Personally, I would have versioned this update 256.0.0.0 because I am a weirdo and 255.0.0.0 looks like a subnet mask.
I must be a weirdo too, when I saw that I thought that was a weird subnet mask and just why would it have anything to do with a charger!

A macOS virtual machine from within Windows will work too. I used a macOS 11 Big Sur VM in VMWare Workstation on Windows 11, it got the update within 1 minute of plugging it in.

doesnt matter which imac or macbook pro i connect it too reboot plug it in or out phone off phone on it. no update 247.0.0.0

Mine is still on 174.0.0.0, possibly because my Mac is staying on Catalina for now? I also haven't updated any devices to iOS 16 yet. If it depends on the latest software then I'll be behind for a while...

The year is 2022. The portable handheld computers chargers have mini computers inside them. What a time to be alive

I assume the update may have something to do with clean energy charging as that option is unavailable in australia and there has not been a 255 firmware update for MagSafe yet.

If the update is not happening on your charger, do a hard reset on your iPhone with the MagSafe charger on. It sorted it instantly for me, which makes me wonder if the update was already installed, but just not showing.

A few final thoughts on my counterfeit MagSafe charger situation:

I reached out to Woot, who were apologetic, but since I've had it >90 days, they could only offer me $10 off my next purchase. Not the best, but not the worst solution.

Literally the only visible difference between real/fake is the etching on the puck-end where the wire attaches. The fake doesn't have the symbols and "R-NZ" etching. Everything else including serial number on the cord, material quality and packaging is spot-on (well I no longer have the counterfeit packaging, but it would fool anyone without a genuine one side-by-side).

And finally, I bought a new one to replace my counterfeit. Plugging it into my MacBook Pro for about 2 minutes did force-update the new charger's firmware from 174 to 255.

Nope didn’t work for me. A hard reset being quick volume up/down hold sleep button until Apple logo appears. Still on 247

Thanks for the info! I also got my charger from Woot (and was suspicious when it came in a ziploc bag instead of Apple packaging). But it works fine, shows up properly in the iPhone info, and it did update. It also has this engraving. So I guess I got a genuine article.

its very easy fake chargers are so much slower than the real thing they only pull 5 watts. Also the build quality and finish is less

I plugged mine into my MacBook Air and at first it did nothing so I went away and was doing other things when I heard it my phone chime maybe five minutes later.

It definitely works better with this new firmware!…

Seriously though I would like to know exactly what it does and how this update happens without connecting it to a MacBook. Clearly there has to be data capabilities with MagSafe if it can update the firmware.
