Then people should learn to say what they mean.

80 GB is a quite useful hard drive size for many people.

Keep in mind that for most professional users, you're going to store most of your data on the server and not on your computer. If you're storing data on the server, 80GB is way more than enough.

I'm not disputing the utility of an 80GB drive. I was just trying to explain the original post. I do think, however, that 80GB is rather puny for a prosumer system. Not useless, not at all. Just small compared to other systems in its class.

Yes, the single 1.6 wasn't the greatest machine ever - but I was thinking about getting a desktop, and while slightly above my price range, I think I could have pulled it off (combo rather than superdrive). Now, with the cheapest machine at 1999, there's no way I'm getting a G5.

I may stick to my iBook and build a decent x86 PC to go with it, for 1/3 of the price.

Price drop on Rev. A refurbs at Apple Store: 1.6 is 1299, dual 1.8 is 1799, and dual 2.0 is 1999.

This is a good one : you consider Macs to be an "upper class" product only, do you.

Anyway, I don't agree at all, as Apple computers are (except for the case) made up out of exactly the same components as PC's, be it with different drivers (which cost money to develop too, I admit).

If Apple, at the current price point, doens't make any profits, they should make a proper cost analysis and restructure the company : these prices are getting too rediculous....

Well this is obciously a guy who never bought an LCII for 2500 beans.

Those prices were ridiculous, these prices are reasonable

Video card changes after changing HDD Size

After buying my PowerMac Dual 1.8 I got the following specs

Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
512MB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x256
80GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
8x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon 9600 XT w/128MB DDR SDRAM
Bluetooth Module
AirPort Extreme Card

But then I wanted to change the HDD to 160GB and I called Apple and now my order looks like this:

Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5
512MB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x256
160GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
8x SuperDrive (DVD-R/CD-RW)
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro w/128MB DDR SDRAM
Bluetooth Module
AirPort Extreme Card

So the ATI Radeon went from an 9600 XT to a 9600 Pro....

Is there a difference and is this something I should call them for and have corrected?

I just want to get what I paid for and it is my first Mac, ever, so I want it to be good.

Thanks

GOD!!! I want to buy a 2.5 so bad, but not the old display- if you don't buy them together, no Applecare on the screen. Does anyone else think that's ridiculous that you can't get a warranty policy just on the screen? Now MORE waiting. WHERE ARE THE DISPLAYS, APPLE?

I ordered a Dual 2.5 without display, and they told me if I order the display within the next couple weeks, they should be able to put AppleCare on the display as well.

I would call and have it corrected. I just tried the same upgrade and didn't have the same glitch. The XT is slightly faster in real world performance from what I have read.

Unrelated, but still on topic, I thought I read that with the new G5 lineup the single G4 PowerMac was getting dropped, but it is still listed at the Applestore. Anyone?

I believe that they said they would take orders until the stock was depleted.

I don't know what will happen if you order one and they run out. My guess would be that they'd cancel the order, but you never know- you might get a G5 instead.

I think I read that Apple has just stopped making the G4 towers this week so they will probably be trying to sell off their remaining stock over the coming weeks to make way for the G5s in the warehouses. The G4 is old technology for a Powermac and I think that most users will be buying the G5s now and if the G5 iMacs are launched soon, the G4 will only remain in the iBooks and Powerbooks and will do for the forseeable future.

Just curious but what are you using 4 pci slots for?

I have a recording studio business and run a 3-card Pro Tools HD3 system and a SCSI card for a DDS4 tape backup. I also am a hobbyist in 3D animation (Lightwave) and video editing so I am looking to get a G5. I will still need my SCSI tape backup for now, so I plan to keep my G4 800 with the SCSI card, network it and let it handle running the backups. I would love to be rid of SCSI as I use Firewire for everything else, but I have a large library of tape backups and some clients that regularly need to revise old projects.

I was elated when I bought my G4 being that they added a fourth slot and I no longer needed the giant $1,200 7-slot PCI expansion chassis that I was using with my G3. I wish they would bring back the fourth slot again. I'll manage with three, but two is not enough.

What's the benefit of the 90 nm chips in the 1.8?

I can get an old 2.0 machine for 1800 bucks and a new 1.8 for 1700 (educational pricing). Are the new 90 nm chips worth getting the 1.8 which is a lesser machine in speed and ram and hardrive and buss?

I called the Apple Store and they said that it was still the 9600 XT. It did have the same serial number so I am convinced too, and the 9600 Pro isn't offered in any of the rev b PM's anyways so I hope I wouldn't get the 9600 Pro...

Where can you get an old 2.0 for $1800? It is a much better machine than the new 1.8. In addition to the faster proc's and system bus it also has PCI-X vs. PCI slots and space for more RAM. Add to that no one is even sure yet if the new 1.8 and 2.0 have 90nm chips, we will have to wait for some one to get one and open it up.

what ibm does is take the G5 chips and rub them on the carpet for 5 min. that makes them faster. all you G5 owners should try. :p

We Think That Only The 2.5 GHz Processors Are 90 nm

We Think That Only The 2.5 GHz Processors Are 90 nm. That seems to be the conventional wisdom here. Am I not correct? If you can get a stock dual 2 for $1800, you better do that ASAP. Where? How?

My original order confirmation email from Apple also says 9600 XT, but the follow-up says 9600 Pro.

It doesn't appear from ATI's site that they make the XT for the Mac, so it appears to be just a typo on Apple's part.

They are making 90nm G5 chips in quantity (X-Serves)...you just have to wonder if they are using that chip for the new 2.0 Power Mac.

As for the 1.8, who knows?

Repost because my post drowned on page 20

Just a little OT

Now that the new G5's have come out what would I get for a dual 450 with 1.12 gigs of ram, pci scsi card, and 330 gigs of hd? Curious as I am looking to upgrade my slowest machine? Could also leave FCP 3.0/DVD 2.0/PS 6/AE prod 5.0 on it. thanks

my question never got a chance to survive :D

G5 update is disappointing

I can understand that Apple was unable to get 3.0 GHz. on the PPC, but I don't understand the lack of other improvements to this update. I really hoped there would be improvements in number of bays, another optical bay, video cards and especially the price. I know some of this has already been commented on, but Apple's lack of response to consumer wants and needs is beginning to feel a whole lot like Microsoft.

don't buy a G5 then. too many people bitch about apples updates not having this or that.. if you don't like apples products then don't buy them!

I would be interesed in knowing myself, since I have a Mac very similar.

Apple OEMs the 9600XT from ATI. It's Not Gonna Be On Their Site.

Go to ebay.com. Click on search. Enter relevant information (such as "G4"). Preferably, click on 'show only completed auctions).

Those are real life prices that people have actually paid for Macs. Remember that the seller gets a few percent less due to eBay fees.
