With all the people saying Mac won't get virus, is it true?
Does it have to do with OSX, or will I still get virus if you use Window in Bootcamp?

about the virusses:

hackers don't make virusses for us mac os X users since we are a relative small group.

if u are using xp with bootcamp u'll still get virusses

I'm amazed at the mouth-foaming for a minor speed bump. This is a laptop that hasn't been updated in some time, features the same trackpad as before despite addition of the Multitouch features, the same low resolution screen on the 15.4" model etc etc.

The trackpad is a case in point. I'm assuming the MacBook Air got a physically larger trackpad for a reason - to make better use of Multi-touch features - so why should buyers/users of Apple's most expensive laptop have to put up with a smaller, older piece of technology? At this kind of money?? Only the naive would see this as anything other than a fudge; a real gimmick.

It has negatives because it's expensive. You can pick up laptops with better specs for less. With the advent of hacked Mac OS running on PC hardware, perhaps its time Apple dropped the snobbishness and made their updates a bit more worthwhile.

My own personal gripe is that the 15.4" model has the laughably low screen resolution of 1440x900. For a laptop aimed at 'professionals' like myself it's a joke for Photoshop and other apps that have many palettes open at once. It also has the feeling of slipping well behind in terms of technolocy, and the best use of the technology. To put this in perspective you can get 15.4" laptops with 1920x1200 resolutions. A bit much for me, but the trend is very much about upping the working dpi, a trend seemingly lost on Apple.

Given the fanfair for the MacBook AirToy, it's hard to believe all their Pro users get is a speed bump. Where's the magic Apple?

Alright, So 1440x900 isn't the best but seriously when you take this computer as a complete package you need to seriously back the **** off. The MBP can take on any competition in similar price ranges. The thing about the MBP is that it's not the best at everything. It's not the best resolution, it's not the best graphics card, It's not the best processor, it's not the best of anything but whne you take it as a whole, and when you take into consideratinon it's capability for certain specific tasks (video, audio, and other creative tasks.) There is nothing that can best the MBP. don't get me wrong. My mac crashes multiple times a day. Just like my PC but when it comes down to it I enjoy working on , and get much more done on my mac. These machines are amazing. They basically function the way they ought and they have unparalleled technical support. I hate all the whiners that complain about not enough upgrades. Just ****ing deal with it. If you don't like what you see just don't ****ing buy apple. Look around and see if there's anything better out there. And btw, I'll welcome you back with open arms once you realize that nothing beats apple for certain creative tasks.

The funny things is that both the concept of Mac users not getting viruses because we are a small market, and that XP and Windows in general gets SO many viruses are both large myths.

Hackers have a lot to gain by creating a malicious virus for the Mac but they just can't. If I were a hacker and wanted notoriety or brownie points for shutting the arrogant Mac users up about their security then I would take it. And as for Windows, there are plenty of users even on this forum that haven't once had a virus issue with various flavors of Windows and they didn't use any anti-virus software.

p.s. but you are right about getting viruses on the bootcamp partition of your Mac with Windows installed.

If Apple rises the dpi on screens, they have to find a way to keep their OS usable. Do the math: You currently have 900 vertical lines. If you go to 1050 vertical lines, this means, that appr. 14% of your menu bar size will be lost (i.e. smaller, less readable, smaller icons). Same applies to any Application button, icons and so on. Have you seen XP on an old screen lately? I can tell you, it's looking rather funny with those big buttons in 1024x768 (the res I use for Parallels).

All resolutions are adjustable. I personally love having my resolution set to max settings - I can fit more information on the screen. Should those of us with good eyesight be forced to suffer lower resolution because a size 14 font will look "embarrassingly small?" I think not. Compared to the HD display on the 17" MBP, icon resolution on the 15" MBP looks "embarrassingly large."

My MBP I ordered on Friday has been updated from "Not Yet Shipped," to "Prepared for Shipping!" Hopefully it will ship out in the morning. Anyone that ordered theirs late in the week have it ship yet?

I ordered mine on Tuesday and still appears as "Not yet shipped" What were the original dates for yours to be shipped?? Mine says March 6-11 and should arrive on March 10-18. Almost a month after I ordered (and payed) for it!!!! It sucks, I'm never buying on the Store Online again...

Pc's will get the job done but just not the way I want it to. I've used a pc for 15+ years and I've only had 3 virus but the last 8 years I havnt had a virus. All you have to do is just use mozilla and dont download warez or pr0n.

I've switched to macs just 3 years ago with a powerbook g4 17" last rev.

ive got a pc...built it myself.never blue screened.beein using it for the past 2 years.and i didnt use top of the line stuff...pentium d 940 3.2ghz,not core 2 duo...1gb ram,not 2gb or 4gb....intel 965 chipset...gefore 7600gt..200gb HDD....WINDOWS XP.......but, it works,well.
i think if you maintain a pc properly itll work properly.once you treat it harshly, then itll be harsh back.

Yeah, my Windows PCs are all fine too (great actually). This is sacrilegious, but I like Window's font rendering WAAAAAAY better and overall like the OS better, except for all the DRM on Windows and so many Windows programs (although some Mac programs too :( )

My big problem with the MBP though is mainly just the lack of an officially user replaceable hard drive. I will not send in used drive for service, and don't want to have to run some kind of full drive encryption just in case I need service.

