will this 2.0 restore firmware work for ipod touch...? if not, ant clues...nothing but errors and from the apple itunes

I guess it must be hard for you to see anything behind those fangirl glasses you're wearing but here in the real world it is reasonable to expect a company making cellphones not to do something as stupid as what Apple and AT&T just did. This isn't an act of god or something unforeseen, they could have and should have done their own stress testing to see what would happen and realize that allowing people to brick their phones is something that needs to be worked around. If I made a decision at my job that resulted in a situation like this, I'd be fired on the spot, and rightfully so, IMO.

As I said before, this isn't the end of the world, but it IS a big deal, and people whose iPhones are now iBricks have every right to be pissed off about it.

i think most of us WERE upset that we expect something better from apple

Just broke through the damn iTunes Berlin Wall and got the iPhone restored from backup, it's restarting now so hopefully when it turns back on everything will be good to go.

UPDATE: Yup, we have ignition. Just keep trying guys, it'll go through.

Apple may have disabled the update, I am now seeing "Your iPhone is up to date" with 1.1.4 when I hit check for update.

ok i am terrified, i just started to update my mums iPhone to 2.0 and then read about the issues. What are the chances of it not working correctly? Can it be fixed later?

Edit: OK, now it is stuck in that endless loop, does anyone know how to fix this?

I got it to work

I'm in california... i have the original iphone. 7am PT. downloaded firmware 2.0. Installed to phone. Then like all of you got both the -9XXX error and -4 as well. I just kept trying by clicking music and then back to iphone. (Just like the automator instruction posted couple pages back). Took like 4-5 tries.... but i got it to work.. it's syncing back my music and videos now. I had also downloaded 10 apps yesterday.. So i'll post again after the sync is done.

I have a friend in line at the Apple Store here in Seattle, and she said it was 40 minutes from when the first person went in until they came out with their phone. Crazy!

Look the difference between:
iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw = iPhone First Generation
and
iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw = iPhone 3G

This is the reason why "iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw" link was up yesterday because some countries were already selling 3G and it had to be there in case someone with 3G needed to restore, we never saw it on iTunes because it can only be seen as a 3G update

Now all we need is for a iPhone 3G owner to restore their phone and see if what you think is true. (Unless someone had already done that).

I've been trying to follow along, but 40 pgs is a lot! Do we have any CONFIRMED members who had updated their firmware with YESTERDAY'S pre-release, that have since upgraded to the official today?

Curious about how that went / what they did, not to mention it would be good to know just to alert the forum members.

MacroMullet and TitoC are right on

Macromullet and TitoC nailed it. It is NOT THE FAULT OF A CONSUMER for trying to download new software/applications on the day they are told they can do so by the maker. Someone else said that this was "A launch worthy of microsoft." Yes, I might agree although Im sure once all the 2.0 goodness starts working, father Steve would of healed all our wounds. :)

But yes, if Apple says you can download it and MAKES IT AVAILABLE, then it should run smooth. If this was going to be an issue, they should of released the software last week so all the 1st gen people would of had it and the pipes wouldn't all be clogged up.

Again - read what i wrote (and quit calling me names! I am NOT a 'fangirl')

It is STUPID to do ANYTHING ON THE FIRST DAY OF A SIGNIFICANT RELEASE if you REQUIRE 100% usage of that device. The smart thing to do is WAIT.

You can argue all you want, but if you needed your phone today, you should have waited PERIOD END OF DISCUSSION.

It isn't just Apple - it is true of any new software, new product, new gaming device etc.

If I was in your position I would wait. :)

Seriously — there are tons of problems and issues.

But by tomorrow things should be settled.

I have got my iPhone updated to 2.0 — but still unable to sync anything since there is no access to the iTunes store.

Beware.

Oh no! I tried to warn you, but… ;)

Apple should have let 1st gen iPhone owners to download 2.0 earlier this week. Both as a 'thank you' and to prevent this very thing from happening.

AMEN!

