Very disappointing for those of us purchasing all of our media on blu-ray.

From Apple.com:
"The MacBook Pro 15- or 17-inch display is ideal for viewing high-resolution Photoshop images or HD movies. The optional 1920-by-1200 resolution on the 17-inch MacBook Pro offers a 30 percent increase in viewable area over the 1680-by-1050-resolution display. With more than half a million extra pixels at your disposal, you can view 1080- resolution HD video in all its glory — no need to resize the window to fit the screen."

Nice, but do I have to wait for that 1080p to download?

Was really hoping to make the jump from PC to Mac, but I'll hold off until this changes. :(

Buy a PS3 for Blu-Ray and you can stream media if you have medialink.

Weird, my 17" does as well. We must have gotten lucky.

Slightly OT, but with the MBPs now having access to 512 Mb of video ram, I am wondering when the iMacs will see a similar adjustment.

I am patiently waiting on a revised MBP and iMac, now it's down the the iMac. :)

No case redesign ftl :(

Why are folks complaining about hard drive size in the 15" model? Why not buy the cheapest option for hard drive on teh MBP, order a 320 GB WD drive, clone your Mac from the 200 to the 320, insert into MBP and place the 200GB in a $20 USB drive cage? :)

Because people ALWAYS need to find some reason to complain with EVERY upgrade or update. Human nature!

Yeah, this is where you're gonna have all the true Mac fanboyz crawl out of the woodwork. The same people who have been bitching for weeks will come up with "Why isn't it faster?!?" "Why isn't it a touchscreen?!?" "How come it's still the same price?!?"

I'm actually surprised this has any negatives, but unless Apple gives out 20" MacBook Pros running at 3.5Ghz and having Blu-ray drives and Touchscreens, not everyone is going to be happy.

You forgot 10 hrs of battery life here. ;)

Yey , pro's and macbooks, choices choices. Is everything I expected, and the extra vram is great.

Ok now to poke fun at everyone whining in this thread.

Theres a whole heap of posts saying oh Im glad I bought mine 2 weeks ago this update sucks. No need to justify your purchase.

Ok what happened to the brigade of people that have been whining about apple remotes, "how many apple remotes do you own? I dont need anymore for the love of god stop giving me apple remotes". Guess what Apple is no longer shoving remotes down your throat. Can atleast one of you people be happy that you got your wish.

Theres also the we hate the air keyboard brigade, So much hate about the new mbp might have the air keyboard. It's here it and it doesnt so everyone needs to rejoice that your beloved pro keyboard is still onboard.

Are there people who honest to god thought this update would have a bluray drive?

512MB of graphics memory seems like an bit of a waste on an 8600M.

An 8800 sure, but a mobile 8600, I just can't see it being fast enough to put it to good use. You'd need to be running full resolution with high AA/AF and HDR to notice the impact on the memory usage above 256MB but honestly, most games that would take a hit in this kind of situation would tax the core GPU of an 8600M well before you even touched any AA settings that would cause spikes in the memory usage.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but an 8600M 512MB just sounds like a lamb in wolves clothing.

If you tell me where to select that 300GB HD option on a 15" MBP I'll stop "whining". ;)

Right "here": :)

Canada Prices Dropped

The prices have come down substantially on the 17". Just yesterday, a standard 17" MBP was well over $3,000. Today, it falls just under that.

My first generation MBP is needing to be replaced, but I'm not putting down the cash knowing that a redesigned case (magnetic latch, new keyboard) must be coming down the tube sooner or later.

I'll wait for WWDC in August. :)

I've got a 15" C2D MBP (2.16 ghz) I got new in late 2006. I've upgraded it to Leopard, iLife and iWork '08, AppleCare, 2 GB RAM and a 250 GB HD.
...
I figure I can get about $2,000 on eBay for my used 15" MBP.
Good luck with that

Wow! The Australian store is up and I know the pricing disparity has been done to death on this board but seriously... the 15 MBP is priced at $3400 AUD. The exchange rate has hovered around 0.9 USD for a long time and somehow that accounts for a $700 AUD difference

For those of you who are bitching about no blu-ray...
Apple has got something better.

