Crucial 4GB is cheaper -- is there a good reason not to upgrade yourself aftermarket?

Crucial sells this following, which it matched as compatible memory when I said the system is a 15.4 inch MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz (already on their website!)

$369.99

4GB kit (2GBx2)

CT687602 DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64

Is there a reason not to buy the stock 2GB memory and get this aftermarket? See lots of people ordering the 4GB from Apple.

My first post on MacRumors, so please be kind :p

2. I've trolled this entire thread and read the posts regarding HDD and speed. I really don't want to wait 4-6 wks more for the 7200rpm, but I notice a lot of people are doing so. The logic of the arguments (perpendicular architecture and larger capacity with both filling from outside in) seem to imply that the 200GB 4200 with max'd out RAM would be the best way to go.

For those of you getting the 7200rpm, could you explain your rationale to me (this is not to start an argument, just want to know if there is a logic making the 4-6 week wait worthwhile).

Thanks! Can't wait to be a Mac user again (in college, Centris 610!):D

I was wondering the same thing about rpm speeds. I don't know much about them at all, I am going to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and currently have a MacBook with a 100GB hard drive that has only 10 GB left. so, should I go with the 200GB at 4200rpm or the 160GB at 5400rpm. I need space, I will only be accumliating more and more photos, music and videos at college. Just wondering what the speed difference really is.

Yawn! Where's the 3G & 4G wireless on the logic board? Other PC vendors have integrated HSDPA, WiMax, EV-DO, and Apple is the laggard with absolutely nothing available build-to-order! :( How sad, Apple should be leading, but it is way behind -- business users need this. And why is full 1080P (1920x1080) only available on the biggest PowerBook? Dell has smaller ones w/this resolution, where are the Blue-Ray drives and flash RAM to help sleep wakeup and boot times?! I had hoped for more innovation this round, but cannot find it.

Come on Apple, don't turn into a Palm with their way slow Treo updates and ridiculous Foleo...

I don't know about some things you talked about, but how much faster could you want the boot/sleep wake times to be? They boot in 20 seconds or less and sleep to wake is almost instant (with that little drag afterwards for a few seconds). And this is with my 1st gen intel imac. Other stuff could be good for BTOs but most people don't need cards to connect to cell networks.

So can anyone give a description of the capabilities of these new graphics cards? I know a laptop isn't meant for gaming, but how would it handle something like Half-life 2?

glossy screen different?

I was just on the education store site and noticed that if I check off the glossy screen option, the price drops. Is there something wrong with the glossy screen like it's not LCD or something?

There is a $135 difference from $2299 to $2164.

Sorry, I mean LED not LCD my fingers don't type this stuff on autopilot yet.

I'd like to get a 17" one, but my credit card limit is a mere $1000. :( (I'm a college student so $$ is rare).

On aside not, anyone know when/if Apple will update its 30" display? Would look good next to a new shiny MBP if I had the $$

I'd say get the 200 GB unit .... you probably won't see much difference in speed, plus you'll have 40 more Gigs to fill with weighty .PSD files :D

MacBook Pro

We can go into detail on the GMA950 as well. That's for another thread I've beaten to a pulp though.
You wanna use Final Cut Studio often and quickly then two words:

MAC PRO!

I dont think anywhere does it say a base Macbook Pro will perform like a Mac Pro. A high end 15" or 17" maybe but not the base. If you wanna pay $2000 for that kinda performance buy yourself a desktop. Power and portability come at a price, if you can't afford it then guess what.....

I like to see some clarification about the screen quality of the glossies. I would love a glossy / LED 15 but worry that it may be a 6 bit color vs. the 8 bit color.

There are also some people reporting some price differences when they select glossy which makes me wonder.

It should be able to run Half-Life 2 at High settings without any problems at all. My old Radeon 9800 Pro was able to do so just fine at 1024x768, so I'm certain this card (which is 3 generations ahead of my aforementioned card) will run it very well.

I just can't wait to check out EVE-Online and Company of Heroes with the DirectX 10 updates in Vista. :D

It's just a glitch. I am sure they will be all worked out by tomorrow. Because right now if you go to the checkout, the glossy screen makes it remain the same price even though on the previous customization screen it dropped it $135.

Could someone please put a link up here, with the specs on the LED screen? Or rather the evidence that they are in these new machines? I still cannot see any mentioning on apple.com

They say it is TFT, what is the difference in TFT and LED? Should it not just be LED?

Does anyone have a before and after shot of the specs?

Not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed.

I'd go w/ the 160 GB 7200 RPM drive. That way, it's fast enough for videos. If you need more space, just get an external drive. Or if you or one of your friends feel comfortable opening your case up, you can always replace the internal one.

I remember hearing that LED backlit displays consume less power than the ones MBP used to have. ANyone have a comparison on battery life?

I am a graphic designer and work alot with C4D, AE, And Photoshop, how big of a deal is it to upgrade the HD RPMs?

Not big deal at all, unless much of your work is skimming through your photo library trying to find the best picture to your project.

Normally, once you load pictures to Photoshop, they're in the memory as long as the software is open. You will need memory and CPU the most, but while you work at Photoshop and have enough memory, the hard drive plays very little part in the equation.

But as soon as you try to find something from the hard drive, you will notice the difference instantly.

Eidorian. When you say 256Mb is for dual monitors - do you mean dual monitors in addition to the laptop's own display? (ie, three monitors - if this is even possible).

Am torn between a 15" and one external 20" cinema display, or just a 17". If I go for the 15", will I need the 256Mb. I don't do gaming but will probably dabble with adobe CS3 and final cut / logic over the machine's lifetime (although only on a semi-pro basis at most).

Cheers
SL
You would be fine if you only dabble. Say once a week or something. Less than an hour a week I would say its no where worth it. If you got the money for the high-end 15", then go for it. But you wont really need it, it will help sure. But purely based on how much time you use these kinda apps. If its daily for an hour or two and you can pay for the 256, go for it. If less time or money... then go for 128.

"CrackedButter" isn't really a name!

Thats right, it's my alias. But now you're really nitpicking. A name can be anything you want it to be and you can spell it however you want as well, Kalisphoenix! :)

You just made my day, look at this line (from the link you provided):

Although widely disapproved as nonstandard and more common in the habitual speech of the less educated, ain't in senses 1 and 2 is flourishing in American English.

This is what I get listening to my educated friends! :D What do they know?

I just noticed that Ram prices have dropped dramactically...

you can now get a 2Gb Kit from crucial for £54 inc VAT.... looks like I will be upgrading my Macbook after my holiday

Perfect

Ah man, it's exactly what i was hoping for. I'm really glad they put a good new graphics card in there. That's a selling point right there.

I would have preffered some LCD love for the 17", but i'll survive.
