My total was really weird. on my Order Summary the Estimated Total was $2,666.96 and then the amount that appeared under my Payment Method was $2,647.88. Is this because the estimated tax was wrong or something?

there is something all messed up with apple's pricing today so I would wait until the crazy days end and then call apple to double check in a day or two.

So you use the ADC 20% discount and still got the $200 rebate for the iPod? Hmm this would be an awesome deal if thats what you did.

i don't think so. the price indicated was $2299, which is exactly the price of the 15" 2.4GHz with the standard education discount ($1799, $2299, $2599). the prices from the developer hardware discount store are $1599, $1999, and $2239. (NB: not including $99 cost of student ADC membership)

all indications are that ADC student discount / back-to-school-free-nano promotion are mutually exclusive. so, if you're already an ADC member, use that discount (unless you envision applying it to a pricier machine in the future--it's a once-per-lifetime discount). factoring in a new membership fee, you save $101, $201, or $261 for the three standard configs, so compare that against the $199 ipod rebate, considering how much you really wanted a new ipod before you found out about the promotion. if you want the 2.4GHz 15" or 17", then go ADC membership. if you want the 2.2GHz 15" and wanted a new ipod anyway, then definitely take the regular student discount and promotion.

damn though, i forgot about these reports that even student ADC members get leopard for free. i'm still skeptical, but that's worth considering. i guess the student price of leopard is expected to be $69 like tiger was?

too much arithmetic, but it's really cool to have these discounts.

I actually had the same issue only I ordered mine May 7th. Maybe because I ordered it through my university bookstore they didn't want to ship a student the old version. But now I have to wait 2 more weeks for the new one when I originally wanted it last month. :(

I too ordered mine through a departmental purchase at my university. Well I guess we can't complain, as we are getting a pretty sweet setup. I can survive for 2 more weeks. Maybe it will ship faster than they predict.

Damn!!! No blu-ray drive. or even option of blu-ray drive.

this is kinda lame. For apple to be HDTV backward is ridiculous at this point.

What the heck is going on over there?

also, it's time for a new case.

the only play it would be even useful would be limited to the 17'' b/c of HD. Moreover, the blue ray hd dvd war would really make me reluctant to throw this into my computer. Finally, and most important, do you really need to watch an hd movie on the comp that badly, watch movies as they were meant on big beautiful screens.

i do agree it is time for a new case though, specifically one that CONDUCTS MUCH LESS HEAT, my freaking hands and arms are tired of brushing against the stupid hot notebook.

Should I wait until Leopard?

I've been waiting to buy my first ever macbook pro this upcoming August...my question to the experts is, is it worth waiting until October for the new Leopard to come out? I have read all of the threads about the recent mbp updates but was wondering if Mac usually announces new updates to its laptops when it releases new operating systems? Its such a big investment (as a college student) i want to get the most out of it (considering they offer a free ipod nano as well if you buy before sept. 16th) All advice is appreciated!

Newly OC about Mac

I don't understand why you need to wait to week? does your school not have them in? or what's the deal? why not just use edu discount on apple.com and get it in 3 days.

Latest, yes. Greatest, no. I'm sure everyone would have loved to see a mobile 8800 variant in the high-end, but considering that would infringe on the Mac Pro, Apple wouldn't have done it at any price. Just wait for that as a built-to-order in 6 months or so...

If you mean the 15" model, there's no way the 8800M (which won't even be available for a few more months) would work well in it....... it's going to be limited to 17" machines across the board.

If you meant the 17" MBP as the high-end, I am not so sure the 8800M would work well in a 1" thin chassis.

Speaking of messed-up pricing, the Apple Canada online store is still reflecting the old exchange rate. The Canadian prices of the MBPs should only be 6% above the U.S. price at the current exchange rate, but they are 11% above. Worse than that, the Canadian price of upgrades is 20-25% above the American price. So a maxed out 17" in Canada costs $200 more in U.S. dollars than in does in the U.S.

