sitting at the -4 error... i just keep hitting ok and clicking the iphone link on the side, it should eventually go through.

its funny how you can access the itunes store right above the "so and so's" iPhone! Then you click iPhone and you get that the itunes store has timed out! Wow, what a joke!

I wonder if all these people repeatedly pinging the activation servers is a huge pain for the admins trying to get them to run smoothly...

holy ****, it's working on 2.0 and im getting apps now!

if you get errors, just keep clicking ok on them and then go to then click the iphone link on the left panel, after about 10 tries or so, it will take.

Engadget says not to disconnect your phone or the whole process will start over.

Has anyone who has completed the upgrade process after getting the not able to connect message, disonnected their phone shut down itunes then tried to connect again and have to restart the entire process or did it just continue on...

I have to say I do feel bad for everyone having problems, especially those that are bricked. I'll be waiting for the dust to settle.

I'm assuming that the load would be still quite overwhelming even if they did stager 2.0 and 3G rollouts. So we all could have been facing the same problems even if it had been an earlier release of the update, everyone would still be crashing on the servers to update, just not as wide spread.

The more I've looked into this, the more it looks like Apple did underestimate the "predictable" system load.

I downloaded (from the link posted earlier) TODAY'S release of the firmware. Has anyone tried updating their phone manually by pointing to this file? Any thoughts / opinions on what type of experience I'll have if I do that?

Anybody? Beuler? I'd appreciate some info on what people are thinking.

I had a similar error message myself...

We should all boycott Wall E just to give Steve Jobs a lesson, lol. Just kidding, it is not the end of the world. I had to run a lot of errands today so I really need my iPhone but oh well, I just laugh about it, put the SIM card in an old phone I have laying around and go on my merry ways.

Others have done it, and are having the same troubles as everyone else, tho some have gotten through and are doing just fine. I'm on yesterdays 2.0 still, and will probably just get the 3G iPhone before I try today's 2.0 on my old one and hand it to my sister.
Bueller... :D

Man do I feel lucky!! I upgraded to 2.0 this morning (8:30am EST) with no problems. Took about 20 minutes.

I Hope Folks Can Chill.

I know this is really frustrating for a lot of people (me included). But my recommendation is -- if you are getting torqued, just take a break and try again later. If you're willing to put up with the hassle of time and some glitches, then recognize that is the way it will be for now, but you may be able to get through the process, just slowly.

I think I'm finally there (how? see below).

If you haven't started the update to firmware 2.0 and you are faint of heart, just wait until things quiet down. (See earlier post -- the Bugs Life moth-to-flame analogy..."But it's sooooo beauuuuutiffffulllll!!!) BUT! -- be aware -- Just because you get can USB in your phone and get the availability of the 2.0 software download to show is far from a guarantee you will complete the process with no potholes, at least right now.

I plugged in right off the bat this morning, went fine through software download, backup, preparation steps, then lost connection to iTunes Store. I'm one of the many who hung during the "accessing the iTunes store" progress bar, with the warning message that the network connection was lost and to check my network (obviously not the issue...). Phone dead, showing USB connect icon. Hard restart failed. Nada. Panicked. Spent more than an hour on hold with Apple support (going to this blog to pass the time), finally got a very courteous (if overworked) agent, who verified (surprise, surprise) that the iTunes servers were simply overloaded.

I followed the suggestions from earlier in the thread and clicked back and forth between my music library and my iPhone in the Devices list everytime the connect attempt timed out, to re-trigger the attempt to connect to the Store, and after many tries (1.5 hours?), I got connected, got my sync completed...but it interrupted again. I'm trying to figure what, if anything, didn't finish up, and once again I can't get the iTunes Store handshake to finish it off. However, my restore was successful, the new firmware/software is there, and it appears functional so far. My phone and mail, music, vids, calendar, contacts, photos, are all back. I was able to download 1 3rd party app so far (Facebook; works fine. Cool.)

Finally, I hope some posters will stop flaming each other and ease back on the criticism. It's okay. We'll get through it.

Why hasn't Apple released a statement of some kind? It just seems like we are all waiting for someone to do something (unless yours works).

A question for those of you who have gotten it to work....

If you used the toggle between iTunes store and iPhone method, how long did you wait at the iPhone "Accessing iTunes Store" screen before clicking the store to restart your connection?