So not only are existing iPhone customers having issues, but Apple & ATT are having huge problems activating 3G iPhones in the store now. It's so bad, they're letting people go out the door without activation which we're told was manditory in order to purchase. Apparently you can do the initial activation at home as that is what they're instructing customers to do.... although those people will have to deal with the same problem at home.

The best thing about iPaperweights is that with so many phones down I am getting 5 BARS!!!! Yeahhhh! As far as I am concerned Apple can keep you guys bricked as long as my signal gets better!!!

:)

here comes the bashing..... he he he....

Thats exactly the problem, Apple is being like any other device, but they build a reputation of being better than everyone else, so thats what we expect!

Apple Accountability........

I've been pretty silent up until now but I firmly disagree with this. While this sadly may be the norm, its certainly not something that companies or users should be comfortable with. It is never the consumers fault if they choose to upgrade on day one. I'm a software developer. If i release crappy software on day one then it's not the user's fault. It is my own. It's a testament to the lack of proper testing and capacity planning that goes with things like this that has jaded users into thinking they have to wait, because it can't ever possibly work, but that's just a sad mentality. Software developers and engineers all need to do better. Imagine if the car industry was like that and we said, "well you bought your car on day one. It's your freaking fault dude that your car now has a problem."

I'd say it's risky to upgrade on day one, but it's never the user's fault if things don't work, and users who upgrade and that don't have success have a right to be angry. I can guarantee Apple is pissed as hell right now with themselves and their performance, so why shouldn't we be?

Well said and on target. Apple blew this......PERIOD! I love the product and will continue to await each and every new development. However, I am sorry and shocked that Apple dropped the ball on this so dramatically. Time to Wake up Apple!

It was my first time using it too. When you open up Automator, click the red record button in the upper right hand corner. It will hide automator and show your applications underneath. Just go through the motion in iTunes. Click on say "Purchased" then click on your phone, then click on the "OK" button when the error comes up. Then stop recording.

This will appear in automator. You can press play and make sure everything works. Once you verify it's working, click on the whole thing, cmd+c to copy, cmd+v to paste, and you can keep pasting several times. once you have a good set, just press play and let it do it's thing.

The bad thing is that you can't do anything else while it's running...
Perhaps the difference is due to Tiger versus Leopard? There is no red record button. Is this what you get with your Automator?

i'm gonna say hours, this is a huge PR disaster if they don't get these phones activated within the next 8 hours

You know what? It so isn't.

I'm guessing that most people that end up buying an iPhone aren't even aware that there is a new version coming out today and any drama and hoo-haa'ing will be a negligibly small bunch of nerds (like us) bleeting about it on teh interwebz.

Any publicity that trickles down to the general population will be good publicity because it will raise awareness of the product and be along the lines of 'it is SUCH hot tech that teh interwebz exploded on launch day!!' variety.

Oh and anyone that expected a smooth launch is kerayzeee. I was on-call last night and absolutely needed a 100% functional phone. You think I went anywhere near that firmware?

If everything is still broken on Monday then yeah, they will get some bad press about it that will probably end up raising sales even more.

P.S. I queued from 7am till 1pm when I eventually walked out of a store with an iPhone 3G, thanks to O2's dreadful launch. What will most people see? Probably just pictures of queues of people excitedly awaiting new tech.

I'm doing a full restore of my 2G iPhone and it's downloading 2.0 just now (overwriting the 2.0 I installed yesterday) so I can give the phone to my sister. No problems with yesterday's 2.0 so I don't foresee problems with today's.

btw, Firmware 2.0 + iPhone 3G rocks. Firmware 2.0 was great for the last day that I've been using it. Now it's god-like.

Getting this for about an hour now. It keeps bringing up the rror message I go through the steps and this happens again.....

TechRepublic editor Jason Hiner reports that in his line in Louisville, Kentucky, an Apple representative just said, "We're looking at considerable delays," indicating that it might be a three or four hour wait for a phone. Hiner went on to report that an Apple representative had indicated that all activations had stopped temporarily and might not resume for some time. And indeed, our Jonathan Seff has also heard that it's down again.
