but for an item like a cell phone where people come to really rely on having them work to conduct day to day business and other important communications, this is 100% unacceptable.
...

It isn't the end of the world, but as consumers we should demand better.

Again, if someone had a REQUIREMENT for 100% uptime on their iPhone today for work or a date or several hours before going on a vacation or whatever, then they were the fool to try to do the update on day 1 of this!!!!!!!

They can't blame Apple... they can only blame themselves.

Apple + AT&T =

iMpotency!
 :(

In the words of the local AT&T store..."too bad, so sad"...definitely Apple's fault, to which Apple replies..."not I, blame wireless in the sky."

Guys, I'd be careful about downloading any firmware files yourselves. Here's why.

Yesterday's file was called iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347. Today's is iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_5A347. The MD5 checksums:

MD5 (iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) = 07df1235aef0bc5f58f331ebc34543be
MD5 (iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) = 93f1a04f5b2fcff4fa93da1dce486c80

Clearly they're very different. The 1,1 vs 1,2 is interesting, not sure what it means. I'm curious to hear from anyone who had yesterday's firmware update (1,2) and has now updated to today's 1,1 and has seen better performance or bug fixes.

Look the difference between:
iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw = iPhone First Generation
and
iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw = iPhone 3G

This is the reason why "iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw" link was up yesterday because some countries were already selling 3G and it had to be there in case someone with 3G needed to restore, we never saw it on iTunes because it can only be seen as a 3G update

All this bricking made me realize a very important thing. A phone should be just a phone. When you make a phone into a complicated thing, heck we're talking about a full blown Mac OS X on the phone here and if something goes wrong then this is what happens. The phone becomes unusable. What if this happens in an emergency situation? For eg. phone software gets corrupted because Super Monkey Ball took too much RAM and now you cant make phone calls.

I think its better to have a separate gadget for all these things like the iPod Touch and one reliable simple phone which you can depend on.

I feel like I am waiting in WoW the queue, they instituted to workaround the login server load issues way back when.. Oh wait, that actually makes sense. I can only hope that those folks going through activation in the stores with new phones actually have priority to get the phones activated past initial emergency call screen.

I can understand existing 1st gen users being stuck in this loop. As with many new tech release things on a large scale, if you need your existing working device/software, don't take the day off .. don't be the first candidate on the first day of release ... etc. etc.

But, if this is occurring in stores right now with new 3g activations.. sheesh...

and after two hours of trying, my phone is now 2.0 and working. :apple:

Just keep using the trick to switch tabs every time it times out. Works a lot better than unplugging and plugging back in. Switch to music and back to iPhone and after about 50 errors you will update and sync.

how far apart were your intervals of errors

Hang in there. It cleared up for me after repeated attempts clicking on the sidebar between iTunes store and the device icon for the iphone. And I'm in London with a SoCal number.
Monkey Ball is addicting and the accelerometers work really well!!
Signing off to play Monkey Ball!!!

It took about an hour for mine to go through ... after the the firmware installed and it restored my files it tried to connect to iTunes and failed ... so I have a functional phone, but can't install my downloaded apps ... I'll try connecting again tonight. My advice to anyone going through this ... if you get an error, unplug/replug your phone and try again. Repeat as needed.

At a Milestone!

Just hit the 2-hour mark! I am looking at my iPaperweight, wondering why I didn't think to wait until later in the day to do this update. If this takes much longer, it looks like I might be without a phone for the rest of the day. I am a huge fan of Apple, but this is pretty bad. Yes, it is risky to download an update the second it comes out (especially one this hyped), but it's ridiculous to call people "stupid" for being upset at having to plug and unplug their iPhones every 5 minutes. There is not even an official alert telling us what is wrong! We have to try and translate "error -4." We are at least tech-savvy enough to check out a forum like this for solutions, but what about the average consumer? Most people are going to be completely lost when iTunes gives them errors for two hours.

Mine was weird, it gave that unknown error a lot, so it was a quick switch, then the "accessing itunes store" came up every now and then, it would time out after about 3 to 5 min. The third or fourth time I got it to get to the "accessing itunes store" it worked.

I to am in the endless loop of "Accessing Itunes Store". I should have left well enough alone and waited for all the problems to shake out.

So all iphone users should be tech savvy enough to know this was going to happen? That's absurd. I am a HUGE Apple fan (iMac at home, 3 laptops in the family, G5 at work and 2 time capsules) but even I can admit they screwed the pooch on this one.

I guess it must be hard for you to see anything behind those fangirl glasses you're wearing but here in the real world it is reasonable to expect a company making cellphones not to do something as stupid as what Apple and AT&T just did. This isn't an act of god or something unforeseen, they could have and should have done their own stress testing to see what would happen and realize that allowing people to brick their phones is something that needs to be worked around. If I made a decision at my job that resulted in a situation like this, I'd be fired on the spot, and rightfully so, IMO.

As I said before, this isn't the end of the world, but it IS a big deal, and people whose iPhones are now iBricks have every right to be pissed off about it.

when ever i switch tabs back to iphone it says accesing itunes for about 5 mins then an error (reapeat)

everything seems to be updated and running smoothly only problem i c is that I can't get any information to turn up once i click my iphone in itunes, get that same connection error. Strange?

Ok my music and videos restored, but now I am back at the accessing the iTunes Store. I guess I was wrong when I woke up at 5:15 am to beat the morning crowd.

Don't you think apple should have released this software like a week week ago.

You have to call apple care and bitch, it got me a free shuffle. Still I could care less about that, just want my phone contacts back. But in the e(sorry just got another error message, time to re-access the itunes server, there we go)nd I'll have 2.0 running, and a free shuffle.

This explanation makes the most sense to me, and it would also explain why some iPhone 2.5G phones are working slowly or buggy.

So it's starting to look like I really do have the wrong firmware on my iPhone! :(

Although unlike some others, mine seems to be working fine.

What a mess though for Apple, especially with MacWorld giving out the WRONG FIRMWARE link as well and telling people it's the correct one. I alerted them, but I'm not sure they believe me. At least here, we knew the risks and warnings and took our chances.