Douple-Layer for the 17 incher

Sorry to disagree with your assessment. Dual-Layer is 8GB on single sided disk. BluRay is 50GB if I remember correctly. Also, the double-layer is on ALL new MBPs.

$4,256.96 on American Express.... My wife is going to KILL me.

17" Hi-res LED back-lit goodness, 4Gb and a 7200rpm hdd. :-D

Why in the world did you buy your RAM from Apple? Datamem should be a name you remember for next time...either Apple has one hell of a service charge or one hell of a markup on their RAM -- either way you're getting ripped off

2.4 vs 2.5

I've read a comparison between a 2.4 (T8300 cpu) and a 2.5 (T9300 cpu) on a windows platform. They concluded that the 2.5 is 10% faster than a 2.4...

All europe stores still show the mbp's with 128 and 256 video ram?

What should be the best choice. A 2.4 with 7200rpm hdd and 4gb ram or a 2.5 with stock hdd and 2gb ram...

FINALY.

Only my second post here, but following MBP since september (MR with morning coffee), god knows how many posts i've read...

So, this is me saying thanks all for the entertainment and the weekly tuesday ritual. Getting MBP and never looking back (first Mac w00t). Good luck for all those still unhappy and lingering here in the forums, I don't think i'll be taking a peek any time soon!

I am with you...gettin my first MAC today see you guys in 3-4 years

Thanks for the memories :D

Disagree. 74% faster. What is the big deal. Still love my first gen mbp.

Hmmm, personally i try to avoid using the term love when it comes to electronics ;) -- but I use Aperture and PS3 nearly daily and having the option to go to 4GB RAM is a big upgrade for me. YMMV.

My husband's early 2007 MBP is definitely more responsive than mine.

Well, now I am officially torn. Decent update, but not great considering the length of time. I like the idea that this will likely be the last of this style of MBP - which means it is also likely the finest tuned of the bunch. I'm never a fan of buying Rev. A products. That said, the main thing I was waiting for was some kind of GPU upgrade. The extra VRAM helps (the entry level is more viable now), but its not quite what I was looking for. Would have liked to have seen at least some kind of upgrade to the GPU itself, however minor it might be.

So, on balance, I think I get to continue waiting :(

If you tell me where to select that 300GB HD option on a 15" MBP I'll stop "whining". ;)

It's available on 17 only at the moment, but for the record ... 250GB standard + 100GB pocketdrive = 350GB ... an increase of 9% over the 320GB. :)

I'm looking at the new 17" MBP with the hi-res display. After the education discount (my wife's a teacher), and with taxes, I'm estimating it'd cost about $3,000.

I figure I can get about $2,000 on eBay for my used 15" MBP.

The question I'm wrestling with is, is it worth the extra $1,000 for the faster processor, bigger, better screen, better video card (mine has a 128 mb Radeon1600), extra USB port, multitouch pad? I do some video editing (both iMovie and FCS), photography (just got Aperture 2), and a bunch of other junk.

Your opinions welcome. Thanks! :apple::)

If I were in your shoes, I'd wait until the end of this year to see what kind of updates Apple brings to the MBP - i.e., hopefully updated cases with a magnetic latch...maybe a larger touchpad a la MBA...and whatever else.

I would get the 2.5 and then go and buy 4gb of ram from crucial (about £75) :D

Slight change of plans for me! I'm not ordering till tomorrow and canceling my order I made this morning!

Why, you ask?

Apple Employee Family & Friends Discount.

That's right. I have a friend willing to order me one with their 15% discount. It's gonna save me $300 USD and THAT is worth one day's wait!

However, it'll still be:

15" matte, 2.5GHz, 200GB 7200, 2GB RAM

Final price with discount and tax: $2367.07 USD.

You want old?!? I still have my IIci (albeit for posterity's sake ... I function in the real world ... LOL).

For those of you who only know Macbooks, Intel, G5s, Powerbooks and the like, it's a 25Mhz ... yes, MHz 68020 processor. And for those whiners out there ... it cost me $6000. So be happy with what you have. Trust me, in it's day, it was "all that"!

AMEN!

I had a IIci back in the day, then got the big upgrade to a Centris 650 [25 Mhz, 80MB drive, with a CD-ROM!!!!!!], then the wonder of all wonders a Power Macintosh 7100/66. WOOT!
