I can understand that Apple was unable to get 3.0 GHz. on the PPC, but I don't understand the lack of other improvements to this update. I really hoped there would be improvements in number of bays, another optical bay, video cards and especially the price. I know some of this has already been commented on, but Apple's lack of response to consumer wants and needs is beginning to feel a whole lot like Microsoft.

What do you need another optical bay for?

What do you do that requires 256 mb of VRAM?

What are you filling those bays with?

The pricing is great.

My original order confirmation email from Apple also says 9600 XT, but the follow-up says 9600 Pro.

It doesn't appear from ATI's site that they make the XT for the Mac, so it appears to be just a typo on Apple's part.

-d

I believe that the 9600XT and 9800XT were introduced as part of the new G5 lineup, but as of right now, they are availible OEM only and as such not listed on ATi's website.

Who says macs are too expensive? Bare bones Config. one can upgrade as necessary when neccessary. I'd like to see someone build a 64 bit Dual Proccessor PC themselves with all new Parts (no cheating with recycled parts) for under $1500. Flat out impossible when even the Cheapest Opterons and Xenon CPU's all cost over $300 a piece even the older ones.

Has to be, thats a great price! I can only get it down to 1709 with edu price. :(

Yeah, Little Endian, what kind of discount are you getting. Without one, it comes to $1870 for an identical set-up. The only way to cut the price is to drop the modem and sub combo for superdrive.

I just went to the apple store and they have refurbished dual 2.0 for 2499 same as a new one so where did you pull up that $1999

SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM WHERE IT SAYS REFURBISHED DUAL 2s, not at the top where they are selling old stock.

old dual 1.8

the old dual 1.8 g5 with pci-x with 8gb ram space, with 512 stock is available for $1799 brand new at local apple stores, check it out.

XT or PRO????

While all things EXCEPT my bill of sale point to the XT cards from ATI in the new G5s.... my bill of sale sale it is a PRO card.

Apple claims there are no pro card option for the dual 2.5gig G5's so I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope that they really are XT models (despite ATI claiming there are not XT's for Mac)....

Anyone else concerned? I trust Apple - but they also claim that the new Macs will ship in July... but now that is Aug 2nd.

Either way - having an order number brings me joy!

new/outdated vs referb

Thanks, interesting they show dual 2.0 twice on same page with 2 different prices.

The $2500 model is new but old style - site claims it is a referb Apple told me otherwise.... farther down is the referb model for $2000

One is an old model, unused that is the $2499, the other is a refurb (probably a returned/open box model) and that saves you $1999. Since both come with Applecare anyhow, there is no real advantage to the $2499 model.

ps. Did you buy one?

The G5 white paper clearly states that all 3 new G5s have 90 nm chips.

An IT World article clearly states that they don't.

Link

So who are we going to believe -- Apple, or the journalists?

If the IT World article is correct, Apple needs to issue a clarification for the benefit of customers who think they're getting the new 970FX 90-nm chip in new dual 1.8 and dual 2.0 G5s, but aren't.

Unhappy with the price of the Mac still

I was hoping that the 1.8 gig stayed in the same config with a Video card and a burner update and that it would replace the low-end 1.6 at that price point. $2499 here in Canada. It didn't. now it's $2799 for a scaled down 1.8 and $3499 for the 2Gig

:(

Also I have read a few posts about "you can't get an equal Pc for the price"
I have had to price out a dual AMD for a print server.
MS Windows XP Pro $212
Thermaltake Xaser V Damier w/ 420W PSU $248
LG 4082B 8X DVD+/-R / 4X DVD+/-RW Black $116
Opteron 246 2.0 GHz RETAIL Box $689
Opteron 246 2.0 GHz RETAIL Box $689
Maxtor 160GB w/ 8MB cache $149
Logitech Cordless MX Duo $95
M SI K8T Master2 FAR K8T800, Dual CPU $315
PC3200 DDR400 512MBx2 CAS2.5 (OCZ4001024PDC-K) $339
MSI GeForce FX5200-TD128 128MB DDR w/ TV-Out $89
Total =$2937
Not to start a flame because we all know the Mac OS is much, much better. But at a hardware level this machine is faster, yes faster then the 2 gig mac and about $600 cheaper. Remember Apple likes to compare there sytems to Intel and not the 64 bit AMD. Now "if" I had the money I would buy the mac but I have seen people time and time again go for the cheaper product. Also if your a UNIX user and not interested in all the "extra" stuff you get with OS X what are you going to chose.

Sorry for the rant I'm just pissed the Dual 1.8 specs went down (PCI-X) and the price point went up from the old bottom-end config. Guess I'll have to wait longer to upgrade the I thought.

I cancelled my 2.5 order and bought a 2 gig for 1999. you can't beat that deal. I will upgrade to 3 gig when they come out this Jan / Feb. The 2.5 will lose alot of value too quickly I think.

Plastic case, crappy OS, slower proc.

Where do we start?

Your machine is faster? Let's see:
Dual G5/2.0 vs. dual Opteron 2.0. I haven't seen any evidence that yours is faster.
Yours has ATA hard drive, G5 has SATA.
Yours has GeForce 5200 vs ATI 9600 in the dual G5/2.0
Yours has 400 MHz Bus vs 1.0 GHz bus in the G5 (I think).
Yours has no optical drive vs Superdrive in the Mac.

Cheaper?
Yours is $2937. The G5/2.0 is $3499 canadian.

Given that:
1. Yours has no optical drive
2. Mac OS X is vastly superior to Windows XP
3. By most tests the G5 will be faster
4. You get a bucket of parts while the G5 is a finished, guaranteed, assembled computer
5. You're going to spend time assembling and testing and if something goes wrong, you get 10 vendors all pointing fingers at each other.
6. You're going to pay shipping 10 times on all those components while the PowerMac is shipped free.

When you consider all those things, the savings (if any) just aren't worth it. Thanks for proving the point.
