It depends

This is exactly the dilemma that i have been facing, and i'm a little bit offput by the lack of discussion relating to ibook's on this thread. Everyone seems to be ordering powerbooks!

I'm really attracted to the price of the ibook and i would get a bigger hd so they would be the same. The power book is just so damned cute..(so i dont have the problem of psingh01). It's hard to justify the extra $500aud just for the looks of the 12"pb (i would be buying an extra 512mb 3rd prty ram:

iBook 12" 1GHz
256MB DDR266 SDRAM built-in
60GB Ultra ATA drive
Combo drive (DVD/CD-R)
AirPort Extreme Card
Keyboard/Mac OS X
Unit Price:** $1,843.60

PowerBook G4 12"
256MB DDR333 SDRAM
60GB Ultra ATA drive @ 4200rpm
Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
AirPort Extreme Card
Keyboard & Mac OS (default)
Unit price: $2338.60

Price difference = $495 AUD

.....i know the pb is sexy....but that sexy???

It really does depend on your needs, but the iBooks are exceptional value and cheap (as in low price).

495 is the absolute difference which might seem like you could stretch for it, but 495 is a LOT as a percentage of 1843.60.

I'm not a Mac expert so I don't know all the differences. The PB will be faster and has better dual monitor support and is slimmer and has s-video output as well (I think).

If you're a power user I guess the PB 12" is the way to go. If not, I think the iBooks are outstanding for their low price.

New PB is here, but...

Hi all,

I've been reading here for awhile, sharing the excitement of the new PB's. I ordered my 15" BTO last Monday, made the trip from Shangai on Friday, and arrived bright and early in NJ this morning at 8:30 am. Am I excited? YES! This is an upgrade from my graphite clamshell 466 SE that I've used for almost 4 years now - never noticed how dim the screen was until I had the new and old computers side by side.

Anyhow, this is my first post from the new PB 15. NO dead pixels, the screen is perfect! HOWEVER... it wobbles.

The front right corner does not lay flat. Thought it might be the table, so I moved it from to other flat surfaces with the same results. When I type, the computer has a slight bounce, which it kind of annoying. My husband says to get a mat to put underneath.

Am I wrong to expect complete perfection for this price (which for me is a heck of a lot)? The keyboard is wonderful though!

H

To hspruch:

It's not at all to much to ask for. When one pay that much for a computer you are entitled to a perfect machine. And in my opinion a computer that wobbles is far from perfect

I've heard about the problem before, but I don't know how people have solved the problem. Maybe they sent it back to Apple.... But something is for sure - something has to be done.

Let us know how you get the problem solved. And the best of luck

Fedex cracks me up

Well my Powerbook is here, and my 1GB RAM chip is still on the truck trapsing around the landscape. The RAM was 2-day by 4:30, but logic would dictate dropping both boxes off and making one trip to the address... ok, maybe that's my logic not theirs.

Everything looks good, other than the fact that Software Update just kicked off and updated about 10 things right out of the box. It would have been nice if this was done at the factor, but I'll get over it.

Oh well, off to work, I'll have to wait until later to play with this more. Haven't tried Airport config with my Linksys WRT54G yet. Running WEP, and found the tip for configuring that.... Hopefully that works as advertised.

bag?

I orderer the laptop screensavr from them today. It should stop any chance that my keyboard will ever mark my screen or allow acids from my fingers and palms to get stuck to the screen when its closed. And if I do get marks it should be excellent for quickly removing them. I went with the Black X

aswitcher: Did you order a bag for your 17 inch PB? If so, what kind?

Logic??? Why would they use a thing like that?

Any one thinking about picking it up from FedEX location can stop thinking: Apple's contract w/FedEX prevents that until AFTER the first attempt to delivery address on record. So mine is 4 mi. away and I have to wait until Wed. FedEx and Apple both said this can't be changed. So everyone must wait...let's see...from Shanghai to Seattle in two days, then 4 miles for another 2 days....

Speaking of not using logic...

