Sorry for the mixup, guys. To set the record straight:

MD5 (iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) = 07df1235aef0bc5f58f331ebc34543be
MD5 (iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) = 93f1a04f5b2fcff4fa93da1dce486c80

iPhone1,1_2.0 is TODAY'S firmware update.
iPhone1,2_2.0 was yesterday's.

Its called a land line, silly.

I just got a free shuffle for my problems with 2.0 software upgrade, call Apple care. Tell them you need your contact info, now.

What's that? I don't have one of those at home. :)

This is what I see too, so I'm going to restore to this version (option+click RESTORE). I've had to do several hard resets. Also the 1,1 designation of the new 218.2 mb file is in line with all the other original iPhone firmware releases.

I'm going to do a quick compare, and report any differences.

EDIT 2: Yesterday I downloaded the 2.0 IPSW from the found link (though ended up not installing), which was 225.0 MB. The version downloading now is supposedly 218.2 MB. Different build, perhaps?

My 2G iPhone is running perfectly fine with yesterday's firmware. I am going to wait until all of this fun dies down a little bit before I try to restore and use the "real" firmware.

Hey, one benefit to the 3-4 hour wait, now my iPhone is fully charged and, now that it finally broke through the iTunes server wall, will be ready for a full day of app joy.

That is the firmware for the iPhone "2G" (original). The 2G has been called "iPhone1,1" all along; it is the 3G that is iPhone1,2. This follows the standard Apple versioning scheme for hardware.

Ahh, then all first generation iPhone (2G) owners should grab the iPhone1,1_2.0 file that was announced today, right?

Bad karma

I managed to download and install 2.0, but now my phone is locked and inactive. When I try to sync I get about 5 minutes of "accessing iTunes Store" and then an error message saying "we could not complete your iTunes request (error -4). So now I have a phone that will only call 911 until the iTunes store comes back up. This is pretty lame. I'm open to suggestions.

i hate to say this, cause as a fanboi i really don't like to get down on apple, but someone screwed the pooch on this one. Who's idea was it to do a mobile me launch, and iphone 2.0 launch, and the iphone 3g launch in 24 hours? Anyone know?

You have a point! I am not sympathizing with you guys trying to update on minute #1, but Steve Jobs had to give the ok.

So, you aren't really a "happydude"? LOL - really, this isn't such a huge deal... give them a couple of hours or a day and it will all be over. Get real - if you really thought it would be perfect on the first day, then you are the fool.

I completely disagree. If the issue were simply that you had to wait a day or two to get 2.0 up and running, that would be one thing, but the current system is actually bricking people's phones and making them unusable! This bricking is temporary, sure, and it will probably be sorted out within the next day or so, but for an item like a cell phone where people come to really rely on having them work to conduct day to day business and other important communications, this is 100% unacceptable.

There is a long way between "perfect" and "many users's phones that worked fine are bricked for the day simply because they tried to update using Apple's firmware update method".

The worst part is that anyone with a lick of sense saw this activation server clusterf*ck coming as soon as they announced the new in-store activation requirements and AT&T and Apple had ample time to plan for this and they still dropped the ball in a huge way.

It isn't the end of the world, but as consumers we should demand better.

Hmm, the latest 2.0 file I downloaded and used (yesterday) was called:

iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347

And I installed it on to an iPhone 1st Gen. Seems like everything is fine and running normally. I doubt there is any substantive difference between this file and the iPhone1,1,2.0 file.

Guys, I'd be careful about downloading any firmware files yourselves. Here's why.

Yesterday's file was called iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347. Today's is iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_5A347. The MD5 checksums:

MD5 (iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) = 07df1235aef0bc5f58f331ebc34543be
MD5 (iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) = 93f1a04f5b2fcff4fa93da1dce486c80

Clearly they're very different. The 1,1 vs 1,2 is interesting, not sure what it means. I'm curious to hear from anyone who had yesterday's firmware update (1,2) and has now updated to today's 1,1 and has seen better performance or bug fixes.

Yes, and MACWORLD.COM has been giving out the WRONG one to people saying its todays! Too funny.

Gonna be a LOT of bricks this weekend if there's anything wrong w/ yesterdays!

Hey, one benefit to the 3-4 hour wait, now my iPhone is fully charged and, now that it finally broke through the iTunes server wall, will be ready for a full day of app joy.

howd you get it to finally break the itunes erros?

oh ya oh ya , happy dance happy dance happy dance. FINALLY BROKE THROUGH. I'm sorry apple for all the corporate slurs, I love you!

My restored new 2.0 is up and running :D

5A347

Modem firmware: 04.05.04_G

The modem firmware installed from yesterday's update file is exactly the same. Since the modem in the 3G and the first generation iPhone are different, this would lead me to believe that either the firmware updated knew to install the first generation modem firmware for first generation iPhones, therefore, yesterday's update was not strictly for the 3G iPhone as reported by some here.

After several -3828 (or whatever the hell it was) and -4 errors, the iPhone just activated for me. I'm restoring from backup and syncing up as I type this.

ugh finally after about an hour of patience and then when the error 98*something* went away it wouldn't connect.. but after starting the update at 7:30 I got my phone activated and set up around 8:55.. blah. My friend's phone won't back up when he tries to update. no good.
