Someone do post pictures of their new screen when they get it? So the 'ol CCFC MBPs can compare even illumination, etc...and post real-life battery times too.:)
saw their comparison with their "old" CD "5 hour battery life" to the new "6 hour"...perhaps in reality its only 4?

perhaps i may upgrade.

lovely .. i wanted to buy a macbook till now but check out this combination

I kinda agree with the people that actually know what they are talking about. Apple could have gone a long way with this update, but instead they gave us a paltry new logic board that didn't offer that much over the old MBP. The graphics are welcome, as well as the display, but were is the built in 3G/4G? How about that Western Digital 250 GB 5400 rpm option? Blu Ray or HD-DVD optical drive as an option maybe?

Those would make the machine a bit more competitive in the professional market. They don't have to come standard, they should come as BTO. Other than that this update is a very small one. People whined about the MacBooks not getting santa rosa and still offering a combo drive in the low end. Now with these MBP upgrades everyone is just happy that they came out, completely forgetting what Apple could have offered and what is really the current tech out there.

I see what other people mean by claiming that MacFan Boys never see anything wrong with what the company does. Apple is still number one to me but they could have done a lot better.
IS THIS A JOKE?! Like display is welcome. Thats a huge advancement. A great leap environmentally, in battery life (an hour extra battery, thats like 30%!!!!), and in weight (5% weight reduction). I dont see that on any other laptop for that price. An option for a HD that you can replace on your own, a 3G card that you can put in the PCI slot sort of seems little pesky evolutionary stuff than anything. Current highest possible CPU is in these computer. Newest display technology in it. Newest wireless standard in it.

But HD/wireless card.... please...

and please find me a 1" Blu-ray/HD drive. I love the feasibility of your ideas for looking at what tech is out there.

Are the extra bucks between the entry level and mid-range worth it for:-

- 0.2 ghz extra speed
- 128mb video card ram
- (And I was going to upgrade to the 160gb 7200 anyway...)

I'll be doing video editing, but not 3D gaming...

Thoughts?

Who in their right mind would pay $500 more for 0.2 GHz, 40GB extra space, and 128MB more VRAM?

Me. CPU bump and extra VRAM is worth $500 to me. Now, the $750 price difference to go from 2GB to 4GB, I didn't bite. I'll do that myself, when I feel the time is right.

Rationale: CPU and GPU aren't upgradeable so the longer I can make this thing last, the better off I'll be. Plus, convincing the wife to allow another purchase is a long, involved process that should not often be repeated.;)

No

MBP will always be 6bit and if you need 8bit you have to buy ACD. The only difference between antiglare/glossy is the finish — what type of coating has been used.

Personally, I like the antiglare much better. Glossy is nice in some conditions, but in everyday life antiglare wins.

Actually, I was told that there is a big difference in the color trueness. The mattes are much better with color accuracy.

I just bought my new MBP 15 matte ... heavier than I thought it would be! But it looks amazing.

Width x height x depth x screens = bytes.

32-bit (True Color) = 4 bytes.

1920 x 1200 x 4 x 1 = 9,216,000 bytes

Is that right? I seem to recall the 360 only having enough EDRAM for one 1280x720 2xaa buffer before having to tile. I would imagine 1080p would be much bigger.

Oh well learn something new everyday...

Can you elaborate?

I have 320 GB of external storage and I'm not even close to filling it up. I don't count on a laptop hard drive to hold ALL of my data.

What do you mean by "dropping frames"?

I don't plan on spending $500 more for just 128 MB of video RAM. The additional drive space and 200 MHz aren't worth it either.

7900GS in the Inspirion E1710 and it's much less then a MacBook Pro. In before lack of EX10 support...

Do I expect Apple to compete with it in price? No. The stock configuration is nice with an insanely fast processor and lots of RAM.
Ohh... it has a faster video card for less money. Thanks for showing me my options if I want a super fast video card and nothing else in a laptop like I said. If there is nothing else even close the MBP in price with a better video card then obviously its not very economically feasible and thus you can't complain about the $500. You see? Nifty how that works.

OK so I'm ordering MBP 2.4, 2GB of RAM and unfortunatly 160 GB 5400:eek: cos Im not willing to wait over a month...Now the question. Will apple store exchange the drive for me if I buy one and put crucial 2x2GB RAM?
I dont feel comfortable with taking MBP apart....

RAM isn't difficult to install at all. It's just a small, one screw panel on the bottom of the machine. The old RAM pops out, new RAM pops in, screw the panel back on and you're set!

Hard drive on the other hand is pretty tricky.

In order NOT to void the warranty, who can upgrade HDD in the MBP aftermarket? Can/will Apple Store? What about other authorized Apple retailers?

I think the LED display is for the matte display only. Maybe that's why the price drops when you select glossy.

They're the same price. If you proceed to the checkout the price will change to what it is supposed to be.

No, Apple confirmed for me that its LED for both. And that makes sense cause glossy is just a coating. Not different screens. Its a glitch. If you configure it and then "Add to Cart" you'll see that the price will jump back up to the standard price.

What's with all the crybabies that go on about lackluster upgrades and screwing over college students? How many students are actually affected by the sudden upgrades after they buy? Do their computers suddenly stop working? Being one of those students, I can't say that I suffered much.

I still have my rev A black macbook and I'm still lovin' this machine, and since I'm not really pressed to buy anything right now I have the luxury of waiting a great deal longer, or at least until Leopard is released for the preload. But, if I had a much older computer and was pretty much ready to dump it, I would've jumped on the base MBP in a hot second.

I've been spoiled by my MB though, as I really do like the easy to replace HDD, which is what I'd like to see for the MBP. I guess I'll just keep waiting, and watch from my trusty little 13" laptop. :D

Very very nice upgrade in my opinion. The LED backlight alone sells me.

Like I have said many times before, Apple has great all around specifications in their laptops but concentrates too much on the processor speed. I have absolutely no complaints about every other component in either besides the video card. Even so it's the amount of video RAM and not their choice of GPU.

I don't see any real benefit from the $500 jump to the midrange model then the video card memory.

I just got the new MBP.. canceled my online order and purchased it from the local apple store :)

i'm at work right now but the black levels on it look amazing.

Yeah, that's one of the great things I had noticed with the LED-backlit screens on the Sony Vaio SZ premium models.

I did type a long reply but this F***ing PC I am typing on just lost my damn post!

Here is the short version.

24" iMac: Top of the line, 250GB @7200rpm, 256MB GPU --> $2000
15" MBP: Bottom of the line, 120GB @ 5400rpm, 128MB GPU --> $2000

You are smart to get the external drive, but most college students have trouble getting the computer alone. They want the laptop because it is cool, they can show it off, and take it with them. Forgetting that someone can steal it easier, and that it will cost them more. Then when it comes to editing, they run everything off of that one internal system drive.

After a few hundred gigs get loaded and unloaded from the drive. They hear, Errrgh! Your drive is about to crash, then "click" "click" "click" Well... your drive just crashed.

Getting the desktop saves them money, time, and headaches if they are going to be doing a lot of video editing.

Dropped frames are when the computer can't keep up with the video playback, or your HDD is too slow to keep up with video playback or capture.

I asked a rep at J&R Computer World (downtown Manhattan) about this same exact thing. He said no :( though he could be wrong. I may go up to the SoHo Apple store and check if they do these things, though I have my doubts.

But if you bought an earlier macbook model, you won't see any mention of the method of backlighting for those either.
