9838 error

1st post ever

Please let me know if anyone gets from this screen to a perfectly working iPhone version 2.0

Yes! I finally got it to work! I went from that Error 9838 to simply unplugging the iPhone, quitting iTunes (and all other open apps), to plugging back in the iPhone (which automatically re-opened iTunes) and then I was able to proceed from the new iPhone activation screen. The downside is that it seemed to think my iPhone was new, so it lost all of the photos, music, video, etc. that I had on it before the firmware update. So, I chose "Restore from backup" to reactivate my iPhone (DON'T choose "New iPhone Activation"), and now I'm re-syncing with iTunes to copy over all of the media, contacts, AND NEW APPLICATIONS!!! It's still syncing now, but it finally seems to be working!

I got stuck waiting for my original iphone to call home after upgrading to 2.0. I uninstalled iTunes 7.7 and then went back to Apple's download site to download and reinstall. Guess what - 7.7 looks to have been pulled. I can't download iTunes at all right now. Link is broke.

Download.com have a link for 7.7, i downloaded it in 3 mins

Ejected and reconnected my iPhone. Phone is finally activated. Now, waiting for it to allow for me to put my files back on.

Update: Activation and backup restore complete. I'm in business now.

Went from here to restoring phone from back up

Worked For Me!!

Quoted from apple boards:THis worked for me just now (Friday, 10:22 EST)

I just got off of the phone with iPhone tech support. (had to use my landline!)

After a 20 minute wait, I got to talk to Ashley. She said there are 1100 people on hold and everyone she talked to so far is having the same "accessing iTunes" problem.

She said DO NOT disconnect your phone. Intead, when you get the message saying it timed out, click ok. Then click on any other heading, Music for example, in your itunes. Then go back and click on your iPhone icon.

Keep doing this repeatedly to keep your place in line.

I did this for the past 10 minutes STRAIGHT through and I am now done!!! Honest to god! I dont know how to do screen shots or whatever, but I'm done.

Still getting the security alert with ssl or the other. Any suggestions on getting around this. i have changed it to one then the other and both and still get the same immediate error. it isnt even checking with the store anymore before erroring.

Well I have cancelled my connection at the risk of losing my info. When I reconnected I got an error saying cannot connect to iTunes as there is a fault with the server (no shizzle) please try again later.

So i'll be giving it a couple of hours and then trying again.

EDIT: Just read post 660. DAMN IT!!!!! :D

okay so i did the update, but iTunes comes up with and unknown error -9838 and my phone is not working. I can only get the emergency call screen. How can i restore it?

Everyone complaints about iTunes not being prepared and its servers not working properly, well, what the hell do you expect on the very first few hours of the launch? Perfection? There are millions of people trying to login at the same time.

Some of you even compare this to Vista. Are you on crack? The morons are the ones trying update today. Wait until tonight or tomorrow and everything is going to be fine. This happens "everytime" and some people don't even learn. It gets OLD!

Finally!!!

I was getting hung up on itunes update too, for about 1 hour. I gave up restarted my mac and undocked my iphone..... Once restarted I brought up itunes and was geting the network error people have previously mentioned. I undocked a few times and the as I was looking at the app store section on itunes it worked! I got through the activation and now I am restoring all my content!!!! One complete 2.0 upgrade though itunes actually complete!!

Light at the end of the tunnel (UK)

Mine's just gone from the ever present 'Accessing iTunes..'...to showing 'Waiting for activation' on iPhone screen...and now, right now in the past 5 seconds...

It's up... It's working...It's only blooming activated. Sveeeet.

MacRumours iPhone support forum, you have my thanks ;-)

Recommendation from Apple board

I'd been waiting like 45 minutes for it to connect to the iTunes store, and I read a suggestion on the Apple board that worked.

I clicked on a playlist, then back on the phone in the left hand list. I then went from the progress bar to a pop-up numbered error. Dismiss error. Playlist. Back to phone. Probably the same logic behind ejecting it and reconnecting it over and over.

Worked within about 12 rounds / 1 minute. It connected and now it's resyncing and I might just make it to work after all.

Hope that helps someone,
Aym

geez there are so many posts in this thread of people mad at apple because all of the 1st gen iphone owners are trying to upgrade atonce which causes the slowdown. there's nothing wrong with itunes, it will be slow because of so many people trying to update.

if there's any error with your update, go to: yourhomefolder/library/itunes/iphonefirmware/ and trash the firmware. itunes will download a fresh copy and it should work

we've been waiting for this since last october so i think we can wait 10-30 mins during update instead of coming on here and bashing apple when they're in no way at fault.

I was receiving the same error, and I just got through with the 2.0 firmware. Keep trying; it will work!