I thought Apple Canada fixed this problem!

Buy the new mac today and get Leopard later. I don't think Apple will update the MacBook Pro again this year. Next time it will probably be updated at MacWorld 2008 with Penryn and some other new stuff.

No, don't wait for Leopard. I doubt they'll be releasing another update to the MBP so soon. Frankly, this new computer is fantastic. Save up for Leopard and buy it when it comes out.

I was all excited until I noticed no XP drivers for the vid card. Sigh, looks like I will have to wait longer to see what happens with this since there is no way I am going to vista.

Not so fast. 8700M GT just came out. :p

http://labs.pcw.co.uk/2007/05/nvidia_geforce_.html

This is a higher-power chip and unlikely to ever be used by Apple in a 1" thin notebook.

Note that Clevo is a 17" machine as well; I'm not so sure when we'll be seeing the 8700M in any 15" notebooks (note that Asus chose the 8600M for their G1S, even though even that machine is considerably thicker and heavier than a MBP).

also thought i'd point out that you should check your customized configuration in both education and developer stores. the developers' hardware upgrades are cheaper ($15 cheaper for harddrive, $75 for ram (but really, who buys apple's ram upgrades?)) but the software add-ons and applecare are way more expensive.

I know that Vista can be a pain in the butt, but you can trim it down to make it look and work almost the same as XP. You can turn off the annoying 'confirm' dialogues and everything. It's not so bad.

Does anyone think this is the end-of-life for this design? I've had my Powerbook for 4 years now and returned a 15" MBP a year ago because of the screen tilt. Now I don't know to wait another 6-8 months for MAYBE a re-designed, or buy now and learn to live with it.

If it was a personal purchase I wouldn't care, but it's a work laptop so I have to keep it for 3 years.

My prediction is we'll see a big update to the MBP at MacWorld '08.

yeah totally. and I don't think Leopard will even cost too much anyway.

cant tell you the performance of the 7200 that apple use but i'd say the 5400 rpm drive there is good enough to not have to wait 4-6 weeks

are we looking at the same stats? from what i see, the one high-capacity (160GB) SATA 7200rpm drive way outperforms everything else. all the other 7200rpm drives are either 100 or 80GB, many of them ATA not SATA. not a fair comparison.

it would be interesting though to see the tests repeated when the drives are half full and nearly full to capacity.

i think i'll wait, myself... at least on the plus side it will give me a chance to cancel my order if the new LED displays all burst into flames after two weeks.

Battery data

Pretty heavy use (installing XP...please don't throw anything at me!) and browsing and so forth...normal power saving mode...8% battery left after almost 2 and a half hours of use. Not bad, compared to my old one :) I'm sure it could have gone way better just browsing or turning the brightness down, but I wanted to see what the minimum would be.

This on a 2.4 GHz 15", by the way. Say, I noticed that on the battery it says "Li-ion," but online it says these have lithium polymer batteries. Does anyone know what the deal is? Lithium ion and lithium polymer are different technologies, I don't know why they would name them so confusingly if they meant something else.

anyway, it looks like the same square battery form factor, it's 40 watt hours. Can anyone lend some insight?

come on

Note that Clevo is a 17" machine as well; I'm not so sure when we'll be seeing the 8700M in any 15" notebooks (note that Asus chose the 8600M for their G1S, even though even that machine is considerably thicker and heavier than a MBP).

come on, people, are we REALLY comparing CLEVO to Apple? I sold thousands of Clevo's last year alone, ONLY because they have the highest specs out on the market the quickest. But lemme tell you how many of them we hadta fix....HORRIBLE Quality Control!

Quit comparing specs, and be happy knowing that quality-wise, you're getting the best. 100% mindset knowing that your hardware configuration has been rigorously tested.

I called Apple earlier and was told that the ADC discount could be combined with the Nano offer. Plus get a free Leopard upgrade in the fall ;)
