!! New Penryn MBP - Pathetic Wireless Throughput :(( !!

enryn MBP - Wireless throughput is pathetic !!
I got the new Penryn based 15.4" 2.4 GHz MBP yesterday
Three weeks back I had purchased a MB
I was aware I would run into some problems with Wi-Fi but was able to resolve them for my MB. Tried all the stuff I read on Macrumors forums and on Apple discussion forums. Some of them are:-
* Power cycle modem n router / Reset Router - I have a Trendnet TEW-432BRP 802.11 a/b/g router(latest firmware)
* Check SNR (singal to noise ratio) with iStumbler and set Channel to 11
* Disable Ipv6 in TCP/Ip settings on theMB
* Airport on/off - MB reboot
* Set / Remove DNS entries in Network preferences on MB
* etc etc etc including crazy settings on fragmentation / MTU and adding the No delay option in etc/smb.conf

At the end of it all, the MB seems to perform "ok"
Why "ok"?? -> My Windows Laptop with a .11g card downloads 700 MB files at an average of 950 kbps. When using a download manager (Flashget) I can crank it up to 1.5 Mbps with 10 parallel downloading segments for the same file.
MB on the other hand starts at about 100 kbps and stabilises in the range 375-420 kbps for the same file. (Note that I did not run the downloads simulataneously on the windows laptop and the MB, but one after another)

Now all this said n done, I was hoping I would be able to do something about the new MBP wireless throughput too. Yes as expected I was getting pathetic throughput. For example - When i started a trailer(Step Up 2) on Front Row, it took 3-4 minutes to buffer before the video started playing
It worsened after that to the extent that I was not able to stream "how to" videos from apple.com.
So, I read through tons of forums again and tried all the above.
Nothing worked and the thoughput as seen on iStat Pro (Menu Bar)hardly crossed 90 kbps (uplink/downlink) while trying to browse websites and stream a movie.
Any suggestions ??

MacBook Pro 17" High-Res = 2-3 Weeks!

I just ordered a new fully-loaded 17" MacBook Pro from the online Apple Store in Australia - it's my my first mac! :) When I selected that I wanted the high-resolution screen, the estimated delivery time went from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks. Any idea why?

I'm guessing you ordered the Glossy 17" hi-res? It looks like the matte hi-res only adds a couple of days to the shipping. Could be that these are in short supply.

But I wouldn't worry too much - I ordered my 15" yesterday and the shipping date was next Friday and was later revised for next Tuesday so I wouldn't be surprised if your shipping date gets revised quickly once an actual human looks at the order (as opposed to the system generated estimate)

P.S nice laptop!

kind of cause I just snagged this on refurb shop (only thing missing is trackpad thingy!(obviously not what I was waiting for))

I dunno but I think I got a bargain
You inspired me to not pass on this amazing deal.
Well, with all of my whining, i decided to pick up the SR 2.4 w/ 256mb vram refurbed.
I had many reasons:
1. 2 days ago this computer was 2499, now it is 1649US. 850 savings
2. I could not afford the 2499 Penryn - which is what i really want
3. Right now, the SR2.4 is faster than the Penryn 2.4 - SSE4 instructions wont be out for 6months, since adobe is a dog.
4. The graphics card is the same as the 1999 penryn
5. If a new chipset comes out in june, i will lose less on a resale of this than a new Penryn if i can't handle the current processing power(Mac Pro does spoil).
6. It was finally time to complete the intel transition
7. It's a boy! Anyone with kids knows about the urgency to get what you need to be able to provide and to realize that sacrifice is on the horizon, more-so than marriage. -- that being said, the PB was choking on some poster designs and the Mac Pro chomped through them effortlessly. The Powerbook took all day to process a few hundred raw files to JPG for printing and the Mac Pro chomped those babies in minutes. It is time to move forward. too bad there is no mobile version of the mac pro. lol.
8. with no case redesign, it is a pain in the booty to put in a new hdd anyways. no incentive to get the new one.

It came down to me saying, is SSE4 potential and 10-15% better battery life worth $300. I say, nope. Not when i can get a 500GB time capsule for $300.

anywhere else you can test it? e.g. other routers, public terminals, work,etc... Aluminum enclosures can hurt the signal, but not to the degree you state; that is ridiculous. Could be a router issue. MBP has 802.11N, you stated your router was G. 802.11 G should potentially allow you up to 6MB/s but that would require a lot of controlled variables. 54mbps is a lot faster than most peoples internet connection.

Friends, it is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of my decision to abandon Mac OS for Vista. ... I found a Compaq Presario laptop at Circuit City for $450. ... After using Vista, I found that the majority of what I had heard about Vista was a bunch of bull. Microsoft copied OS X quite well;...My experience with Vista was so good, that I abandoned my plan for buying a new iMac and instead bought an 3.0 ghz HP Pavilion Elite m9100z PC with TV/PVR (w/ 20' monitor) for $1150
I'll bite on that troll bait.
PC's are a dime a dozen. Their resale value shows it. I bought my MDD G4 1.25 for $1400, used it for 3 years and sold it on ebay for $1400. Recently sold my wife's 4 year old powerbook g4 on ebay for $500 and it sold with buy it now within 2 hrs. I knew i should have asked for more. I run the IT stuff at work and manage the exchange server. I understand there are some people who need to be on PCs. We are on a 3 year rotation for new workstations and let me tell you that i have never been able to recoupe anything close to what i do on macs. Once you have bought in, then it is just a matter of buying and selling at the right time.
Not to mention it takes like 60-90 minutes to transfer your whole computer over to the new mac. Boot in target disk mode and plug it in via firewire. It even keeps your desktop picture the same. With PC's when they are different hardware i have to manually install software and manually copy documents and settings.
Furthermore, when i get machines with vista, i format them and put on XP pro. Vista confuses the users and stuff just isn't as compatible as it needs to be. The machines run a lot faster on XP than they do on vista and one of the points of upgrading hardware is for speed. I'm not dogging vista, but i am saying it runs slower (requires more resources) and is confusing to the lay-user. I don't have time for that yet.
as per another conversation you guys were having. Push to exchange is amazing, 802.11 wireless sync is to die for.

