important role in the area of screen. If the 13.3" MB had a 4:3 screen (like the 12"), it would have almost 23% more screen area than the 12". The 13.3" screen has a 16:10 aspect ratio, and thus only has 15% more screen area. Likewise, the remaining components that are size-scaleable are the case and the logic board (one is aluminum and the other is modified cardboard or fiberglass). Period. All other components will have the same weight no matter if it's 12" or 15" or 17" or 20".

Besides, components have gotten lighter since the days of the 12" PB. The new MBPs are 0.2 pounds lighter than previous MBPs. Let's take the current MBs as an example then. If you first replace the components with those from the MBP, theoretically, you would drop the same 0.2 lbs. That would bring the weight from 5.1 lbs to 4.9 lbs. Then replace that thick plastic shell with aluminum and you'll drop even more - perhaps another 0.2 lbs. That leaves us at 4.7 lbs. How heavy was the 12" PB? 4.6 lbs.

I firmly believe that if Apple were to make a 13.3" MBP, it will be within 5% of the weight of the 12" PB (4.8 lbs or less).

Don't let numbers fool with your head.

MacBook Pro

We can go into detail on the GMA950 as well. That's for another thread I've beaten to a pulp though.

Dunno about the last part (although i doubt they have anything but the advertised models) but my local store already has them. Just call the store and ask. That's what I did. The end of the work day can't come fast enough.

Well I just pulled the trigger. The Hi-Res display is what sold me...

Mac Book Thin

I would love that. Thats why I'm waiting till Monday. That would be perfect! Only think better would be a tablet.

Imagine if it were the first Flash Drive notebook - or combination
Here's hoping it shows up at WWDC next week :D

Um, isn't everything drawn on screen put in Video Ram?
