Very nice updates!!! 2 GB of RAM as a standard is extremely cool. Also the new LED displays and upgraded graphics are really nice, as well. Hopefully this makes a lot of people happy. :)

i was on the apple website comparing specs of the complete laptop range does the mac book pro really have a slower super drive than the blackbook and specked up white book?

on the spec comparisons it says the black book carries an 8x double layer superdrive where as the pro's only have a 6x speed drive will this make alot of difference?

cheers

Got one today

Picked up a 2.2GHz MacBook Pro today at the Apple Store in Meadowhall (Sheffield - UK).. they said I was the first one to buy one there! (which considering I got there at 7pm is a really bad showing on Mac geeks in the area ;-)).

I'm really surprised how many people are buying the 15" 2.4.. it's the biggest rip off ever. It's £300 more ($600) than the 2.2.. and all you get is slightly faster CPU (barely) and a slightly bigger hard drive? That's not worth an extra 25% on the price, surely? So I'm happy with the 2.2 ;-)

LCD screen is VERY bright, but nothing amazing it seems. If I put a black image at the bottom of the screen and tilt to look from above it still looks light down there (like with my PowerBook).. seems fishy, but blacks are pretty rich, so I'm guessing it's all okay.

Seem to be using about 24% of battery per hour.. so 4 hours is probably about right.. alternating between full brightness and low brightness though.. no music, limited wireless use.. we'll see.

It's nice and quiet, getting nowhere near as hot as the PowerBook.. good price (if you get the 2.2).. so thumbs up so far.

Congrats! I think the people are getting the 2.4 because of more vRAM.

The laptop itself is a very sweet deal :p

The thing is my almost three years old PBG4 is still working fine, except the backlight of the screen is broken so I have to use an external monitor -_-. But still spending another $2000 is not that easy for me....

I called Apple earlier and was told that the ADC discount could be combined with the Nano offer. Plus get a free Leopard upgrade in the fall ;)

maybe this can only be done over the phone? i can't make the rebate offer show up when i'm in the developer store. another possible explanation is that i haven't done the whole "fax your course schedule to us" enrollment confirmation thing yet, but i doubt it. i'm still skeptical, though, of both those claims, since i haven't seen them in writing anywhere. but when i decide to buy i'll sure give it a try!

This new MBP also has 8x double layer superdrives across the range. So there's nothing for you to worry about :)

Do it! Do it! Do it!

Now, how do I convince the wife to let me buy one?

This morning I tried subliminal tactics. I SMS'd her:

I've taken the chicken macbook out of the freezer macbook. How many pieces macbook do we need for dinner macbook?

I wish they made the 1900 x 1200 pixel resolution on the 17" MacBook Pro standard, not an option. Other than that, it looks like a good update to the MacBook Pros. Now, just the iMacs and a "true" Mac Pro update.

Not possible yet. You need resolution independence (available in Leopard, and software needs adapting), or many people won't be happy at all with 1900 x 1200 pixel.

Let me know how it goes. I was told from a number of people that ADC does not work with back to school promotions.

And twice the video ram......

even still. Today's update increased the gap between the 2 models, and it wasn't really all that big to begin with (ever since the MBP came out). Twice the video RAM will make a tiny (under 5% I'm sure) difference unless you're using a 30" or spanning to some other large external. The extra HD space is good, if you need it, but a lot of people don't, and it's a cheap upgrade for those who do. As for the 200 mhz, it's not nothing, but as a percentage, it doesn't mean much. The biggest upside to the high end model (at least for me) was always that it had twice the RAM (512 vs. 1 GB on the core duo and 1 GB vs. 2 GB on the core2duo).

I'm not saying the high-end is a bad deal (it's not, compared to other laptop offerings), but IMO the low-end is now an excellent deal.

Ahh, she's just replied:

"I'm surprised you haven't bought one already".

Hmm, what could this mean? Is that a yes, or a no?

That's interesting. Since the resolution hasn't been increased on the 15", I'd be wanting to hook it up to my 24" monitor @1920x1200. Do you think the 128Mb would handle that?

My HP laptop has an ATI x600 with 128Mb and it managed Half Life 2 at 1920x1200, so I can only guess that the new 8600M could do it...

Hi can someone be as kind to explain me the pros and cons of the Glossy screen. I heard there will be some glare in bright light areas like maybe in a car? Which Im not really feeling. My sister has a Mac Book Pro she bought in May 06 and it has the Mat like material and it seems fine. Is there a huge difference btween the two im so confused on which one to get. I know the Glossy has a better color look but I dont know how this glare will be is really noticable any help would be great.

I totally agree with that. It's a steal, especially considering the 2GB!

Oh yeah, I forgot about the VRAM difference. I imagine it will only be of relevance to people with gigantic displays, etc, or gamers.. but to be honest, I couldn't think of anything worse to game on than a Mac or a notebook.. got desktops for all those shenanigans :) Would double the VRAM be useful for people doing general desktop work on a 30"? I'm not sure.. but I guess if you're forking out for a 30" display, another £300/$600 on the price is probably not going to scare you away ;-)

I went for it to make my lappy last longer. This laptop will see me through leopard and onto the 10.6 i hope so i think its wise to go with 256 instead of 128.

If your upgrading every year then yeah go for the low end 15"

I think I may sell my blackbook and wait a little while and then get one of these. 2GB standard is great. This spec and ipod nano for 1799 is really a sweet deal(education discount)

When u use 2 screens, it splits the video card evenly between the 2. Unless you are talking about using it with the screen closed.

I'm sure it could handle it. I bet it would not be *quite* as great as with the 256 VRAM, but it should still chew up HL2 easily. I would close the lid of the MBP and just use the external while you're playing though...
