Do we get the nano with it? Also do we get free copy of Leopard in the Fall?
I'm somewhat interested in this too.

Has anyone noticed they are charging 500 dollars for just .20 ghz speed more. To me that seems crazy there is no way the jump from 2.20 to 2.40 is worth 500 dollars anyone else feel this way. I think im going to get the 2.20 with a 160 gb 7200 it seems like the better value.
It is crazy for $500.

They are charging 500 bucks for .20GHZ more CPU-speed. And 256MB of VRAM as opposed to 128MB. And 160GB HD as opposed to 120GB.

Here here. Unless you absolutely need every ounce of power or like to throw around money. I'm going for base. 2GB of RAM standard makes it so what else do you need.

Dropped frames are when the computer can't keep up with the video playback, or your HDD is too slow to keep up with video playback or capture.

Since you clearly have experience with this, I'll ask this question of you: is the 4200 rpm 200GB drive too slow to edit DV? I'm looking for a larger drive but am very tired of being tethered to my desk for all purposes. I would mainly be editing off an external FireWire 400, but might capture a project here and there to the internal disc. Am I risking dropping frames even during capture -- nevermind playback -- if I've got a drive that slow?

The student promotion doesn't work with the ADC discount. And yes, you do get a free copy of Leopard in the fall.

I won't be buying my MacBook Pro with the ADC discount as I'd like the iPod as well, but I might buy the ADC Student package anyway, since you get Leopard + other stuff for (probably) cheaper than Leopard's actual price.

Before anyone gets angry, Sorry for the BOLD writing.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE POST SOME PICS OF UNBOXING AND HARDWARE; MAYBE SOME SCREEN SHOTS. I KNOW YOUR BUSY WITH YOUR NEW MAC; BUT ANY PICS WILL DO. THX

they fixed the pricing mistakes

Just in the last five minutes they have fixed the pricing mistakes that were giving unexpected discounts.

no longer save $50 (instead of charging $100) for 1920x1200 17" screen
no longer save $50 (instead of charging $175 or $100) for 200GB hard drive
no longer save $150 for glossy 15" screen

Perhaps I should have struck while the iron was hot.

My short version

1. 1.66 GHz Core Duo can do 1080p on CPU alone
2. Top of the line iMac -> consumer machine
3. MacBook Pro low-end -> pro machine

Please I'm an assistant Mac administrator for my department. Don't talk to me about such mundane things.

Dude... your not listening to me. Get your head out of your ass and stop being so F***ing arrogant

That iMac consumer machine will run circles around that MacBook Pro based on hardware alone. And we aren't talking about decoding video, I am talking about the whole thing.... video decoding, capture, then encoding to a codec that FCP can use. Two different things.

Calm down before you make an @$$ out of yourself. Video editor and teacher for my Telecom department here in Baltimore Maryland. I work for the Baltimore Sun and the Baltimore Development Corporation. I freelance for River Valley Ranch during the summer. There are my credentials, don't talk to me about such irrelevant geek stuff.

bought the new one today

Just picked mine up from the apple store, getting readings between 4:20 and 5:00 hours for battery life (nearly full brightness, surfing the internet).

How? No really, how.

I didn't treat you like an ignorant college student. I expect an equivalent level of professional attitude when making a reply

You are right about the promotions not working, so no free nano, but about Leopard? I called to ask about that and they said I would receive a free copy of Tiger with purchase of a student membership. I asked them if that could be held off until Leopard was available to which they said no. Where did you hear that ADC Student Members would get Leopard for free? (because that would be amazing!)

If I were you I would get the 160 GB 7200 RPM drive, then get something like this with another 7200 rpm 160 GB drive put into it.

FW800 and very portable.

Yup...

I used to edit on an iBook G4 with a 4200rpm drive. But you will have dropped frames and capture, playback and recording... there won't be anyway around it. Even if you get an external drive, FCP won't be able to keep up with the HDD. Get anything that is 5400rpm and above,

Are you using iMovie or FCP? If it is iMovie you shoule be okay... I don't have much experience using iMovie on 4200 rpm drives. If it is FCP or FCX then go for the faster drives.

Should I order this ?

No, the free nano isn't included.

As I understand it, only full ADC Select memberships get the full OS releases. ADC Select Student memberships don't come with that. But I've heard mixed things, so who knows.

You're clearly shopping at the wrong places. (Hint: there's no such thing as Monsters).

HDMI cables are cheap at www.monoprice.com. They work just fine.

As for the MBP, I'm seriously considering it, but I will wait a few weeks to see what's announced at WWDC, and I more than likely will wait until they ship with Leopard. Either that or buy a refurb C2D. My preschool-age (4 years old!) 12" PB can hang on just a little bit longer...

I wasn't talking about HDMI cables, those aren't so bad. What is expensive is trying to convert audio from the 1/8 in stereo mini jacks + DVI from the DVI out port into a single HDMI cable. It should be expensive, but costs several hundred.

Are you positive about that? I had asked the Apple Developer Connection guys about this, and they said software wasn't included with ADC Student memberships.

I'd rather just pay $69 for Leopard (the student price) when it comes out.

Throughout the history of the industry it's always been like this. You've always had to pay a greater price-premium for the high end. The upper mid to lower high end is where the best bang for your buck will be found. However, if you absolutely need the power, you pay the price.
