Me. CPU bump and extra VRAM is worth $500 to me. Now, the $750 price difference to go from 2GB to 4GB, I didn't bite. I'll do that myself, when I feel the time is right.

Rationale: CPU and GPU aren't upgradeable so the longer I can make this thing last, the better off I'll be. Plus, convincing the wife to allow another purchase is a long, involved process that should not often be repeated.;)

I completely agree! Just so you know I just bought the same 2x 2Gchips for $250 elsewhere.

MagSafe compatible with regular Macbook?

I noticed that the Magsafe power adapter is rated at 85W, whereas the Macbook power adapter is rated at 60W. Is it possible to use the lower-rated 60W as an emergency backup (though charging much slower, if at all)?

The MBP just became one hell of a machine. Now if we could just get some of that fabulousness in the MB- or if they would just make a more durable case for the MBP, I'd be all over that.

how's the battery life going to be looking on these new MBP's. I'll take anything that will give 4+ hours out.

No, Apple confirmed for me that its LED for both. And that makes sense cause glossy is just a coating. Not different screens. Its a glitch. If you configure it and then "Add to Cart" you'll see that the price will jump back up to the standard price.

Cool... You guys are on top of things!

I did type a long reply but this F***ing PC I am typing on just lost my damn post!

Here is the short version.

24" iMac: Top of the line, 250GB @7200rpm, 256MB GPU --> $2000
15" MBP: Bottom of the line, 120GB @ 5400rpm, 128MB GPU --> $2000

You are smart to get the external drive, but most college students have trouble getting the computer alone. They want the laptop because it is cool, they can show it off, and take it with them. Forgetting that someone can steal it easier, and that it will cost them more. Then when it comes to editing, they run everything off of that one internal system drive.

After a few hundred gigs get loaded and unloaded from the drive. They hear, Errrgh! Your drive is about to crash, then "click" "click" "click" Well... your drive just crashed.

Getting the desktop saves them money, time, and headaches if they are going to be doing a lot of video editing.

Dropped frames are when the computer can't keep up with the video playback, or your HDD is too slow to keep up with video playback or capture.
My short version

1. 1.66 GHz Core Duo can do 1080p on CPU alone
2. Top of the line iMac -> consumer machine
3. MacBook Pro low-end -> pro machine

Please I'm an assistant Mac administrator for my department. Don't talk to me about such mundane things.

I just picked up the 2.2Ghz Here are the graphics specs:
GeForce 8600M GT:

{TECH SPECS}

I don't know where in the specs to confirm LED backlighting

that's because the LED is just the backlight. You could, if you wanted to, use a flaming torch to light your screen and your computer wouldn't know the difference...but it might melt.

If the rotational speed is higher, it means that the disk has a possibility to read more blocks per second (transfer rate) and that the disk has a possibility to find the block it needs faster (seek time). That's it.

Now the density means that one round contains more blocks. That also means that the disk with higher density has a possibility to read more blocks per second, but on the other hand higher density doesn't mean lower seek times.

So, transfer-rate-wise, 5400rpm disk with higher density can be on par with 7200rpm disk with lower density. But seek-time-wise, the same 7200rpm can be a whole lot faster and therefore "feel" a lot better.

In real world; I believe 5400rpm 160GB drive can be very close to performance level of 7200rpm 100GB drive. But as soon as you put in a 7200rpm 160GB drive, the game is over — there's just no comparison.
However, you are not considering seek times. A 7200 RPM hard drive will take less time to begin reading a file. When you are reading many small files scattered all across the disk, this adds up.

I think we might actually get 4+ out of these thanks to the new displays. I guess I'm holding out for one more rev, but that's really just because we don't have any need for the new machine just yet.

I kinda agree with the people that actually know what they are talking about. Apple could have gone a long way with this update, but instead they gave us a paltry new logic board that didn't offer that much over the old MBP. The graphics are welcome, as well as the display, but were is the built in 3G/4G? How about that Western Digital 250 GB 5400 rpm option? Blu Ray or HD-DVD optical drive as an option maybe?

Those would make the machine a bit more competitive in the professional market. They don't have to come standard, they should come as BTO. Other than that this update is a very small one. People whined about the MacBooks not getting santa rosa and still offering a combo drive in the low end. Now with these MBP upgrades everyone is just happy that they came out, completely forgetting what Apple could have offered and what is really the current tech out there.

I see what other people mean by claiming that MacFan Boys never see anything wrong with what the company does. Apple is still number one to me but they could have done a lot better.

Regarding Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, it would be nice, and I guess Apple would use blu-ray, but I think it's still going to be a while before it is clearly necessary.

As far as integrated 3G/4G stuff, I've honestly never understood the appeal of this. I hate the idea of buying a laptop and then having to be forced to use whichever cell provider provides service for the integrated WWAN service your laptop came with. I'd much rather have an ExpressCard modem and them be able to easily switch to someone else if the service quality was bad, etc.

Actually, I was told that there is a big difference in the color trueness. The mattes are much better with color accuracy.

I just bought my new MBP 15 matte ... heavier than I thought it would be! But it looks amazing.

Actually the color accuracy is exactly the same. They are the exact same panels, the only difference is one has a glossy finish over the panel the other has a matte finish over the panel.

Some people prefer matte, some prefer glossy.

The matte finish is slightly dull, and very slightly smears and disperses light. Therefore it is less reflective.

The glossy suffers from reflections on the surface but is ever so slightly brighter, sharper, and appears to have more contrast. Kindof like turning up the sharpness knob on your television.

Some people are dead set positive that professionals prefer the matte finish. However in my own casual association with professional graphics artists and video professionals, I find the choice much closer to 50 - 50.

You just need to see which works best for you in your work environment.

The website says 6 but thats never the case with laptop battery estimates. But it would still be a little off for it to drop more than 2 hours so hopefully we can do 4+. New York to Texas on my MBP EASY

Can you use this ADC Hardware discount at a retail store or must it be online?

polite notice : please remove your cranium from your rectum, thank you.
It's a nice hostile environment here but I dealt with it last time in the MacBook update thread over the GMA950.

I don't need to worry about backing up since it's done to my external hard drive daily. I don't have my iMac anymore but I do have two external copies of my data.

I don't see a reason to talk about dropping frames while playing video either when the Mac mini can handle it just fine.

Is there anything else with my experience that I could help you with? I'm still a student but my department always comes to me for anything Mac related. Maybe you should have concentrated on the rest of my post instead of my job credentials.

I believe it's online only. I called this morning to see if I could order by phone, but they said I had to order through the online store, so I'm guessing in-store is out of the question as well.

Okay, I just checked. Final Cut Studio comes with DVD Studio Pro 4. According to Apples own product website it only masters HD-DVD. Adobe's Premier Pro CS3 (apparently not out yet) supports Blu-ray mastering.

This are great specs....Apple delivered once again! The redesign was and remains completely irrelevant at this point, why, what's wrong with the mbp as it is. As always, some people complain, but who cares...really.

Do we get the nano with it? Also do we get free copy of Leopard in the Fall?

Has anyone noticed they are charging 500 dollars for just .20 ghz speed more. To me that seems crazy there is no way the jump from 2.20 to 2.40 is worth 500 dollars anyone else feel this way. I think im going to get the 2.20 with a 160 gb 7200 it seems like the better value.

How do you figure thus:

Optical drive3 24x Combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW) 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

First row is Basic MacBook. Second is Upgraded Macbook. Last is MacBook Pro. Looks the same to me.

I was looking at the comparison-chart of various Macbooks in apple.com, and it listed the MBP as having 6x Superdrive while MB had 8x. It was propably just an oversight on their part :)