I just got done ordering my first mac....
No Final Cut Exp Preinstalled
No Aperture Preinstalled
No Logic Exp Preinstalled
lol. i am glad you are excited. i love that you listed the software you didn't purchase

I stick with my TI for one more year.
you are a hero. you running 10.2? 10.3? not sure how you can run an old machine unless you are just doing basic stuff. my pb was killing me at the end.

You probably didn't get an answer because no one here knows. I honestly couldn't give you a REAL factual answer to that question because I don't know what those apps do, and why you'd need to run them via bootcamp or whatever.
3ds max is a program much like CAD, but it allows you to create scripts, write plugins and it is a lot more robust. It has animation. Materials editor that is far more in depth than any ihave ever seen. It is like maya.
My guess is, run bootcamp. You are going to want to use all of the graphics power you can for your modeling. Also, i think they use a USB dongle and it would probably cause less headaches to run it native like that.

Student ADC membership

Your pace seems a little slow;)
This is how I did it today (or yesterday according the eastern time). bought student ADC around 12pm, received the notice and activate it around 1pm, fax the ID copy and course list around 1:30pm. Called them around 3:30pm. 5 minutes later, the account got verified.

Did you buy the Student ADC membership in the online Apple store? I just did, and it is saying that it is going to be shipped via snail mail so that I'll receive it between March 3rd and March 6th. I thought this was something that was emailed to us. Is that not true? Also, what number did you call to have them push the verification through quicker?

Thanks!

New MBP(penryn) - pathetic wireless thoughput

I am yet to test it with other networks. But not sure if its the router since my other 3 laptops work fine with this router - MB 2.2 GHz SR, IBM Thinkpad T41 and Samsung P30 (the fastest one on the internet) running windows and with a PCI 802.11g card.
As for the Aluminium enclosure, I doubt it because I have tested with the MBP being close to the router (5-10 feet) and also while being a room across from it.
In both cases Airport Menu icon shows 4 bars (occasionally 3) indicating excellent signal strength.
The Apple care guy suggested trying to add a new service(Airport) on Network Preferences to over-ride any changes I made and make use of default network parameters. Did not work !
Although, an interesting observation is when I initiate many applications requiring bandwidth (Speed Download, Web browsing, Streaming media from websites) the net downlink speed peaked up to 250 kbps (as seen in Activity Monitor: peak value for network throughput) but the average remains below 100 kbps for sure !

Would call up Apple Care today :(

Anyone here using a 17" mbp hi res led model? I just want to know how awesome it is?? I'm seriously thinking about selling my current mbp and putting in the extra $ to get the 17" led model. But I do remember I had the sr 17" hi res (sold it) thought the resolution was a bit too small for the eyes and ended up squinting alot but then I got used to it and viewing pictures was awesome...

I bought the 2.4 penryn tuesday and the CPU temp in iStat Pro is usually between 50-53C. Under heavy load, the highest I've seen it go is 68C.

ahh that's perfect. my current 1st-gen mbp runs way too hot - like 84°C when under heavy load. once it shut down during the summer because of heat issues...

anxious

ahh get excited, it says prepared for shipping?!! what does this mean, will it ship today?

I have the same MBP 2.0Ghz 1st gen model and the heat can be harsh at times. Mine's never shut down due to the heat, but it can get very hot to the touch.

Nice to see the newer models addressing this.

It's funny, I just sold my Rev A MBP --- to move up and escape the 2GB limitation. I was so *used* to it being hot as hell that i had actually forgotten that this will be a nice change!

Looking forward to it.

I'm getting new MacBook Pro envy since the new models came out. Out of curiosity, how much did you sell your REV A MBP for? eBay?

Was yours BTO?

The only thing I changed on my 2.5Ghz model was for the glossy screen and that's considered BTO. Mine is still "not yet shipped."

Has anyone who ordered a BTO had theirs ship?

I ordered the exact same model with the glossy screen and a remote. Mine too is considered BTO and was supposed to ship Feb28-Mar3. Looks like it is going to be March 3rd:(

Yeah, it sucks considering the fact that we could walk into an Apple Store and buy a glossy screen MBP. Since you can do that, it shouldn't be considered BTO but maybe it is b/c the new models were just released.

I just hope the shipment doesn't get delayed after March 3...I've seen it happen before.

Will be getting my 15" 2.4GHz MBP when my iMac finishes up on eBay (1 hour to go). Have already ordered 2x2GB ram from Crucial. Not too happy hearing about the Airport reception issues...
