For what it's worth... I don't often use my MagSafe charger, because 1. it's too slow, and 2. it gets too hot. I dug it out of my desk and plugged it in my MBP after seeing this article. The firmware # changed within about two minutes, and I left it attached to the phone. Miraculously, it didn't get nearly as hot while charging. If that's the change it brought, great!

Can someone else confirm this for me? Does this remove the matching color animation if you have an official Apple case? I have the Product Red silicone case on my iPhone 12 Pro and I don't see a red ring when you charge it; I see a green ring.

Isn't the charging ring always green, or red when the battery is really low?

As far as I know, the matching color animation is only when you put on the case...not when charging. (I've got a blue case, the ring was never blue when charging.)

Appreciate the response. You are right!

Much like the ongoing debate going on about the charger's usefulness, I'm in the category of hardly using it; I prefer plugging the phone in. I wanted to upgrade the firmware and forgot what the old behavior of the ring color was.

updated from 174.0.0.0 to 247.0.0.0, I can't see any differents, same charge animation and same charge time. I use my magSafe charger everyday and My iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn't gets hot at all.

Well, I had no idea these would update.

I have two, that we bought nearly day one - so they’re as old as they come.

They’ve only ever been plugged into their power bricks beside the bed and one of them has updated and one of the has not.

On one side of the bed I am still at 174, but the other side of the bed is 247.

So they will update without a connection to a computer.

What I don’t know is why one of mine updated and the other one is not…

Although reading through these comments it looks like 174 version even means that it has updated at least once since we got them.

Again - they’ve never been plugged in to computers.

Let’s hope something magical happened and I won’t be hearing that annoying noise every time I put my iPhone to charge. Let’s just hope.

Mine still stuck at 174.0.0.0 and has been attached to my iMac and iPhone for 10 minutes

HOW CAN I LIVE WITH AN OUTDATED FIRMWARE

Same here. And I am very interested in the update, because I use a MagSafe charger in my car and when I use navigation software while charging, the phone gets really hot. In the summer it even shut down once, so cooler charging would be great.

Left another 20 minutes charger + phone on the usb-c 20w charger, still nothing

such a sad day

off I go trying to upgrade the AirPods Pro firmware now

Hilarious how this is way easier than AirPods. Connected it to my iPad and after a minute it went from 147 to 247. You can’t charge from the ipad but sure can update the firmware.

Mine didn't update until I connected the charger directly to my iPad Mini 6. - I unlocked to be able to: Use accessory's

I next put my phone on to charge - which it didn't, didn't even register the magnetic attachment.

5 minutes later I unplugged from my iPad and connected back to the power socket. Phone removed & attached again via Magsafe - checked back in Settings, General, About and I'm updated to 247.0.0.0

Happy the iPad works - I'll get the unit in my car updated this afternoon!

A charger getting a firmware update?! Man!, we are doing something wrong with the tech.

On the other hand, who was assigned this Embarrassing work of creating/updating firmware for a charger? :D

My MagSafe is at 174.0.0.0 With this firmware update, any heating issues might be resolved. Don’t know when it will update. But it seems as if connecting it to Mac should cause it to update.

This made me curious about the charging puck for my Apple Watch 7. With the Watch on the charger and logged in (must be in vertical orientation, not sideways, and click the dial) I went into Setting > General > About and scrolled to the very bottom. Sure enough there was a button for Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable. Tapping it took me to the info where the firmware was 1.1.0. No idea if that has or will ever change.
