I’m really hoping for a 10% bump in processing speed. Maybe next year they can put the A14 chip in it.

The real question is how does MacRumors know there is a new firmware for a charger?

Here's the file your iPhone downloads to check for updates of the MagSafe Duo charger: https://mesu.apple.com/assets/com_apple_MobileAsset_UARP_A2458/com_apple_MobileAsset_UARP_A2458.xml

A2458 is the charger's model number. UARP is Apple's "Universal Accessory Restore Protocol". I regularly watch more than 500 of those files for changes. I don't know if MacRumors looks at my monitoring, someone else does and tips off MacRumors, or if they do their own monitoring for changes ;)

Your iPhone will automatically install the update on the charging pad wirelessly at some point, or you can plug it to a Mac, which for other MagSafe devices has been previously reported to update it faster.

Wirelessly? Via Bluetooth? Can’t be Wi-Fi because it never appears on my router.

I have this, ... very .... exciting... strange world we are living in that charger now have firmware. haha

Those who think this is a silly product, guess you don't travel much with a small laptop bag.

But given how often firmware fails, it should be called software. Oh wait, that term in already in use.

Maybe it's the super low bandwidth radio link between phone and charger (normally used for the charger to know when a device was connected, how much power it wants, when it finished charging, etc). Which could mean it takes a long time for the update to actually transfer to the charger :D

My magsafe duo works great with my Apple Watch Ultra.

🤷‍♂️
I believe it is a problem for the Ultra when it uses a strap that doesn’t allow the watch to sit flat on the charger like the Milanese loop or a solo loop.

Because someone asked earlier about how to force the update - I left the Magsafe Duo plugged into my Macbook Pro for a couple of hours and it won't update the firmware. Also had left my iPhone on it overnight before and still shows the same old firmware (even after restarting the phone). Guess it's the usual waiting game with Apple's "automatic" firmware updates you don't have any control over (or information on what's actually been improved).

The update went ok and was quick. But now the watch charger is on the left (was on the right before) and the charge port is at the front (was at the back). Has anybody else noticed this? Is this supposed to be an improvement?

I thought that wasn't supposed to be implemented until April 1.

My Ultra and iPhone 14 Max, with Apple leather case, work just fine with the Duo. It is super convenient for traveling. Both my wife and I own one for the sheer convenience. Worth every penny.
My phone (13 Pro with clear plastic apple case) doesn't sit properly on the charger, but it still works and is very convenient.

Oh I do even own a dual nor did I know it even existed. So a charger has firmware oh well maybe it is redundant as I have enough charger cables laying around all over my house. Just seems to be the case of yep it exists but really not needed

I will try, but I did this several times with the magsafe charging puck and it never updated. Only after using it regularly to charge my iPhone it updated, but after maybe several weeks of using it.

A few things:
- This charging mat/pad/thing has a firmware?
- How the hell do you update the firmware of a charging pad?
- Why does it need a firmware update anyway?
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Apple‘s Polishing Cloth had a firmware. Would it justify its price? Na.