My PB (BTO 15, 1stick 512MB RAM, 128MB video, 5400rpm 80GB drive: Ordered 6:39am PDT Monday the 19th)

has been sitting *IN PORTLAND* about 3 miles from my house since 6:22pm SATURDAY EVENING, and it looks like it won't be delivered until (at the earliest) TOMORROW!!

That's 2.5 days just sitting in their warehouse here. (Unless they wait until the 28th like it says, then it will be 3.5 days!)

Arrgh!

Send it back now, not later. There have been quality control problems in the builds of the ibook and powerbooks lately and there are numerous threads on MacRumors describing similar problems. As long as people accept second rate quality, Apple will have no reason to improve.

Ignore the people who respond saying that the "wobble" is a feature (yes, some believe a gap in the ibook plastic is a "feature") or those who claim some warping is to be expected. There are some Apple apologists who will accept anything and pronounce it "great". You paid too much money to accept such nonsense.

Ok...just got mine in! Quick battery question, though, before I get all into this. It came with about half a charge. Should I go ahead and let it completely run out of power, then completely charge it up before I leave work today. OR...should I charge it up all the way now, then let it run down, then charge it completely up AGAIN?

SlowX said:
Why?
And is it something that should be done the first time, or soon or...?

Because it is what apple recommends to condition the battery. As for doing it in the future, I don't know.

I plan on charging mine fully, and checking the capacity of the battery, then draining it.

Now, FedEX only has 28 minutes to get my my PB. Otherwise they are late... My luck... :(

I would let the battery run all the way down and then do a full charge.

Ahh, it's not really necessary with Lithium Ion batteries, but you do need to do a full discharge to full charge to calibrate your "battery meter":

from the Battery University :

Simple Guidelines

* Avoid frequent full discharges because this puts additional strain on the battery. Several partial discharges with frequent recharges are better for lithium-ion than one deep one. Recharging a partially charged lithium-ion does not cause harm because there is no memory. (In this respect, lithium-ion differs from nickel-based batteries.)
Short battery life in a laptop is mainly caused by heat rather than charge/discharge patterns.
* Although memory-free, apply a deliberate full discharge once every 30 charges to calibrate batteries with fuel gauge. Running down the battery in the equipment does this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. The battery life will not be affected.
* Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
* Consider removing the battery from a laptop when running on fixed power. (Some laptop manufacturers are concerned about dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing.)
* Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing date. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.

...hmm...

Did you get expedited shipping? I did (it shipped out Sat. AM), and the unit is also sitting in Portland, 4 miles away from me (Downtown)...

It was due Wed., looks like it'll be in tomorrow also. It's crazy, I watched it fly all over the Northern Hemisphere all weekend (TW-->AK-->SFo-->OAK-->TN-->PDX; quite fascinating, really, this BTO/fulfillment/On-demand manufacturing process.

It sure is hard being a Mac-appreciator.

Nope, just regular shipping. Mine came over from Shanghai to Indy on the same plane/batch as the rest of the folks here I think... Then it split off to head to PDX.

On truck for delivery!

Like many others, my BTO 12" was sitting at the local FedEx depot with a delivery date of the 29th (I chose free shipping). However, it is now listed as out for delivery! So don't dispair - even if you have a listed date on Wednesday you could get it sooner.

Woohoo!

shippment to spain not from shangai?

Hi... finally I received an email from apple saying that my powerbook 15'' BTO has shipped. They don't tell me from where. They give me a tracking number from TNT-Holland (not works yet, so I cannot know the origen)... which makes me think that maybe is not coming from shangai.
Would it make sense that they had 2 (or more) points of building?
Thanks!
a.

This is good

This is good news for us who live in Europe. Then it can't take that long before we get bigger shipments like in the US.

As for 2 or more production plants I don't know. But as far all i know Apple always get their laptops assembled in the far east because of the cheap and skillfull employees. It might be that they've got more than one factory... - dunno

WooHoo! is right! Mine just "hopped" on the FedEx truck for delivery...

I take back all the "not so nice" things I was thinking about FedEx. :)

Great, my roommate stepped out of the house JUST when fedex comes. Now I have to wait till after 5 to pick it up. Just my luck!