My BTO MBP was ordered tuesday and is in TN right now. There was a problem redeeming my iphone store credit and I raised some fuss so they upgraded the shipping to 2-3day for free :)
I'm expecting it on Tuesday.

I got expedited shipping and my estimated shipping dates were March 3-5. Did you make any modifications to yours or get the 17" model? I've heard the 17" takes longer to ship and the more mods the longer til they ship. The only thing I changed in mine was the screen to glossy.

It's de 15'' with 2.4 GHz. Only changes were glossy screen and 250 GB HDD. It shouldn't take that long.. It really sucks that I payed for it last tuesday and I'll be getting it 3 weeks later! My current computer is really dying, and I've been having to use a borrowed one this whole time. The problem is, I need my new computer because I use a lot of technical software that I cannot install on this machine. Anyway, I'll keep on waiting (do I have another option?) but I'm sure that next time I'll buy from a retailer and get my computer the moment I pay for it. If Apple is gonna take a month to deliver, they should at least let me pay a month later! (of course it's not gonna happen and it would be unpractical, but it's still unfair)

I got the 2.6 15" with glossy screen.

I'll take your point. Honestly I don't know that much about changing res in OS X, as I never used it. But honestly, we both don't have a choice. Apple chooses for us. That's why you only have the blue and the graphite option, like it or not.

That's why I tended to use ShapeShifter for some time, as I thought that my Mac looked wicked with Papyrus as System font (though it sometimes wasn't really redable).

Fact is, that Apple chooses for us. And they obviously chose to skip the high resolution 15" screens until resolution independence is ready. Talking about information on the screen: you are currently able to use up to 16 screens with Spaces, IIRC. That way it's really more usable than having several application windows open on one screen. When I use GoLive CS2, I fail to see how I could use those windows with an even smaller font.

Relieved that the heating issue seems to have been addressed

anyway, i had a pro before this one, and the heat issue has seriously been address by apple. The amount of heat that comes off it when im rendering video with premiere pro is negligable.

my last pro got pretty hot. this one not at all. thats all i have to say.

That's good news that people are saying the new MBP's have cooled down.. I ordered mine last week and that was the one unknown for me when I ordered it. You could fry an egg on the old machines!

You could fry an egg on the old machines!

That is a true story. I'm glad they have cooled off....I can't wait for tuesday, I keep refreshing the fedex tracker every five seconds...I think I'm going to cause a DOS crash on the fedex site and no one will be able to track packages :D

I am guessing Apple is just all messed up on shipping. They probably didn't expect to get as many orders as they did right away. Other than BTO mods there isn't an obvious reason for the delays. I will probably go to the Apple store for my next mac purchase.

Yeah, shopping online is supposed to be convenient since you can do it at home and have the package delivered to you. Instead, it turned out to be a bad experience to me. I'm getting my computer almost a month after I bought it! Unfortunatedly we don't have physical Apple Stores here (yet! ;) ) but next time I'll buy it somewhere else.

i ordered mine it got released and got it 3 days later. I didn't even get any special shipping. So that was china to chicago pretty damn fast. Its a great machine!

Meh. This really was underwhelming. I'm still on an iBook from 2005 (12", 1.33Ghz). I'll upgrade to the MB, once they get:

1)LED screen
2)6 hour battery life
3)Weighs around 4lb or less
4)Has 3 USB
5)Larger trackpad
6)Redesigned case (to take off the razor sharp edges where the wrists rest).

Perhaps I'll be waiting a long time... who knows. Maybe it'll be 2010 by then and OS X 10.6... I'm not jazzed by Leopard anyway, so 10.6 can't come too soon for me.

As for this update: PASS.

So I can wait on the portable. For desktop performance, unfortunately I'll need to get an iMac pretty soon (since it doesn't look like Apple will do a mid-tower).

Since I need a

Ordered the base 15/2.4 MBP this morning. It's pretty dumb that simply wanting the glossy screen pushes the order back. With expedited shipping my estimated delivery is March 5-10. Hopefully sooner than later.

I found that my shipping time doubled from the norm because adding the remote apparently makes it a 'custom' order. I would have thought they could just chuck a remote in at a local depot.

I really wish they had left the remote as standard, and I hope this dosen't mean it'll be phased out.

I thought it was neat that most of Apple's computers shipped with a standard remote and had that Front Row interface. (And I guess ElGato's software is good enough now to be used as a full blown DVR, and also supports that remote.)

It seems like Apple is considering any change to the computer or accessories as a custom order. That seems pretty stupid to me, but this may change as the number of new configured MBP's increases. I am guessing most of these issues are because it was just introduced and there are still somewhat limited supplies.

Also, $15 for 2-3 day shipping seems kind of high. I have ordered things online with next day air that costed $15 and that includes other electronics.

Ordered a 2.6 with 7200rpm with matte screen on Feb 26, it left Shanghai 3-1, arrived Anchorage 1:27 pm 3-1, left Anchorage 3-2 @ 12:00 am, arrived Memphis 12:39 pm, departed Memphis 4:02 pm and is "In transit" for the past 16 hours ? due at Wa State prior to Wed 10:30 am
