To summarise....

Some questions to see if we have a consensus:
  1. Why isn't the MBPs using a 800MHz memory bus? Will it be released later?
  2. When is the consensus for 17" LED backlighting to be released?
  3. Will the 17" high-res screen be difficult to read until Leopard's resolution independence is available? Can you change the size of system fonts?
  4. Will the 250Gb disc be dog slow compared with the standard 160Gb disc (17")?
  5. What's the likely battery life of the 17" compared with the 15.4"?
Just wondered if it's worth jumping now or waiting for a bit longer!

200GB option on 15" but not the 17"??

Did y'all notice that you can get a 200GB drive in the 15" with BTO but the 17"'s options are only 160/5400, 160/7200 or 250/4200? That is interesting...

Intel's Santa Rosa Platform is limited to 667MHz memory. Montevina is supposed to come out sometime in 2008. It will support 800mhz memory, but no one knows if it will be DDR2 or DDR3.

Well according to an article on Extreme Tech, DDR3 memory will cost nearly 3 times what DDR2 costs.

Just like DDR2 costed twice as much as DDR did when it first came out. DDR3 should require less power and run at much much higher clock rate (see graphics card memory running at an effective rate of 2ghz).

I know it has been asked but not answered:

Can anyone confirm that the new 17" MBP can be found in the Apple Retail stores? And if so, do they have any of the High Res Screens or just the standard screens?

Thanks

It 's been answered. Apparently Apple is not stocking the 17" hi-res screen, so you can only get it online. You can buy the new 17" in stores just not with a hi-res screen.

MacUser4_20: Not sure about that but I've just placed an order in the UK over the phone for a Hi-Res 17" (Glossy) MBP with the 7400 rpm 160 GB HD and I've had a confirmation email telling me to expect shipping on or before 12th June and delivery on or before 22nd June.

I'm sure that when I checked yesterday the website was quoting 4-6 weeks.

I'm wetting my pants!:D

So it's not the leading edge notebook...

Exactly. That's why there is NO ONE ahead of the MBP now (a 1-inch notebook)...thank you very much

It's just the best one can find in a 1" form factor, not an unqualified leader.

Sounds like all the Apple-double-talk about the PMG5 being the "first 64-bit desktop" - because all the other 64-bit machines already on peoples' desktops were "workstations, not desktops".

So the best 4lb notebook would be something else, since the MBP is so heavy?

Obviously there are different market segments for different types of laptops. I think the new MBP is remarkable though for the performance it offers among mainstream 15.4" laptops while being only 1" thick and 5.4 pounds though.

I don't see a reason to get hung up over the fact that there are different classes of laptops. The "best" 4 pound notebook is obviously going to be very different in terms of components, etc..... and the best 17" high-end gaming laptop would be very different as well. But they all have different purposes.

The nice thing about the MBP is that it is perhaps the leader in the mainstream though; ultraportables often require sacrifices in terms of power, screen size, keyboard, etc. and high-end 17" gaming laptops require sacrifices in battery life, weight, size, etc.

The 15.4" laptop category has become mainstream because it offers the most to the largest category of laptop buyers; and the new MBP is great for this because it is one of the lightest and thinnest and most powerful 15.4" laptops available.

160gb or 200gb??

Hey everyone - I know I want a 15" MBP, but am unsure about the hard drive - I think 200 gb is probably better for moy requirements than 160gb, but I noticed the speed is slower.
What are the implications of this, and will it have a noticeable effect??
Thanks

alright... maybe a silly question, maybe not... im curious;

is this revision 'more' 64-bit capable than the previous incarnation!? or is there a negligible difference between the two?

if a lot is good, a little is better

Anybody waiting for a 13" MBP is just crazy IMO. Apple does the compact, portable, lower powered Macbooks, and the more powerful, professional Macbook Pros which need the larger screens for video/design work. I just can't see where a 13" fits in.

i think it fits in precisely because there are so many of us waiting for it! it's true that compared to what i've been using for the past 3 years, the macbook would be only slightly larger and a whole lot more powerful, but a lot of us just don't like the idea of buying an under-powered machine when there's a lot of number-crunching to be done. but if you use a dual display system at home/office, then the petite size of a 12" computer makes it an absolute joy to carry around, use in meetings, etc.

i wonder if there's a 12" powerbook fan club... there should be! seems like there would be a lot of members, at least among the macrumors crowd.

Well, I was seriously considering buying the new MBP... that is until I saw this...

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/06/intel-talks-up-3-series-chipset-core-2-extreme-cpu-for-laptops/

Now what?! Do I wait another 6 months?

I was a little concerned on how long the Intel Core 2 Duo has been out.

Thoughts?

You can wait 6 months if you want to, but there will always be something better coming out. It's inevitable. Buy a computer when you absolutely need one.

Damn! I'm too slow

1. Intel has had the Extreme series for laptops announced for months now.
2. I wouldn't expect a quad core in the MacBook Pro form factor
3. There isn't going to be an architectural change in Intel chips until Nehalem in late 2008.

Hmm... so maybe I should buy.

Can Intel pull off another 400mhz thermally as it is? 35W is supposed to be the TDP for the current procs. Is the X-series procs gonna raise that to 45 or even 55W?

I agree! The 12" PB occupied the same relative slot in the lineup (b/t iBook and 15" PowerBook) that a new ultraportable would.

I've been holding onto hope for one ever since they released the new MBP line, and I'll never give up!

Sooo, in response to the above, I just ordered the MBP 17" with the HiRes screen along with 4GB RAM and the 7200RPM hard drive. From what I understand, this is not configurable in the store itself. I processed my order on the phone and the Apple guy told me that the "4-6 week" would probably be more like 2-3 (which still SUCKS but oh well).

Everyone seems to really be going after the LED screens and there's not much mention of how much more real estate the HiRes 17" will offer...the idea of having multiple windows open with no overlap is really appealing to me in terms of productivity, but now I'm starting to second guess myself after reading all of the hype on how much longer the LED screens will maintain their brightness.
Any thoughts here? Any hands-on comments on the 17" HiRes screen yet??

Great Mac. You will love it.

I order always the largest internal drive even so it is only 4200 rpm. I just hate file management in a way that I always have to look what to delete. Not that 250 gig is enough but it reduces the problem.

And you get RAM elsewhere much cheaper.

The only thing I would disagree with in that purchase is the memory upgrade. You can always upgrade Apple memory for half the price with aftermarket memory. I checked Crucial and 4 GB of memory would run you about $360 and Apple charges like $700 for the upgrade. Besides that your setup sounds awesome!!
