Shanghai to Anchorage to Indianapolis to Memphis..... My new PB has done more traveling then I have... My only concern is that I am in MN and it's getting FARTHER away from me. I'm starting to doubt I'll get it by Monday. :(

Well, I don't know what to make of FedEX tracking and delivery info. My powerbook is about 4 miles away from me, yet the delivery date has been extended from Wed (!) by 10:30am to 8pm. ??? I will call them tomorrow to learn if I can pick it up if Mr. Deliveryman can't do tomorrow. Do you suppose FedEx knows what they have and want to play with it Mon and Tues?

Where in MN? I am in Mankato and my ETA is 4/28.

I am in Duluth. My ETA is 4/28 as well. I was just getting my hopes up thinking maybe they were being generous with the date...I'm not too experienced with FedEx tracking. I was just assuming that since it was in Anchorage that it would go no further south then here and would probably therefore be here by Monday... I will just have to wait a bit longer I guess. I'm excited for my first mac ever!

Actually, I have known Fed Ex to overexagerate. My friend ordered a BTO iBook about 3 weeks ago. His tracking said it should arrive on Wednesday. It arrived on Tuesday. Just an example.

Performance

Just ran Xbench this morning to gauge performance on my new 12" 1.33.

Results are here

http://ladd.dyndns.org/xbench/merge.xhtml?doc1=63051

Score of 128 is very impressive. You can look up and down the list for Al Pbooks and see scores mostly ranging from 80's to 100's for the Rev A. This is at the very top.

Please note that I reset the Energy Saver to Highest Performance. The default is Automatic. I think some of the other scores posted there must have been run with the default, as it made quite a difference to my score.

Cheers

I'm curious... Have you run Photoshop or Dreamweaver on your machine? I ordered the same exact configuration last night, and am curious to know how they run (most notably CS).

Btw, does anybody know if Photoshop v7 is still available for purchase online anywhere? I've heard that CS runs slower than the older version.

Thanks,
Frank

Fedex Plays it safe!

With an international shippment from China it is no wonder that Fedex ( and Apple for that matter ) have an overly conservative delivery deadline of 10:30 am on 4/28. They have to account for any possible hiccoughs during the huge trip. I am sure we will all recieve our shippments tomorrow. Space is money and I have no idea why Fedex would want to babysit our PBs :)

The Photoshop I have is an older OS 9 version...runs great under Classic on this machine.

You can easily pick up any version of Photoshop on ebay. I just looked and there are tens of copies of v7 out there.

Does anyone here think that the 1.33 cpu may run cooler!

Or is that not likely to matter?

I was thinking that a 1.33 with a superdrive could be very nice!
Because maybe since the FSB is still crippled the 1.5 doesnt mean all THAT!

I would love the extra 128 Vram for an external monitor,,but , you know.

By the way, MacRAND, thanks for a great presentation.. that clinched the decision for me to purchase .Mac! :)

I have no idea when anything is going to arrive, but I'm too giddy to worry! :D I assume the RAM will arrive first, as the warehouse is about 15 minutes from here.

As for the PB, the order status now says "Open"...

Thanks again!

There was a save $30 on .mac when you buy it with a computer mail-in-rebate. Maybe you should reconsider.

Also the cheater method to get office pro (or standard for a discount)

buy office students and teachers ($125 on amazon) then you can upgrade to standard for $99 or pro for $129. Final cost is $235 for standard or $265 for pro (including shipping) a savings of $165 off of the standard price and $235 off the pro price. Good deal in my eyes!

Of some advice from a long time switcher to make your mac stay more pleasurable

1. Think logically, not windows (OS X works the way you think it should, not the way windows taught you
2. Get a 2-button mouse, and don't forget to add sidetrack to enable scrolling on your trackpad (Look in version tracker, it is free)
3. Don't forget about expose..it saves a lot of time
4. If you can't figure it out, try drag and drop.
5. save dialogs do not have the same functionality as windows ones...you cannot move files or delete them. Do not forget to expand your dialog box with that arrow so you can see your full directory.
6. Delete is not backspace!!!!!!! (you can get ucontrol and change it to backspace if you like, the notebook keyboards are different than windows keyboards)
7. apple key = control. Most keyboard shortcuts are the same
8. if you miss your startmenu...make a shortcut for your applications folder on the dock. right click (control click) or hold down your mouse on it, and all your apps show up.
9. If the solution seems obvious and easy, it is usually how it works.
10. have fun.

