It's just a glitch. I am sure they will be all worked out by tomorrow. Because right now if you go to the checkout, the glossy screen makes it remain the same price even though on the previous customization screen it dropped it $135.

Shoot! I was hoping it was just a great deal hidden in the page. Oh well, I'll still buy one to replace my beige G3 (whopping 300MhZ) tower. I think the performance difference may be worth it. It's time.

I just got the new MBP.. canceled my online order and purchased it from the local apple store :)

i'm at work right now but the black levels on it look amazing.

Curse you, Apple, for forcing me to decide between a new MacBook Pro and a Nikon D200. CURSE YOU!

On that note, is anyone interested in purchasing a 15" 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 with an aftermarket 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM), 1 GB RAM, and a 128 MB Radeon 9700?

The 8600M GT is GREAT for the mobile platform. You're just getting short changed with 128 MB in a 256/512 MB world. The bottleneck is the video RAM on this chip and it's $500 more to resolve it.

What? Are we talking about gaming here? If there's no huge 3D demands, then why on earth could 128MB video ram be a bottleneck?

Actually Toast offers full Blu-Ray support!!
Ah, but what software package allows you to create BR movies? (FCP only does HD-DVD)

For that purpose, 4MB is barely enough and 16MB is plenty. The current massive video memory is mostly used to 3D stuff...
Actually for 1920x1200 (at 8 bits a pixel) you would need approx 18432000 bytes of ram (ie more than 16MB). And that would assume that Core Image (or Core OpenGL) does deferred rendering of what is displayed on screen other wise each windows would need it's own buffer (depended on window size).

You wanna use Final Cut Studio often and quickly then two words:

MAC PRO!

I dont think anywhere does it say a base Macbook Pro will perform like a Mac Pro. A high end 15" or 17" maybe but not the base. If you wanna pay $2000 for that kinda performance buy yourself a desktop. Power and portability come at a price, if you can't afford it then guess what.....
So you have to get a desktop and Apple's Pro laptops won't cut it?

Alright!

I kinda agree with the people that actually know what they are talking about. Apple could have gone a long way with this update, but instead they gave us a paltry new logic board that didn't offer that much over the old MBP. The graphics are welcome, as well as the display, but were is the built in 3G/4G? How about that Western Digital 250 GB 5400 rpm option? Blu Ray or HD-DVD optical drive as an option maybe?

Those would make the machine a bit more competitive in the professional market. They don't have to come standard, they should come as BTO. Other than that this update is a very small one. People whined about the MacBooks not getting santa rosa and still offering a combo drive in the low end. Now with these MBP upgrades everyone is just happy that they came out, completely forgetting what Apple could have offered and what is really the current tech out there.

I see what other people mean by claiming that MacFan Boys never see anything wrong with what the company does. Apple is still number one to me but they could have done a lot better.

i wonder how long it will be before we find out if they moo, whine or if the graphix card is underclocked. tick, tick tick

The Core Duo Macs could already play 1080p h.264. If Apple writes a driver to take advantage of the video card it'll offload decoding to the GPU.

Actually yes he is right. If you want to edit video with little to no problems then get the desktop. The laptop will do you well, but the desktop will do you well... much better. :D
Just makes it seem like a desktop is a requirement now and Apple's laptops aren't up to par.

I'm still talking about being limited by texture addressing space and not processor power. I'm getting tired of this.

Texture space

um hullo, these are the new 2.4 ghz models. They will start to mooing 55% sooner than the 2.16 core duo.

booooo! no redesign.

What do you really want on a redesign? There are only two things I would really like to see and only one of them will benefit more people then just myself.

1. A full Digital VT Keyboard. (That is for me only because I do some work on old VAXes and I need to use a terminal emulator in windows to give me a virtual VAX keyboard, I can probably find an external USP VT Keyboad if I looked hard enough)

2. The Ability to switch the iSite to view from the outside of the case. So I can record lectures or take picture of the board for school, without having to switch the system all the way around.

I like to see some clarification about the screen quality of the glossies. I would love a glossy / LED 15 but worry that it may be a 6 bit color vs. the 8 bit color.

MBP will always be 6bit and if you need 8bit you have to buy ACD. The only difference between antiglare/glossy is the finish — what type of coating has been used.

Personally, I like the antiglare much better. Glossy is nice in some conditions, but in everyday life antiglare wins.

We aren't talking about processor power, we are talking about components, speed of HDD, upgradability, grapics cards, screen size, and the price for all of those components. We are getting tired of college students cutting on a laptop then running out of HDD and getting dropped frames, when they should have just bought the desktop like we said.

lovely .. i wanted to buy a macbook till now but check out this combination

macbook pro 15" with student discount and glossy screen option costs .. hold your breath

And the magnetic latch from the MacBook so my finger doesn't get caught in that awful one that is currently on the MacBook Pros. :D
