so i got the 9838 error again after trying to access the store for about 15 minutes.

it's likely that no one is going to be able to activate their phones until a few hours after the Cali release. there is going to be some major traffic through apple and ATT.

i guess i'm just going to wait it out.

UNPRECEDENTED NEW ERROR PICTURE lol It's probably going to be old by the time I post it.

If you get this after you have completed the firmware and sync, then you are not going to be able to sync your iPhone until it is resolved, but you can eject and use your iPhone, albeit minus the apps you may have downloaded on iTunes.

9838 error

I've have the can't complete your iTunes store request error (9838). Toggling around the store, library, connecting/disconnecting iPhone (and other iPods) doesn't help. :(

Add mine to the brick pile. Maybe opening up a ton of new iTunes stores along with upgrading 6 million 2G and selling perhaps a half-million 3G a day has brought iTunes to it's knees.

In an hour and a half I am leaving for a week long vacation where I'm not planning on having internet other than on my phone. Looks like I won't have a working phone now. Thank you Apple.

anyone get this message?

For those that installed 1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw yesterday and then updated to the official "1,1" version today...

does it fix the performance issues i.e., the occasional slow interface? I've also noticed my iPhone w/ "1,2" will randomly disconnect from iTunes.

I was just thinking that this was a launch worthy of Microsoft...

"Let's launch MobileMe, iPhone 3G AND 2.0 on the same day at the same time..."

Brilliant!!

lol, I'm waiting for Apple to throw one up like "Hey jackass, what makes you so so special? Did you really think that out of all the MILLIONS you'd be able to connect and activate? Give it a rest buddy and come back later this afternoon. Sheesh. Thanks for being a loyal Apple customer!"

I would like an answer to this as well. I have yesterday's pre-release installed, and searching through contacts has an obvious lag...especially when loading a contact!

Also, those of you who installed the pre-release yesterday and updated today, can you provide a step-by-step instruction for what you did to get it to successfully work? I believe that would be quite beneficial to a number of people.

After hours of staring at the Accessing iTunes Store, my iPhone miraculously activated. Now I can't even restore my settings and media, because I'm getting the -9838 error. Why does it have to connect to the store again if the phone is activated already???!

I am in the exact same situation. I restored my settings by using the instructions found here: http://blogs.oreilly.com/iphone/2008/06/iphone-backups-part-2.html

After restoring I still get the -9838 error but at least I have my contacts on the iPhone (Music and everything else is still missing...)

NOPE, today's is 1,1 YESTERDAY's was 1,2

He said his RESTORE file was 1,2 from TODAY!

That makes no sense.

And that link above is 1,2 ALSO! lol

So I'm not TOUCHING my 2.0 update from yesterday until this mess is completely sorted out!

It looks there are 2 updates:
1,1 is for the 1st gen iphone and is slightly smaller in size
1,2 is for the 3G iphone

Automator

When you're getting the iTunes error, if you're on a Mac, simply pull up automator and record three tasks in iTunes. Click on something in the side bar besides your phone, click on the phone, and when the error comes up, simply click ok. Then end the automator recording.

Copy that task in automator about 60 times, and then press play. Let it run, it gets you back in the queue. Worked awesome for me, and now my iPhone is no longer an iBrick!

Would you mind providing a little more detail for those of us who have never used Automator? I could not see how to do what you suggest even after spending 30 minutes with Automator. How does one "record three tasks in iTunes?"

Ummm... why the heck were you trying to do an update then? Did you not expect this insane rush to get the software? You were making a mistake to try to update when you had a critical need.

Cannot Use iPhone!!!

My iPhone has turned into a brick. It shows a USB cable that needs to be connected to iTunes. I cannot access the phone and cant get make or get any calls. When I connect my phone to iTunes, it shows the 9838 error message.

This happened when trying to update to 2.0.

This is what you get when you wait for the official version to come out. I should have downloaded the leaked version yesterday when the load on the server was not that heavy

Same Issue

Chupa, I am having the same issue. I have 1,2 and the whole OS is moving too slow for me. Anyone have thoughts on this and does the 1,1 version affect this? And if so, is there a link out there??

why no 2.0 earlier

Yes! That makes perfect sense, I was wondering the same thing.

They didn't do that because most of the reviewers were even saying that with the 2.0 update there's little reason to buy the 3G. With that said I still plan on purchasing it, but Apple was just trying to make sure that as many of the current Iphone users as possible upgrade.