Some notes on office: the page set-up dialog boxes are really different than the pc version....it wil take some getting used to. The formating pallete is pretty cool, but entourage is very different than outlook....be patient if you plan on using it.

Enjoy your new powerbook!

I use a normal kind of messenger bag, it only cost me 25 bucks, but I place the powerbook in a sleeve that I sewed from red velvet.

It protect the powerbook.
The bag also has some padding in the sleeve to protect it from other books in the bag.

So i think that any bag will do with a good string strap, etc
Any of the cool bag places are good, I think that a sleeve is very important.
No matter what the bag.

Average time to delivery?

To all the lucky dogs!

Do let the remaining ones among us know how much time it has taken from online order to actual delivery of PBs.

Thanks!!

Hey,

I ordered a BTO on Tuesday morning, at about 630am Pacific Time. My machine shipped on Thursday, and is currently in Memphis with an estimated delivery date of Tuesday, April 27th.

So, if that does happen, that would be 1 week door to door.

Not bad!

I placed my order about 2pm (est) on monday. I origonally had ordered a 1.33 15" that was going to ship out on tuesday yet i canceled it. I changed my order to a 15" 1.5 (BTO) w/ 80gb hd and superdrive and 128 vram. When i was done ordering it mine had a ship date of on or before 4/27 and it shipped this saturday around 4pm and is slated to arive tomorrow (monday) before 3pm and right now is in the TN fedex location and has just left actually.

When i had my first order that i placed early 2 weeks ago apple changed my order for me a bit like added a 80gb hd but only a 1.33 with 64vram without me having to cancel my order so i was kinda surprised when i went to call monday to change my order to the new pb etc. The funny thing though was that when they made that change it increased the ship date of on or before 4-23.

How mobile is a PB 17"?

For those that have a PB 17" how mobile is it? Do you use it mainly as a desktop replacement and only occasionally take it with you on the road or is it easy to carry around and use it in say an airport setting while waiting for a flight? Or while attending a conference where I may be sitting on the floor of an auditorium (if it is full) or in a chair where the PB will rest on my lap.

I know that it's supposed to be a desktop replacement, but how well does it work as such. Is it more Desktop than portable or more portable than desktop.

Trying to decide between the 15" and 17".

I think you'll be better off with the 15". My friend has the 17" and it is very big in airports (well, big anywhere!). He travels alot and is regretting his decision. the 15" is a good balance with getting all the high end features without the super big footprint. Now that you can get the 17" and high end 15" equally equipped the only real advantage to the 17" is increased screen real estate - if you do video editing, etc. this may be worth it to you. Also consider that if you are doing most of your hard core work at a certain place you could get a 2nd monitor.

I reccomend 15" - can't wait to get mine next week!!!

I think you're right. I've been leaning toward the 15" PB, I had the TiPB 400Mhz and it worked quite well. I don't do video editing, but with the developer discount a 17" PB is really cheap and tempting. I just don't want to get stuck lugging that thing around and wishing I had a smaller one. The extra monitor seems like a good idea too when they release new ones.

Here is another question. Would you get a PB with or without a superdrive if you already had a desktop with one? Those that do have one, how often do you use it to burn dvd's (data or movies) compared to using it as a cd burner?

If you already have a DVD burner in your desktop, I would forego the superdrive in the PowerBook - unless you really see a pressing need to burn DVDs on the road. But if this isn't the case, I'm sure the combo drive will suit you just fine, and you can save $200 (or whatever it is) instead of getting the Superdrive. If you see a big need to burn DVDs on the road though, then by all means get the Superdrive....

on it's way...

I ordered Monday am (around 9:30 or so) the day they were released. Edu discount 15" 1.5 BTO, and according to FedEx, it's on it's way from the local facility. So if all goes well, it'll be in my grubby leetle hands around 10:30 am a week after I ordered (AKA Monday, April 16, AKA tomorrow).
WOOOP!

btw, not sure what bag I'm going to go with, but I did start a thread looking for a bag of the funky/cool/hip/nifty/gnarly (etc.) variety:
